Crystal Palace will be hoping their midweek EFL Cup win over QPR (2-1) injects some life into their season after a disappointing start to the Premier League. The Eagles have failed to win their first four Premier League matches (D2, L2) for the first time since the infamous reign of Frank de Boer in 2017/18, a run that’s been all the more surprising as they ended last term with a seven-match Premier League unbeaten run (W6, D1).

The marquee result in that sequence was a 4-0 thumping of Manchester United at Selhurst Park. That continued a dramatic turnaround in the history of this matchup as, after they failed to win 12 consecutive home H2Hs across all competitions (D3, L9) between 1991 and 2020, Palace now find themselves unbeaten in the last four meetings on this ground (W2, D2), conceding just one goal in that run.

The tide may just be turning for Manchester United, who used the international break to hit the reset button, scoring ten times without reply in their two games since. A 3-0 win at Southampton last week was followed up by a 7-0 EFL Cup thumping of Barnsley in what is comfortably their biggest win under Erik ten Hag’s leadership, with the Dutchman describing it as a “perfect night”.

Given the quality of the opposition on that occasion, more skeptical United fans may not be hasty in getting carried away with such results, especially as they’ve won just two of their last eight away league matches (D2, L4). The Red Devils have also endured ‘capital punishment’ of late, winning just two of their last 16 trips to London in this competition (D4, L10), with both of those victories coming against Fulham.

Players to watch: New Palace striker Eddie Nketiah got off the mark for his new club in midweek, with that being the fourth of his last five scoring appearances to see him register the game’s opening goal. He’ll take on the task of outshining United duo Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, with the pair directly contributing to a total of nine goals in the Red Devils’ past two matches (G6, A3).

Hot stat: Just two of Man Utd’s last eight Premier League games saw both teams score on the day.
