Golf Simulator

Requesting recommendations on hitting distance, screen size, and aspect ratios!

Alright, I’ve made 2 precursory simulator set-ups, wasn’t happy, and sent all the stuff back. I’m doing it for real this time. I have not embarked upon many projects like this, so I’m asking for help.

I have decided the best area to swing is pretty much directly underneath the garage door overhead unit. If I do this, I won’t hit the main track or either side tracks. (Of course the garage door has to be closed, like in the last picture).

Therefor, if standing on the red X in the first photo, I’m approx 9-11/12 feet away from the back wall.

Since the screen won’t be flush to the back wall, and it will probably be 1-2 feet in front of the back wall, this would make an approx 8-10 feet of hitting space from ball to screen.

What ideal impact screen size do you think is best from that distance?

if my screen height will be approx 8-8.5 feet (probably mounting to the ceiling or back wall) should I try to maintain an aspect ratio of 16:10 and therefor get a 12 foot screen? would that be too much screen from the proposed hitting distance?

Also, there is a small raised lip approx 3 feet away from the back wall. I’ve always thought about the screen going directly infront of that but have recently challenged that idea so that the screen is behind the lip (closer to the back wall). Would anybody recommend putting it in front?

I plan to have a retractable screen. Unsure if I will DIY this, MeTech, Carl’s place, etc.

I do not plan to do a permenant enclosure here. I cannot dedicate my entire garage to just the sim (unfortunately)

Notes:

  1. I am not swapping out my overhead garage unit. I need a whole seperate main roller tube conversion before I can even swap it (thought about it)

1.5 I have thought about standing to the right / left of the garage overhead unit, but directly underneath it is better for so many reasons. Mainly because it widens up the space.

  1. Wife will still pull in and park on the left side

  2. On the right side there will be some removable weight equipment

  3. Using EMlite

  4. Guess what my dog is

If you made it this far, thank you tremendously. I am not a DIY’er at all but I’m up for this challenge. Please share any thoughts you have regarding this post.
