Funds raised by the 2018 Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day, held on the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course on Val de Vie Estate, allowed for Grade 3 learners from 19 schools in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley to receive reflective backpacks.
The Val de Vie Foundation partnered with Visibility is Life, an organisation dedicated to improving the safety of all pedestrians by educating the youth on road safety and providing reflective gear. With a portion of the funds raised from the 2018 Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day, a selection of Grade 3 learners attending non-fee-paying schools in the Valley will be provided with a school bag with reflective strips on the front and back.
Carla Portwig, Founder and CEO of Visibility is Life, addressed the Grade 3 learners of Mbekweni Primary and reminded them that the backpack they were receiving was a tool to make them more visible and safer on the road while walking to school and crossing roads, but that they needed to apply what they learnt from road safety training. “Educating young children and seeing their faces light up when they receive their reflective backpacks is a dream come true for me. In essence, what Visibility is Life does, is a matter of life and death. We teach children that they are valuable and worthy of owning something that potentially can save their life.”
