How to Shoot in the 80's – Dial In Your Pitches (SC300)

Hey Quite The Chap here for GolfersRX. Welcome to the How to Shoot in the 80’s series in the 60 Second Series, where today we’re going to learn to dial in our wedges.

We’re now hitting consistently crisp wedges that, for the most part, fly a relatively consistent distance. Now we need to be able to hit them the correct distance…on command.

Here’s a great method to figuring our your distances:

– You’ve got a 3-4 clubs, LW, SW, PW, 9 iron. Maybe you have a gap wedge but it doesn’t matter, the idea is the same no matter the club count.
– Start with your LW and make a 10 swings and record how far you the ball on average. Do this for all your wedges.
– SIDE NOTE: an inexpensive launch monitor will really help in an exercise like this.
– Now perform the exact same swing sequence with the same clubs BUT grip down an inch on your grip. Record the result.
– If you want to be really thorough, do the above exercise twice more with a 3/4 swing and again with a 1/2 swing. Recording the average distance each time.

What you’re going to be left with is a list of numbers. When faced with an 85 yard shot you may think, well, I hit my SW 93 yards but you may also notice that you hit your pitching wedge 85 yards with a 1/2 swing. Boom, there’s your club selection.

This exercise is extremely simple but it is also time consuming. But worth it if your goal is to consistently shoot in the 80’s.

Until next time keep it simple.
