I disagree with you folks about ONE.
If we go off what Mikey and ONE said, he was to cut at the absolute high end 20 pounds. Not 35. He was 'hovering around 150'. 15 pounds, give or take a couple, isn't unheard of in 3 days even if it is a shit ton.
If Mikey was offered both the title fight and the open weight match, but Mikey insisted on trying to make weight for the title, the ONLY thing they could have done to make the 'right' decision was to just cut the fight at that point then no one gets paid. If you listen to Mikey speak about the sport, he absolutely would have put the pressure on himself to make weight. I think even if ONE HADN'T offered him the fight for the title, he still would have brought it up. Mikey is fucking crazy.
Chatri and is ego I agree slightly, but even still we have to look at what HE has done. By the numbers, ONE isn't just the biggest sport property in Thailand, it's the most watched thing on TV PERIOD. He HAS built the biggest combat sports property in Asia. For my money's worth they're #2 to the UFC when it comes to combat sports. I watch it more than the UFC at this point. It's a good fucking product that feels different. I like that Chatri is more a part of the product of ONE, even if it's a bit hammy sometimes. It's not like a random fuck gave him his black belt. It's Renzo fuckin Gracie.
Plus, if you folks can set all that shit aside and still talk so highly of the fights, what are we doing here? Literally a 'fuck you, Chatri' before saying the event was amazing?
I'd have an ego too if I could put on events like that when everything is going to shit. I was nervous as hell leading up since I was seeing this event in person, thinking ONE was fucking it up with the Mikey situation until I heard he was offered a different weight.
Good on you folks for getting my watch and small book defending ONE, but you spent half your podcast on it and came away positive, but I certainly wouldn't have guessed that from your title and first few minutes.
