How To Choose The Right Cycling Shoes – A Buyer's Guide

Road or MTB shoe? Laces or straps? In this video, Simon talks through some of the main features to consider when buying your next pair of cycling shoes.

Just like most cycling equipment, there’s a ton of choice out there when picking out footwear. Firstly, work out if most of your riding is on the road or off-road. Mountain bike shoes have grippier soles that are more suited to walking around in. Road shoes have a stiff, smooth sole which is better suited to transferring power. The stiffer the sole, the better the power transfer (so the theory goes).

The most expensive shoes on the market will be super-light, often with a full carbon sole, with a natural leather upper – the Fizik shoes we were checking out were kangaroo leather. Of course, the most important thing is how well your shoe fits – comfort comes from a nice, snug fit and a bit of ventilation that doesn’t let too much cold air in.
