My TaylorMade Sim Driver exploded on contact with ball: Carbon fiber crown nearly decapitates starting official.

I’ve used this driver less than 10 times. I about had a heart attack when this thing blew up on me. My brain couldn’t comprehend what was happening. My friends were laughing their asses off as the starter walks the crown of the club back over to me, which apparently sailed over his head like a ninja throwing star. I thought, “This can’t be normal, can it? What are the odds?” Apparently, pretty good. There are stories all over the web about this happening with this club. I haven’t reached out to customer service since the club is out of warranty. It seems like TaylorMade needs to do a recall on this one. Anyone have a similar situation or have any advice?

Try to contact TaylorMade with the pictures maybe they will do something for you

I am curious about swing speed on all these broken drivers. Are these with people with very high swing speeds or are there people breaking their drivers who swing around 90 mph?

  3. Look how absolutely crappy that glue bead looks. Horrible quality.

  4. GolfIsGood66

I wonder if you get the right epoxy and prep it right if it can be glued back on?

Nothing to do with the ball marks and crack out on the toe. Nope. Not at all.

My buddy has gotten two different Taylormades over the course of about 7 years. two different ones have cracked on him. One time, they even upgraded him to a new model.

Today I learned there are stickers inside the club heads.

Do you have any pictures of the top of the driver?

I had something similar happen to me earlier this year with a Callaway Mavrik I bought around Christmas time. It shattered within a couple months. I reached out to Callaway and the replaced it for me. But since they didn’t have any Mavriks left in stock, I ended up getting upgraded to an AI Smoke.

  11. I love how half of the comments here are trying to gaslight OP into thinking this is his fault. Drivers from 10-15 years ago didn’t fail so spectacularly at the rate they do today. Manufacturers know that the average golfer is going to sky the ball, and should design their drivers with this in mind.

  12. why did i think there would be something inside? like some kind of damper mechanism or something at least. are all drivers hallow?

  13. Don’t worry they have great customer service and will mail out a new replacement starter.

Have you tried hitting the ball with the face of the driver?

Same thing happened to me during a lesson. Luckily it was under warranty so I got upgraded to a stealth. Sold it after a year and got a Paradym, don’t think I’ll go back to tm drivers

  16. Had the same thing happen to me, same driver which I loved. Asked TM Canada and they told me that they wouldn’t be able to do anything as I didn’t have the original receipt and it was more than 2 years old. However, they did give me a credit for $300 that I put towards new clubs. Pretty happy when the outcome even though I lost my favourite driver.

As a club repair guy the sky shot on the top of the crown don’t look great but chances are if you leave your clubs in the elements, in the trunk or in the garage, they will not hold up. Heads will come unglued, irons will fly off after a swing and putters will twist. This is especially true in the South with humidity.

Funny i did the same to a hybrid not too long ago. I thought it was like a hot day and the glue may have been compromised. Idk get your shit together TM

The club face has less ball marks than the toe.

It’s a 2 year warranty. So if you don’t have a receipt the model has to be within 2 seasons.

You can sometimes buy an older model and you need the receipt if it was bought new.

It’s not great considering how easily tm blowup

I used to be a golf pro tech working in club repair, so I’ll give you my 2 cents.

Couple things going on here that I think are happening.

    1. You’re terrible at making contact with the ball.
    2. You’re not storing your clubs in a climate controlled environment.

The carbon fiber piece that ripped off is glued onto the clubhead. With it being glued and exposed to temperature fluctuations, the expansion and contraction of the forged aluminum club head has allowed the glue that holds the carbon fiber piece to the clubhead weaken.

The second problem is hitting the ball right over the toe, on top of the club head at 90+ miles an hour. From the scuff marks, I think this has happened a few times…

Basically, when you’re making contact with the ball and repetitively “skying it,” you’re damaging the carbon fiber piece, and eventually, it’s going to rip off like the pull tab on a can of soup

I also think you have hit this club a few more times than 10… reach out to TM and see what they can do for you if it’s under warranty. If so, they should be able to repair or replace your club. Also, if they ask questions, be honest. They’re not trying to deny your claim but instead using it for research. If they can’t help you, take it to a local pro shop. They should be able to help you decide if this club is salvageable or not.

At the very least, get a lesson on how to drive a golf ball. It might be an easy fix, such as tee adjustment or setup. Otherwise, this problem will continue to happen.

Congratulations on your new Qi10! Send it back to TM.

In nearly 2 years, why is it that 99.99% of drivers being blown up TaylorMade?

  24. Was really hoping the third pic was gonna be the Starter looking like Nearly Headless Nick.

  25. Mikeinthemornin

Pretty sure all taylormade products have a 2 year warranty, just need to go to support page send a few pictures and should be able to get a replacement.

  26. illQualmOnYourFace

“You said something about 90 degrees?”

  27. “There are stories all over the web about this happening. I should post it on reddit.”

  28. Brownlightning-88

starting official almost got decapitated so I got new irons

  29. General_Scipio

I had this happen to me when I was hitting a rental club at the course I worked at. Was very lucky to have the pro and manager on the range at the time who both saw I got a good connection and it wasn’t my fault

  30. Ok so have you tried using it without the top? Is it even faster?

  31. Better_Indication830

I had a stealth 2 plus that did the same and I’ve seen several others that have had the same. One guy I recall had his replaced like 3 times and did it to every single one. I switched to callaway paradym driver and won’t ever look back still love my TM irons tho

  32. Academic_Candy4611

Welcome to the Sim Driver Club, I had my Sim 2 Max do a similar thing I’m starting to think carbon fiber and glue does not work well with drivers I contacted Taylormade Japan and they could not do anything but apologise because I was in another country when this occurred and not in the purchased country but if you are in the same location then they might do something

  33. JsquashJ

My advice would be to use the club ten times before the warranty is out.
The glue job doesn’t look great.

This happened to a Cobra club of mine, never found the metal top. It was probably five years old and saw 200 rounds
