Pre-Owens, Kevin Steen was undoubtedly the most popular independent wrestler in the world, breaking through as indie wrestling took off in popularity at the onset of social media. “Kill Steen Kill” shirts dominated the crowds at almost every wrestling show, with even The Rock catching wind of him before he found his way to NXT. From ROH to PWG to AIW, Steen made an impact and became world champion of basically every independent promotion that was deemed important at one point or another. In classics with names you might recognize like Shinsuke Nakamura and the Motor City Machine Guns, everybody knew Steen was destined for greatness whenever he decided to leave independent wrestling, and by all accounts, it couldn’t have happened to a better guy.
