McIlroy, Reed embedded golf ball rulings at Farmers Insurance Open

In the third round of the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines (South), Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy are each given relief as a result of an embedded ball per USGA rule 16.4. Reed’s situation came on the par-4 10th hole and McIlroy’s on the par-5 18th. PGA TOUR Rules Official Ken Tackett explains what happened during each ruling in a conversation with CBS’ Jim Nantz.

The Farmers Insurance Open features a star-studded field – including two-time FedExCup winner Rory McIlroy and past champion Jon Rahm – from the scenic Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California, near San Diego. Reigning champion Marc Leishman looks to become the event’s fourth back-to-back winner, while Jason Day and Jordan Spieth make their calendar-year debuts. There’s a robust group of local products teeing it up at Torrey Pines, led by multi-time TOUR winner Xander Schauffele (who went to San Diego State), and of course, Phil Mickelson – who is coming to Torrey Pines after hosting The American Express.
