Transfers That Never Happened & Alan In His Pants | EP 91

What really happened when Newcastle United made a bid for Wayne Rooney? Who were the most influential captains our lads ever played under? Alan has agreed to the bet, but what would it take for him to appear on MOTD in his pants?

Gary, Alan and Micah also discuss one of the best sporting arenas in the world.

  1. feels like a lot of these questions are repeated, definitely heard the first one in a previous episode. also the ones about favorite goals / most important goals and so on

  2. city will need that arena as i doubt they will get much income playing in non league football after they get kicked out of the efl

  3. I thought we bid for Rooney at Everton 27 million but ManU came in with same offer . Fergy said this bid came a year too early for Rooney but he couldn't let Rooney go anywhere else.

  4. Hahahaha Rooney going from United to Newcastle is absolutely laughable I don’t care how serious the bid was. That was never ever going to happen

  5. I remember Alan's goal that was given as own goal, it came off french blanc and at the time i was saying thats ridiculous.

  6. No Alan, the bid (or the rumour anyway) was when Rooney was still at Everton. He then happened to go to Man U instead. (I refuse to call them United … there's only 1 United – Newcastle United, a 1-club city). 🙂

  7. Would love to see peter Beardsley on here, such a superb footballer, never really see him on anything sadly. Wonder what a prime Beardsley would cost in 2024 ?

  8. As a Blackburn fan I remember the talk of a certain Zidane was rumoured to sign, but you have to remember he was at Bordeaux, and around a 22 – 23 year old – certainly an unknown name at the time. Rumoured years later that the then owner, the late, great Jack Walker had come out with the quote, "why would we sign Zidane, when we have Tim Sherwood" once people knew who Zidane was 😂

  9. In primary school I remember a rumour around Roberto Baggio meeting Dalglish, paid a restaurant a load of money to clear the place…😂

  10. I feel like Shearer got that whole Rooney story totally wrong.

We sold Woodgate to Madrid and everyone was outraged because he was such a good defender. The money was arguably too good to turn down for someone who was injured more than they were fit and fans could have lived with that if we’d done some actually planning and had a replacement lined up.

Shepherd told the fans something exciting was coming and to wait and see. We then bid for Rooney (presumably planning on converting him into a centre back…). Man U promptly outbid us and off he went.

We replaced Woodgate with Ronny Johnsen on a free transfer who went on to have an illustrious career with Newcastle, playing an incredible three times.

We then spent most of the Woodgate money on panic buying defenders in January, including most of it going on Boumsong in a deal that was investigated as part of an enquiry into dodgy deals in football.

There was no point during Rooney’s time at Man U that a bid could have realistically been made for him by Newcastle.

    Butchered that one, Al.

  11. Micah, you're selling yourself cheap.
I'm wearing Calvin Klein s, now £68 for 3 in John Lewis,(Mike Ashley) and they are smaller, tighter and not what they were.
You need to call out ,Balenciaga, fella and see if they can do something for us men, with a bigger thigh!!!

  12. It was when Rooney was at Everton. 2004 I think as I was on holiday in Zante and read about it sat by the pool

  13. Only 1 big Meeks think fook. A love Gary like the da nAlan the uncle or older brother. Neville kean wright gr8. Wright shld be here tho. RIF Takes it

  14. Newcastle put a bid in when he was at Everton, not Man Utd, Rooney has said he would have joined Newcastle if Manchester Utd had never come in for him

  15. The Rooney bid was while he was at Everton Alan, not Man U. The offer was accepted and then Man U put in a bid and he chose them. We had offered a couple of million more than them too

  16. I'm 48 and a villa fan,but I have to agree with you on beardsley what a play one of my all time favourites, when I was a kid playing with my mates I always pretended to be beardsley, just wish I could of played like him 😂

  17. Ruel Fox. Cracking little player nobody talks about from the Newcastle days.
    Whatever happened to him?

  18. the newcastle bid went in when rooney was at everton and was the reason united went in when they did

ferguson was planning on waiting another year.

Newcastle were serious players back then. broke the world record for shearer, brought in owen for serious dough

rooney would have went to nufc had united not stepped up

  19. I think Alan is wrong about Newcastle trying to sign Rooney from Man U. Rooney was at Everton at the time and had fallen out with David Moyes and was determined to move. Newcastle met the valuation and Rooney was happy with the terms Newcastle offered him supposedly and would have taken the move to get away from Moyes but when Man U bid the same amount he decided to go there instead because Newcastle were mid table and Man U obviously far better placed to win trophies
