Combined my love of golf and Iceland.

Too dark to play unfortunately.

I have a core memory of iceland and golf. I was an avid watcher of Scott’s Cheap flights and saw a ticket from where I live to Iceland for $450. Booked some Airbnb’s and off I went. Played 3 courses. The first I got to what was known as a popular course near Reykjavík It was closed but someone was in the “pro shop?” I told him what was going on (that I had just landed off the plane, the place I was going was closed unannounced and I was just looking to get a few holes in) and he loaned me some clubs. As I went around alone and as it started to get dark, a car with its lights came and waited for me. It was the same guy from the club who just wanted to see me in. I skipped the last 2 holes because it was so dark. (and because someone was waiting on me) 2nd day, I learned what a Links course was. Guy laughed at me for hitting the ball so high, showed me how to hit it low and roll it up to the green. It was SOOO cold. I was dressed in thermal underwear, a face/head cover and these giant gloves. Last day I played was another Links course and there were 0 people on the course. It was middle of the day, the guys told me to drop off my clubs at the clubhouse when I was done and to play as many as I wanted. It was so much less commercial golf and just a place to play a game in beautiful landscapes.

I’ve played a LOT of rounds of golf but there was something very different about playing there. Playing against the elements, courses that just kind of grew instead of being manicured sitting in neighborhoods. The more I type, the more I want to schedule that trip again.
