WE spent a week looking at slow play at Torrey pines and why it happens. In all case it was high handicappers playing the wrong tee’s. We moved all tees up to the white marker for 3 days and rounds were 20-30 minutes faster in every case.

If a person uses more strokes and more time to play those strokes from the back tees it takes more time to play. It ruins their round and everyone’s.

I’d love to see what pace of play would look like without 2-person carts. Just walking and individual golf boards or other single person carts/conveyances. So many golfers are so bad with 2 players in one cart. They just ride together to each ball and never are more than 5y away from each other.

I’m curious to hear what’s considered a slow round? Over 4 hours?

I get so pissed when I play behind a foursome and they all walk to each others ball and wait till they hit then walk as a group to the next person. Total time waster

Go to your ball – wait till it’s your turn to hit – in the meantime do all your routine stuff. When it’s your turn hit, put your club in the bag and discreetly start walking to your next shot.

Bingo. I stress this to my friends so much like bro, I don’t care if you wanna take 6 practice swings but you could be doing that while someone else is playing their shot.

That’s why I try to be the first t time

after hitting get in the cart with the club; put the club away next time the cart stops. Applies to the passenger on all shots and driver most of the time

Just play ready golf. Unless you’re in an actual competitive tournament for money just play ready golf.

Play ready golf, don’t wait on the green because you’re the farthest out from the hole, go up and start putting. I see a lot of people waiting 5 mins for someone to walk over the green to chip w 3 balls on the green. We just go up snd start putting, when the person walking to their ball is ready they hit. At the tee if ur ready go up and hit don’t wait for the guy who got the best score on the last hole. A lot of courses now have cart GPS with pace of play built in and the rangers do a good job to go out and ease up congestion.

Tell that to this sub the next time anyone dares to use iron covers.

Also… locate your ball or get an estimate while still at the T blocks. I will laser a tree to estimate where I went out and pick a landmark. Search for a minute or two and drop if I can’t find it. I also always help playing partners look when I know I’m sitting pretty in the fairway.

  12. why all the hurry, isnt golf meant to be fun???

This is why carts often slow down play. If the two people have to drive between their balls, it’s impossible for the second to shoot the flag, prepare for the shot, etc. The most efficient way is for everyone to head straight to their ball, even if they’re walking.

Unfortunately most courses from in the Nicklaus/Palmer era basically require a cart because the layout was designed for them.

    Well said.

A 4 hour round gives you 13 min 20 sec per hole, very achieveable. But also, why TF are courses putting out tee times in 8 minutes increments…

Oh and keeping up with the groups ahead of yours. Even when the group behind you isn’t keeping up.

Always play in 4 hours even when no one is waiting on you.

If you play in 4.5 hours on a busy sold out day then you’re the problem. Even when no one is waiting behind you.

Hurry the fuck up so the course can tell the slow group to skip holes instead of only being a hole or a few shots behind.

How are you supposed to get distances while your playing partner is hitting? You’d be at their ball if you’re in a cart with them, not your own. This makes club selection impossible as well. If you’re close enough then, yeah, walk over to your ball and get ready, but in my group we’re often far apart.

I think a gps with front, middle, back is all most of us need. Take the range finder out of the bag.

My friend checks his phone between shots. He is a boomer and apparently he can never miss a phone call. He is surprised every time we get to his ball. “Oh shit, what’s the yardage? Uh 160 ok.”Grabs his club a few practice swings then hits. Never considers the factors of anything. Uphill lie, wind or elevated green. It’s all by yardage. He can’t figure out how he is short. “Short I always hit my 7i 160. Did you give me the wrong yardage?” No dude the wind is blowing 50 today🤣

My hot take is that long rounds of golf (4.5hr+) are not due to any shot routine, they are due to bad golfers. 5-10 minute ball searches every tee shot, countless 30 yard duffs / tops, and the insistence by golfers to grind out every 9,10, and 11 on every hole (to get their moneys worth😾). If you can’t even save a double, I say pick up and move on. It’s the courteous thing to do for golfers behind you as your slow play throws off tee times for the entire day.

  19. allothernamestaken

Looking for balls. If you can’t find it in a minute or two, forget it and move on. I especially hate it when people get others in their group to join in on the search party when they could be finishing the hole.

The amount of people I see just standing there doing nothing in between shots is insane
