MacIntyre, a Scottish golfer, won by a hair, edging out Australian Adam Scott by one shot after trailing Scott by two with just three to play in the final round. Then on the final hole, MacIntyre was able to squeeze by Scott, nailing a birdie from 20 feet out to get the win.
“When the expectations were at their highest, Robert MacIntyre delivered,” she wrote in her Instagram post. “He delivered for himself, his family and for all of Scotland. It was an unbelievable performance on the back nine to become just the second player from Scotland to win their National Open.
“Watching thousands of fans serenade him with their National Anthem is one of the cooler moments from this season I won’t soon forget. Enjoy this one!”
For MacIntyre, his win was very much in doubt as Scott had a two-shot lead after nailing a birdie on the 16th hole. The Scotsman then hit an eagle on 17 before sinking a birdie on the 18th, sealing his come-from-behind win by playing some of the best golf of his career.
