Tom Kim: U.S. players ‘cursing at us’ during Presidents Cup foursomes

Tom Kim Alleges U.S. Players Used Profanity During Presidents Cup Foursomes

In a gripping display of competitive spirit at the Presidents Cup, tensions flared on Saturday as Tom Kim expressed concerns over the behavior of certain U.S. players. Following a closely contested match where Kim and his partner Si Woo Kim suffered a narrow 1-down defeat to Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, Tom Kim reported that he heard some U.S. players cursing at them.

“As the match progressed, things got a bit heated,” Kim noted. “I could hear some players directing expletives our way, which I don’t think reflects good sportsmanship. However, I recognize that this intensity is part of the game and its excitement.”

Throughout the day, the Kims were a dynamic presence, showcasing impressive skills and spirited celebrations. A highlight of their performance came at the par-4 16th hole when Si Woo Kim executed a remarkable flop shot to make birdie, tying the match. His exuberant celebration included a rendition of Steph Curry’s “night-night” gesture, much to the crowd’s delight.

Despite the playful nature of the match, the atmosphere turned competitive, culminating in a birdie from Cantlay at the final hole to secure the win. However, post-match interactions appeared cordial, with both teams exchanging handshakes, seemingly devoid of any visible tension.

Tom Kim continued, “You saw the excitement from me with my fist pumps and jumping around the green. It’s all part of the competition, but I don’t think there’s any need for cursing at one another. My feelings aren’t hurt; I just hope there are no negative repercussions from my comments.”

When pressed for details about the players involved in the alleged cursing, Kim refrained from naming names. Schauffele, during his press conference, responded to the allegations, asserting that he and Cantlay treated their opponents with respect and were focused on maintaining a positive atmosphere. “We were trying to quiet the crowd while they were hitting. It was a fair back-and-forth,” he said. Schauffele added that he was unaware of any inappropriate comments being made.

Later, Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis caught up with Tom Kim, who reiterated that he heard some “PG-rated, inflammatory” remarks from the U.S. team, although he did not specify who was responsible. Lewis noted that the remarks did not come from Schauffele, Cantlay, or their respective caddies. Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard suggested that the incident may have taken place on the 11th hole, where some U.S. supporters were reportedly vocal towards Kim.

As the Presidents Cup continues, the focus will remain on both the competition and the sportsmanship displayed on the course.

  1. Poor baby – golfers don't normally jump and fist pump after making a great shot. I, for one, won't ever respect Kim and his partner.

  2. In the match on Saturday afternoon. Kim hit shot out of bunker it was on hole 15 or 16 on NBC I heard him say damn it f*** then when ball his green and goes into long grass he said F*** clean as day live tv played back for my wife to heard . Don't talk KIM.

  3. I've seen quite a bit lately of the press response to events like this that portray the event in a completely wrong light. The press uses eye-catching headlines that belie the real story in order to create a shocking story where there is no story. Some would call it "fake news". Frankly, I'm sick of the out-and-out lies the press tells and how they increasingly foment reaction in actors in order to create a story where there is no story. All for the sake of a buck. Please stop.
