The Greatest Round Of Golf Ever Played – Al Geiberger's 59 (Part 2)

The Greatest Round of Golf Ever Played!

Al Geiberger shot the first below 60 round of golf back in 1977. The round is known as the greatest round of all time. Here are some facts you need to know about the spectacular round shot by Mr. 59.

The round was played in 1977 – long before the highly evolved modern equipment (metal woods with weight adjustments, stiff shafts, hybrids, and solid core golf balls) was available.

Colonial was (and still is) a long course. In 1977, at 7,249 yards, it was one of the longest on the PGA Tour.

The conditions on Friday when Al shot the round were miserable – 103 degrees and high humidity. Try playing even 9 holes under those conditions and see how fatigued you are! Imagine the stress is placed on the body to play 18 holes combined with the mental pressure of this being a professional tour event.

Modern agricultural and landscaping technology keeps today’s courses in near perfect conditions, especially with respect to fairways and greens. Putting surfaces were, according to Al, far more difficult to read due to the type of grasses available back then.

None of the equipment used in practice rounds to familiarize golfers and caddies with the course – range finders, green readers, etc. – was in existence.

The sophisticated combination of physical training and swing analysis to create “better golfers” did not exist. Today’s golfers can use technology to dial-in their performance.
