RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that senior Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque, of the men’s golf team, is the Killers Golf UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.

Duque won the individual championship at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic hosted by George Washington University last weekend. The tournament followed a unique format where teams played 27 holes on each day of the event.

On Friday, Duque opened with a first round six-under par 66 using an eagle, five birdies, 11 pars, and a bogey. Duque followed that with a five-under 31 in the back nine of his second round with an eagle, three birdies, and five pars as he sits with a 27-hole score of 97.

On Saturday, Duque finished Friday’s second round with a six-under 66 before posting a final round one-under par to finish with a three-round score of 203 for a one-shot victory.

Duque’s 203 breaks Armen Kirakossian’s (2009) and Manuel Inman’s (1999) program record of 204. His first and second round six-under 66 are tied for sixth lowest individual round in program history.

Duque led the Vaqueros to a fifth-place finish in the 12-team field.
