7-WOOD or HYBRID? // How Loft and Center of Gravity Changes Ball Flight

We are in the TXG Fitting Studio with Mac Boucher to compare his TaylorMade Stealth 7 wood to the Stealth Plus Hybrid, and help explain how each club offers distinct playability.

Both clubs have the same 21° of loft but play at different lengths, and have very different Center of Gravity positions. Mac takes us through some of his favourite shots with each club while Ian breaks down the benefits of each model and how they compare for distance, dispersion, spin, and height.

  1. Switched to a 7 wood 2 years ago and it has replaced both my hybrids. So much better for attacking greens.

  2. Love my 7 wood, carry 4 wood 7 wood. Can hit from 180 to 220 with 7wood, and perfect for little chips around greens too

  3. I 1000% would rather play a wood than a hybrid-o. We just built a similar setup going TSI 4 and 7 wood to account for more options off tee and long par 5s. I think the 5 and 7 Woods got the high handicapper stereotype but that just isn't the case. Love this video and validates my fitting choices 🙌 Thanks lads!!

  4. Great content Ian and Mac love my 7 wood had it in my bag about 8 years its so versatile and easy to hit 👌

  5. Put an old ping g25 7 wood I found for 60 bucks! May be my favorite club at the moment. I think more players should game them

  6. How would the 7 wood compare to a 5 wood that has had the loft adjusted to a higher setting?

  7. Hey Ian not sure if you guys realized but you had the wind set up right to left for the tee shot and hybrid and then the 7wood you had it left to right. The draw he played would have probably held against the wind better than over drawing like it did

  8. Love the content! Can you do a debunking “loft jacking” video for irons? Compare same or similar lofted irons but with different designs. Like a P790 8 iron to a p7mb 7 iron. I think too many people think they could just turn down their lofts and get the same results.

  9. Whats the best spin window for a 7 wood. I have a mavrik 7 wood and my ball speed is around 140mph on a trackman but on course sometimes it looks like it is climbing

  10. I'm only working with 6 through gap wedge in my iron set because I'm just not comfortable looking down at an iron with less loft than that ZX4 6 iron, looks more like a 4 iron in my old set which makes sense to me. Got to go get fitted for the long clubs so I can try to figure out what will work for me.

  11. Bought a 7 wood stealth and it’s probably the best decision I’ve ever made I love it. Returned my 3hybrid for it and there really is a lot of versatility for it. Great video guys keep up the good work

  12. such a great explanation of how the width of the clubhead relates to CG and dynamic loft… I'd always wondered the difference between 7w and hybrid and this is the first legit explanation I've come across. Thanks for all the great content as always.

  13. as a follow up question, if they go approx same distance but one goes higher and lands soft, why would anyone ever play a hybrid over a 7w except in windy/links-type conditions?

  14. A love my Cobra F9 7-Wood. Its my 200 Yards club. And its easy to grip down of a only need 185 yard. Its stop so fast on greens👍

  15. Being a decent driver of the ball and a 5 wood being probably my favourite clubs and my next club being a hybrid that's my least favourite in the bag I often think is a 7 or even a 9 wood a good idea for me

  16. I just got a hybrid in my bag. Radspeed. I’m having that problem right now. I’m landing it very well, but I’m starting to see a problem…I can’t hit cuts with it. And out of nowhere it goes from 245-265 too a 275 rocket. Think I might go swap this for the 7 now

  17. Great video guys again and something I really need to consider again. I had a Callaway V series 7 wood for a few years and not sure where it’s even at now. Loved the visuals on it showing the difference in flights and your man is awesome at calling and playing the shots, just superb 👏🤙

  18. I gotta ask but like, for what purpose would you need to hit a 7wood 247yards…. thats such an absurd distance I can't even comprehend what you'd do with higher low lofted clubs

  19. Have absolutely loved my new TSI2 5 wood @ 7 wood length … best of both worlds in a ventus red. High launching point & shoot machine! Obvious credit to Mr. Fraser on the fit.

  20. I've had a TSi2 7 wood in the bag for close on 12 months now for the same reasons discussed in your video. It also happens to be the perfect club to hit into the middle of the corner on some dogleg par 4's at my home course. So easy!

  21. Wondering if the stealth plus 7 wood would provide different results, or vice versa stealth hybrid ? Not sure why you guys tested plus vs stealth (regular)

  22. I have a 2H set at 20* and a Heavenwood at 20*. I find the wood is great off the tee on Par 3s from 150-190, but I tend to dig it out of the fairway or rough. When I hit it clean it just takes off. The 2H is my fairway club on long holes. Every now and then I'll hit one that flies, but usually the miss is a low runner, whereas the HW miss will always toe it off to the right.

  23. I carry a 7 wood, 5 wood, and I plan to put an old Callaway Warbird 3 wood back in play.

  24. Ian, I have Titleist 917 f2 in 3 (15°), 5 (18°);AND a 7 (21°) added a few months later. Each has a Mitsubishi Diamana Blue S 80 gram Shaft, at Standard Length.
My Question concerns the replaceable Weights and the Effect of going Lighter or Heavier to the Ball Flight in terms of Trajectory and/or Spin?

  25. I love everything FWs offer over hybrids…except I just can't strike them well off the deck. Doesn't matter what I try it's either thin or heavy – never in the middle.

Hybrids are just easy to pure for me, so I bag those.

  26. I switched out my Ping G425 4 hybrid (my miss was a hook) to my old TM 7 wood and love the confidence it gives me, distance is about 185-190 and very workable, it's a great club and very versatile

  27. Ian,

When I say I couldn’t hit a fairway wood 190-210 yards to save my life, I couldn’t. Callaway, ping, tour edge, I tried so many.

Until I found the Tsi2 7 wood with the KuroKage shaft. This club has become my 2nd shot off par 5’s. Recovery shot on a par 4 after a short drive, recovery club that I can hit over trees after slicing a drive into the other fairway to still have a shot at a GIR or move up down position to save par. And first wood I can shape left/right, high, low. This 7 wood has been a game changer. My current set up on the sleeve is D1 and what’s even crazier is I play stiff in all my shafts but this club. I bought it with the R2 flex after being miss informed at a golf Galaxy believing this flex was in between regular and stiff flex, but luckily it’s perfect. I just aim, give it a smooth pappy shot, and let the club work it’s magic.

  28. I hit my 7wd longer than my 3Hyb, both are Sim2 Max. Where I use them for is, if it is really windy, I prefer the lower flight of my 3Hyb, if wind isn't blowing, I prefer the higher launch of the 7wd. I have a new 4 hybrid, Cobra LTDx that I can hit far enough to cover the distance if I leave the 3H out.

  29. Loved the explanation of two clubs with the same loft; static vs dynamic loft. Makes it easy to understand!

  30. I'm newer to the game. So forgive my ignorance. But isn't a 3 Hybrid more close to a 5 Wood than a 7 Wood?

  31. I have the Rogue ST Max 7 wood and UW 19*. Both are great to hit from anywhere and gap nicely between 4i and driver.

  32. Always loved a solid 5 wood. Why I've never tried a 7 wood is beyond me…
That's changing in the near future
