Canadian Classics: Episode 8, "Royal Montreal (Blue)" – Host of the 2024 Presidents Cup

If Golf Canada had a formal open rota equivalent to the R&A, Royal Montreal would be a permanent fixture. We’re not saying it has the jaw dropping beauty of a Royal Portrush, or an Old course… it’s more like a Birkdale, or a Carnoustie. Just such a solid test of one’s game, particularly their ball striking and lag putting.

Founded in 1873, it is the oldest golf club in North America. This place oozes history, its clubhouse is worth the price of admission on its own. The club has a long running history of interclub matches with The Country Club (Brookline), Royal Ottawa and Toronto Golf. Hickories, red blazers, featheries, partnerships with global golf courses are on full display. It’s as if you were visiting the late Archie Baird’s golf museum in Gullane, East Lothian. Simply put, it’s a golf museum.

The Blue course, built in 1959 by Dick Wilson and updated by Rees Jones, boasts enormous greens. It’s already a beast as a par 70/7100+ yards with plenty of room for lengthened tees (especially if you play it in 7 degrees C (or 44 F) like we did). The course predominantly leans towards the penal and heroic end of the architecture spectrum, and will make for world class drama during the 2024 Presidents Cup. Stay tuned for holes 2, 4, 6, 7, 10 & 12-18 for providing a thrilling tournament
