What’s Next for LIV Golf? | The Fried Egg Golf Podcast

Garrett Morrison, Andy Johnson and Joseph LaMagna discuss the future LIV Golf as the league’s third season wraps up at the Team Championship in Dallas this upcoming weekend. The episode begins with the three discussing what they are In and Out on after a busy weekend of golf at the Irish Open and Solheim Cup. Then, the conversation turns to LIV Golf with a recap of the Individual Championship, won by Jon Rahm on Sunday, before the trio debate where the league should go from here. Topics include a new television deal for the league, the need for more youth in the player pool, and the importance of a development tour to the success of the main circuit. To wrap things up, Garrett, Andy and Joseph share some Recommendations for some fall viewing, listening, and eating.

  1. The JT O'Sullivan "QB School" recommendation is a great one. Really instructive to understand "why" certain QBs thrive in certain systems and others do not (he does a deep dive into many other football topics as well…). Not sure about JT's LSU connection but he was drafted years ago by the Saints out of UC Davis.

  2. 9:35 “US ratings are really meaningful for the PGA Tour and its financial wellbeing”. The real purpose of this pod. “What does the PGAT need to do to survive” smugly disguised as a critique/speculation on the future of LIV.
These guys are like the dollar-store NLU wannabe’s. The diminished tour will prob be able to carry NLU along such that they can make a living. I hope you guys have other things going for you.

  3. Wow we should put tournaments in the UK so Americans can watch football in the afternoon???? I forgot it’s all about us – curious besides Jimmy Walker – forget who was watching who was playing – the DP Tour already has the tournaments – we’ve already decimated what is a great Tour – you can still watch great golf early in the am on the golf channel
    From great courses –

  4. I think you guys are thinking about LIV business too linearly and not enough multi-dimensionally in terms of value creation events.

  5. Unless LIV needs the revenue, they should stick it out streaming on Youtube with no commercials. It is a superior viewing experience as a fan compared to 1:1 Coverage:Commercial ratio on NBC, CBS, or any of those networks showing the PGA tour, plus they don't have to cut coverage to Law and Order SVU when the TV window is up. LIV going to Peacock, for instance, would cause a loss of viewers even if it garnered LIV some TV/media contract money.

Although Youtube numbers may not be large now, LIV is gaining a reputation for streaming free there each week and I do believe streaming numbers will exceed cable network numbers in viewing numbers over the next few years so long as the product remains interesting. LIV may actually be ahead of the curve on this one with the coverage of their product being on Youtube.

  6. I like the idea of a new tour. Tournaments are franchises owned by the host golf club or individuals and share revenue like most sport leagues. Majors, Ryder Cup, and Olympics remain independent.
