Made my own ball marker to improve putting

Starting to play more golf this year and was getting frustrated on missing 4 to 10 foot putts that were relatively straight. Seemed like every round I could take off around 5 putts easily due to playing too much break or not knowing where I was lined up. I ended up designing my own ball marker and it actually works so thought I'd share.

Consists of one centerline and two angled lines both at 3 degrees each way. Simple process: align dark center line at hole, most greens are 2 degrees or less of slope that feel relatively flat, aim ball within the 3 degree angled lines, remove marker and make putt!

Aiming the dark centerline at the hole is a consistent way to measure each putt. If you miss a putt playing too much break, next hole with a similar breaking putt you know how much to play. Also great ball marker to have a long straight line to aim where you want to line up the ball for more slope breaking putts.

This summer it's really reduced my total putts each round. After using it consistently on the practice green and for a few rounds, I've found that even putting without it now I'm much better at knowing where I'm aimed and reading break. My 3 putts are now only caused if I'm across the green with a long lag putt due to a poor iron in. 10 ft and under my make percentage is feeling really good. I still use it depending on the putt but it has been a great tool that really helped me this summer golf season.

Just thought I'd share that having a great straight line mark has really helped my putting out tremendously!

Can you make one that helps me stop putting it 15ft past the hole?

might be good for initial aiming, but it’s a bad eye line for a putting stroke

the club path is on an arc and not a straight line—it’s actually what causes a lot of bad putter contact and thus bad lag control

Isn’t this the same exact post from months ago?

For the longest time, I was a big supporter of using lines on balls for putting…. Even had a triple track putter.

What I found out was that although it helps for short putts, it was causing poor distance control for lag putting because I was so focused on hitting the perfect line. Even if you know this, it’s hard to focus on the speed when you see all the lines.

What I do now is to just use the text on the ball to give me a rough gauge of the start line. Keeping it simple does wonders for putting (and golf as well)

Line up ball and marker center line to hole using shaft edge with an eye closed, then once there I can adjust the ball via the marker lines. Can use the silver in between to in between if it’s not quite on the degree for really long putts.
