Tennis introduces the Laver Cup!

Looks like Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe will be renewing their on court rivalry after all! Only this time they’ll both be wearing captain hats 😉 Tennis, giving a little nod to the golf world, has created its own version of the Ryder Cup, called the Laver Cup, named after Australian tennis legend Rod Laver.

Over 3 days Europe’s best male players captained by Borg will go head to head with the rest of the world team lead by McEnroe. McEnroe and Borg clashed on the court regularly during their playing careers, but starting in September of this year it’s their coaching skills from the sidelines that will be run through the gauntlet. Both captains will have 2 picks for their 6 man squads, with the remaining 4 spots on each team being allocated by ranking points scored on the ATP tour. Prague will hold the first edition of this tournament, and then it will become an annual event except for Olympic years.

The format will be as follows:

There will be 4 matches per day, 3 singles matches and 1 doubles match. Each player is required to play at least 1 singles match.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both have signed on and committed to participate in this inaugural event. For players such as this who have been rivals their entire career, this event presents a welcomed twist of fate. For the first time ever we will get to see such pairings as these 2 compete WITH each other!

Very excited about this blossoming tennis milestone!
