The New Jersey Devils lost their 3rd preseason game, losing 5-3 to the Washington Capitals.
The top two lines made an appearance tonight; and had their chances.
Brenden Dillon showed some of his offensive upside with a goal and an assist.
Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier also scored for the NJ Devils.
Is Seamus Casey here to stay?!?
I discuss all of this and much more in this video.

Keefe said he will play his regulars on Friday, and that the lineup will reflect their regular lineup going into Prague. I don't care about the preseason losses. I also wouldn't be surprised if they get off to a slow start to the season, given the new coach, the new system, and the abbreviated preseason because of the Prague series. There may be a time for fans to be concerned, but this ain't it.
Half our starting d didn’t play it’s preseason means nothing
True, but last night's preseason, looked like a regular season game from last year. I was looking to see if Ruff somehow made it back on our bench. Stupid sloppy play, Jack doing his turnover thing trying to thread passes through traffic instead of making a safe play and keeping offensive zone pressure with a forecheck. Casey looks like he is going to force his way into the lineup.
Last night, goes to show, that you can have anyone in the net and lose playing the game this group seems to migrate too.
So, it's still really a system problem, lack of discipline, and some trying to be hot dogs out there. They play sloppily, fall behind, someone puts on a cape, the team falls short….rinse wash repeat.
NO forecheck, no hitting, no structure…just a bunch thinking their talent alone will beat a veteran NHL club.
Always great content ACE! Keefe is already calling out some of the boys for not playing hard. Holding them accountable early,.I love it!
Casey has been our best player this preseason
PTSD of last year getting scored on in bunches by the Capitals.
I was there and I know it’s preseason but felt eerily similar to last years play . The defense was soft , Washington gained the zone walking in , the offensive chemistry was off , so many times great set ups turn to bad passes , we could not keep sustained pressure in the o zone . Got outshot nearly 2-1 or just about . Really made markstrom make many grade a saves . And of course the big one not playing the full 3 periods . Decide to wake up in 3rd and make a come back and fall short . All to similar to last season
If Markstrom ends up regressing terribly… When do we blame the goalie coach? It can't be a coincidence that every goalie that enters our system crumbles
I am ok with using the preseason to settle the pieces in the right places. Chemistry is going to take a bit of time under a new coach. I love the fact we finally have depth at the D Line. Panic time will start at the end of October.
I also wonder what isthe plan for Jeremy Brodeur? He does seem to do rather well in Adirondack Thunder? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3y5oV6_YaA
I watched this game way too often last year, the D was atrocious and the Devils forwards do nothing for two period then turn it on in the 3rd and try (all too often, unsuccessfully) to salvage something from the night. I hope Keefe addresses this aspect of "Devil's hockey" immediately. On a positive note, Casey looked great puck handling. He is giving Keefe a tough choice to make.
you are way off with your JV comments. Washington had weakened squad too.
None of the teams are playing their starters that much right now. So, our subs are losing to their subs which isn't great either. And, I agree in that we can't afford to get off to a slow start. Can't get those games back.
If we lose all our pre games Keefe coaching career is over he had a good team in Toronto most the time he was there and the time they get to the second round they didn't have the depth they had 2 to 3 years ago when they should have got past the first round them making it to the second was a fluke it wasn't cause of him coaching
With luke and nemic injured they should bring in a defense guy that can play in the top 4 than when they come back he can play on bottom with nemic I know I say bring in a top six forward but with an aging goalie we need to bring in defense
With Casey they better be looking at his defensive game we have 3 offensive defense guys in luke Hamilton and nemic we don't need a fourth even if he plays a couple game's
Great comparison with mma. Definitely would like to see them doing well in pre season so it can carry over.
I think we will be fine but honestly a little scary we have not won a game yet.
On the positive side, I personally believe dougie, Jack, Bratt, Meier and Hischier look great.
Markstrom gives me a bit of worries but 50% of goaltending is defensemen and we were lacking that last night.
I’m not scared for our goaltending in general tho just because of how good Allen can be. He looked great vs Montreal.
Overall I think it is somewhat important to get the win vs the islanders Friday. Let that carry over to our first two games.
A good start to the regular season is very important.
Between DOUGIE, Dillon, Luke, pesce (feel like I’m forgetting a defender) there should be no reason we aren’t firing clappers from the blue line every f’ing game
Not Good. Preseason or not. Golekeepers are still over the hill. Same old story. Loosing is OK. The coach is not from Devils stock and sounds like Ruff. Timo can't buy goal etc, etc and etc. I fear we are going to hear this stuff all season. Really hope I'm wrong.
Random but I think Keefe isn’t nearly as much of a players coach as many think
I want to see a win, dammit! This is gonna be a looonnnggg season…
Brett is also week to week … Casey is going …
its just preseason, so I'm not panicking, but I'm definitely disappointed so far. After the year they had last season I was really hoping they were gonna come right out the gate just hungry and angry, out for blood and playing that aggressive, fast puck controlling style we see from them at their best. As for Marky, it is just preseason, the team is sloppy in front of him, but 8 goals in 2 games does have me side-eyeing him a little. Again, not panicking, but if he doesn't have it you might as well not even play the season. Mainly my take away from this game was "okay boys, come on, wake up".
Misyul looked good as well
I love that you are on team Casey a bit more now. I totally think Casey could slot in now with Hattaka(sp) hurt but I do think Fitz is going to try like hell to send him back down to the A before he has to burn a year of his ELC. His ELC years are going to be so important with the team being up against the cap in the next few years.
