Where you are coming from at the top of your backswing dictates (at some level) what you are going to do in your downswing. So, depth in the backswing is important for a variety of reasons. The more depth you have with your hands, the easier it is to shallow the golf club. Depth is good for distance. Depth will also increase your ability to rotate.
In this video I go over all of the checkpoints you need to get proper depth in your backswing and I demonstrate some feedback drills you can use in your practice.
