MORE POWER!!!! Subscribe here: www.youtube.com/@therightcar?sub_confirmation=1
But it’s not just that the new Mk8.5 Golf GTI has more power, it’s the way it handles that power, the way it lets you explore the extra 15kW, that makes it feel like a different car.
The engine mapping has been retuned, and this thing now acts differently when driven hard.
But it doesn’t act differently in the daily driving situations where the GTI shines – it rides beautifully, has great steering, and now has a MUCH more likeable media system with better controls!
Watch the video and see if you’re as excited by this GTI as I was!

Proof that not only the Chinese copy, blatant wheel rip off from Alfa.😅
Just looking at the sidewall size of the tyres and imagining what will happen when you hit a hole in our roads.
How’s the weather in Wolfsburg Matt?…😉😎 Looks a bit overcast like here in central Victoria! 🌧🤪
No electric rivals?
The wheels are hideous.
Just buy an i30N it's better in most ways performance except comfort
Real buttons on the steering wheel!!! Yay!!!
I have soft spot for a Golf GTi… I’d love to have one.
Bloody horrible wheels, and the steering wheel is on the wrong side. 😊
Very keen to take this for a test drive. The latest i30N sedan and hatch were just too firm imo for a daily
Nice job!
It's an anachronism in this day and age. Should be at least a hybrid
The Volkswagen Group sure has a great variety of vehicles. Thanks for the non electric vehicle review.
A very nice car! 👌
Love the GTI. Such a rich history.
Did you drive the mk8 it’s the same car
Still cant believe they forgot the volume knob
Alfa Romeo should get paid for those wheels
Hi can i ask do you know when the mk8.5 gti will make its way to Australia?
still prefer 7.5
Awesome Matt. Thank you. If this has an increased number of ponies then theoretically so should the torque. What is it at now? Will we be seeing the same numbers for the new R model as per the 20th anniversary one? Perhaps a little more again as the engine still has the flexibility to extract more power without loosing any reliability aspect. Can’t wait for your R review as that would be tempting especially with the larger screen and actual physical buttons on the steering wheel. 👍👍
Any idea on when this car will release in North America?
Can't you turn off the lane assist?
Rear space is pretty marginal. Get a Civic hybrid with loads more space, 315nm, 135kw for effortless second car runabout.
Re the infotainment, the current MK8 running software version 1941 and above is very stable.
I'm finding the haptics a non-issue, and easy to use once you become familiar.
Overall, the MK8 is a very good car, and with the 8.5 tweaks, the running improvements are welcome although the new infotainment screen is too large for me.
Tops review Matt.
Looks good – have always liked the GTI and they really do seem to have upped their game on the 8.5. Am I right that they've ditched the dipstick? Couldn't seen one during that quick peak under the bonnet. Hardly a deal breaker though.
No stick shift, no deal. 👎
wunderbar!
I'm glad I'm not a brand snob. So Hyundai all day long.
What do I think? I think it needs a manual. I have a manual mk6 gti and couldn't imagine a reason why I'd sell it to get an auto. The new model looks nice, but the mk6 still brings a smile on every drive.
Is the hat an ironic Chav prop?
Wonder if the 8.5 will run on the same octane gas as the 8?
What a great car. More videos about this GTI please!
Owned 5 GTI’s. Really disliked the last gen and infotainment so didn’t buy one.
Probably gonna snag one of these though.
Anyone know about Canada? Will it have push buttons 🙂
I’m on my 4th GTI in a row now (and many, many other VW’s before these). I’ve had my mk8 40th anniversary edition for over a year now and love it. It has the less frustrating S model infotainment which was the only thing about the car that had me worried before buying it. But it’s not an issue now that I own one. I do like the MK 8.5 front bumper with the fangs and the tail lights look good. Not a huge fan of the side, emblem placement or design, and I could do without the giant screen, I think the one in my car is just big enough. I do like the crisper headlights on this new car. Overall, I like it. Just wish it came in a manual.
Do the current gti’s still have the dsg issues of previous ones and make for expensive repairs out of warranty?
Just to confirm Torque figures 370nm or 400nm??
What I just realized is that with the 8 and up the dsg doesn't have the option to change gears on the shifter. I know it has paddle shifters but that's not the same thing, the 7.5 really was peak gti.
Now it looks like a proper GTi. The outgoing Mk8 Golf GTi front was definitely NOT it.
Volkswagen was forced to remove the old buttons the mk 8 had but mercedes is not forced like WHY?
