If you tend to hit the driver low on the clubface it is definitely hurting your distance. When you make low contact. For long drives. we want to have a high launch and low spin.
The loft on your driver face is lower on the bottom of the face. So when you make contact low on the face, the launch will be lower (less distance). This also increases spin, due to something called the gear effect.
With high contact on the face we get a higher launch angle (good) and lower spin (also good). This means a simple change in tee height could get you out driving your friends.
