The HARDEST tee shot in golf? | Road Hole | Open Championship

The Old Course at St. Andrews is one of the most famous venues in golf and revered by all the players and the 17th hole, the Road Hole, is also one of the toughest holes on any course.

The tee shot has to be hit over the railway sheds in the grounds of the Old Course hotel and has taken many victims in its rich history.

We recently showed some of the best drives on the par 4, but here we take a look at some of those who have fallen victim to the Road Hole off the tee including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson and Colin Montgomerie.

  1. What makes this hole hard is the players getting in there own heads and shaking the tee shot making it impossible to recover

  2. These are the best players in the world. It's a wonder those hotel windows are all intact.
It is kinda interesting how you could theoretically hit to the OTHER fairway, but you get punished for being a coward by having a really crappy angle, dealing directly with The Bunker in your line.

  3. Kudos to the cameraman who managed to keep track of Mickelson's ball as it pinballed around the hotel's façade!

  4. Monty's face at 5:05…. Wow. He could often be very softly spoken and considered in interviews but he was infamous for his irritability with fans and ferocious temper should things go wrong.

  5. Really, a tee shot over buildings. Hotels were built so close to a golf course, who's bright idea was that. I've been to the Old Course and it's just old and historic, not the nicest golf course.

  6. Why not put a shopping mall on the left side of the fairway to balance things out. Ridiculous hole.

  7. I wonder if that was painful to Duval at that time. He looked like his back was stiff as he picked up his tee. David is my favorite golfer of all time. Tiger is up there too!

  8. One of those holes where you should play your second shot first – an iron down to the corner so you can see the hole, then let it rip with a fairway wood! Take your rifle if you're in that rough – that's leopard country, not TIGER country – cause he didn't like it in there!
