How much can a human deadlift?

Could a 500-pound human lift 1355 pounds? How might evolution and training advances push human limits? In this video, I dive deep into one of the most debated questions in strength sports: how high can the deadlift record go? I explore historical trends, weight class records, and future possibilities using data from powerlifting and strongman competitions to determine how high, the deadlift record could go.

  1. Interesting analysis, Mr Hooper, it reminds me of a seminar I attended ages ago about a similar analysis for the progression of the world records for short track racing events (foot and ice skate). Granted, there were some fundamental differences since time records have a natural floor whereas weight records don't really have a natural ceiling.

I'm also reminded of a video from Eddie Hall from a few years back where he had his theoretical max deadlift power tested, though I can't recall what the final figure was.

  2. So much wrong with this video. From the using linear regression to wrong weight of danny grigsby to wrong cm to feet conversions.
Mitch should really re-do the math before publishing videos like this.

  3. I don't think this can work as the 500kg that eddie hall and the 501kg that hafthor broke is still standing. not saying you or few other elite athletes don't have a chance, you do but once it hits 505kg there will probably be a plateau for another 5 to 10 yeats unless there's some teenager out there coming for the title. And that will still take at-least another 10 years for him to peak.

  4. It is also possible that in the near future one guy will deadlift so much that the record will stand for 50+ yrs…you never really know. The long jump record is 33 years old and the second longest jump in history is Bob Beamons from the 68 (!) Olympics almost 60 years ago…progression is hard to predict…a lot of track records has stood for 20 – 40 years and some day the same will happen in powerlifting and strongman…the beauty of it though is that we never know when it will happen until after the fact…lately there has been a lot of talk about the 505 deadlift and every year no one is close…I do believe you and Hafthor WILL someday lift at least 505.Hafrthor could probably have lifted 510 the day he did 501 by the looks of it…

  5. 8000 years ago when the climate was warmer than today, people in europe were taller than today. So I dont know what that prooves? They deadlifted heavier. back then?

  6. Genetic enhancement, nano technologies and probably some bio-mechanical implants are going to change everything in the next 100 years.

  7. Think you’re missing how much more established these strength sports are becoming over time. I think we’re closer to theoretical limits than your calculations suggest. That being said there’s still some progress to be made

  8. It is definatlly possible in next 200 years cuz we already have 7ft+ people but not someone who is in strength sports and has alot of muscle and strength i think we can get someone like that in 200 years

  9. My prediction before 2050 we will have a 1 ton deadlift and i am not kidding. Their will be a groundbreaking medical break through and it will change everything

  10. That Napoleon was so short, is a myth. He was well inside the norm for his time. And deadlift will eventually hit a weight that it is impossible to go above. That humans get bigger and bigger, will stagnate and eventually stop. And people are generally getting higher, but more slender. Well except for obesity. Militarys all over the world find themselves having to lower the physical demands for their soldiers, because the general population is much weaker than they used to be. And then there is physics, which also plays a part in the absolute max lifting capacity for humans. And the physics will never change. my personal belief is that barring genetic manipulations, No human will ever lift 600kg.

  11. Something that I never hear anyone talk about is the performance differences based upon elevation changes where there is a fluctuation in gravity and and air density. I.E. training all your life at sea level and pulling a max lift at say 10,000 feet.

  12. People 200 years in the past had basically the same genetics as we do. The reason why average body size goes up lies in nutrition. That will hit a ceiling at some point when poverty and hunger are no longer a thing. Therefore height can't be extrapolated into the future like you did. Additionally strongmen are the least average guys and those genetics on the extreme end are basically impossible to predict.

  13. It should be pound for pound . the reason being is that muscle and fibre quite simply has an exhaustion point. Romanian deadlifts … DONT COUNT … and if you slip in th phrase … climate change … again … YOURE GOING TO BE SACKED !!!

  14. I was practicing deadlifting (no grips) for only 4 months when I hit 3x my bodyweight (I was only 115 lbs.). I thought deadlifting 3x your bodyweight, especially after less than 6 months, is objective brute strength. That's good enough for me – I was a natural bodybuilder who didn't follow stereotypical strength training or powerlifting parameters.

  15. Deadlift also gets significantly less out a suit than squat or bench press and it’s just as taxing so they probably don’t train it to the same level as squat

  16. If someone with Thor's height and john Haack's leverages were alive I think they would be a 530-550kg puller. Hard not to think John isnt the best conventional puller pound for pound ever, wouldnt be surprised to see a 1000lb deadlift from him now that he is fully committing to the 100kg weight class and not cutting to 90kg anymore.

  17. I don't think human height progression will increase in a linear fashion. We're taller now due to nutrition and the comfort of a modern lifestyle. it's not likely we can drastically improve on nutrition. For most of human history people were struggling to get enough food and there were droughts, pestilence ice age etc and life wwas tough. The stress and constant hardship would lead to less recovery from stressors and less growth. So nowadays we're largely free of that to an extent. So any height increase will be slow.

  18. People can lift way more than 1300 pounds if they R grown 'engineered' rather than waiting around 4 'mutants'. 4 example, cloning Hafthor & raising them on hormones 2 B 600 pounds 8 feet tall & so on, same as farmers R free 2 mutate cows & other animals. The only thing holding '$ports' back R silly '(((Law$)))' trying 2 keep whites weak & stupid, or gay like U, Mr. (((Bud Light))) =P

  19. BTW: Mr. Bud Light, U should do a video about that power lifter guy who put on a bit of lipstick & called himself a girl 2 try & beat the others but got his azz kicked = funny stuff =) i4get his #FakeName =)) Surely U remember him from the recent events =D

  20. About 20 years ago a friend of mine pulled 632 weighing 123. 5'7" in height. His squat was also around 600. Some people are just built different.

  21. "The Hooper Evolutionary Strength Progression Hypothesis"
Yea, the numbers add up like you say. it's a hard sell based on the current records. But 300 years ago a 300 pound dead lift would have been impossible if they could figure out what it was. So yea the "Hooper hypothesis" is true.

I think somebody has some fancy pants Canadian learning.
