Base for outdoor hitting mat

Hey all,

I just got a good deal on a golf mat (Trustrike) and due to lack of space in my house I’m putting it outside. I’m trying to think of a good base to put underneath to protect it from dirt, keep it level, and keep it from sliding (if that’s necessary).

I bought some rubber mats originally thinking I could level the dirt a lot better than I was able to.

Does anyone have any ideas on things to put below it? I was thinking just some plywood but don’t want it to rot.

Thanks!

I just built one of these.

I spent about $100 at Home Depot. I bought four 2x3x8 inch boards for a frame and 8 2x2x8 foot boards for the “studs” and eight or so 5.5″ wide fence slats.

Then I cut them down to be form a platform that was big enough for a 5×5′ mat with a little bit left over for my skytrak to sit on the platform off the mat.
I used 4.5″ decking screws to hold the platform together and then 2.5″ screws to secure the fence slats to the platform. I pre-drilled all the holes, but it was pretty quick. Felt like I was on the pit crew when I was banging out the fence slats.

The “studs” are something like 9.5 inches apart and you should do the math to make sure you have the right number of boards/slats/etc, but it under 2 hours of construction and it seems to work pretty well for me.
