The Importance Of Center Of Gravity In Putters

The location of center of gravity in a putter is important for two reasons.

First, it can directly affect the face angle, and cause the putter to twist open if the center of gravity is located away from the face. Torque created by such putters can complicate a putting stroke, and make it more difficult to consistently return the face squarely at impact.

Secondly, if the center of gravity is located rearward from the face, it can cause a player to increase grip pressure to prevent the face from opening when it is put in motion. Increased grip pressure can interfere with a player’s hand sensitivity and their feel for distance.

Putters that do not create torque when put in motion allow a player to have the lightest grip pressure possible for the best feel for distance. Such putters also can make a stroke less complicated, and easier for a player to maintain a square face angle from address to impact.
