Big Ten Preseason DEFENSE POWER RANKINGS | B1G Nation Segment

The Big Ten Conference may be the conference of defense entering the 2024 season as there are a lot of great defenses in the conference. Does Ohio State or Michigan have the better D-Line? Is Iowa once again an elite defense? Where does Oregon stack up?

  1. I think MSU will be better defensively than ya all think. Yes they lost some good seasoned players however they still have a few veterans, some transfer came in of decent quality. Agree their linebacking corps is their strength but their secondary has also quietly improved from its horrid state of affairs back in 2021-2022. They also now have good defensive coaching.

They play some potent offenses and will I've up some scores but they also play some weak offenses. Come the second half of the season that defense will be more experienced and will tighten up significantly.

I can't complain about you predicting them 18th to start the season but my prediction for the end of the season is they'll be somewhere between the 8th-10th. best defense in the BIG10.

  2. @Big Ten Ten, who’s your favorite team in College Football? Because I assume that one of your favorite teams is in the Big Ten! Since you’re always covering Big Ten sports!

  3. Yes, Oregon has a few new pieces on the backend of their defense, but they are all experienced veterans, and pretty good players to boot. I expect Oregon’s defense to improve this season, and they were a top 10-15 defense last year. Let’s go Ducks!!🦆

  4. Oregon defense is improved from last year when it was a top 20 unit, and now it also gets to play against big10 offenses. 5th in the conference is funny.

  5. The only defense that is comparable to Oregon’s is Ohio State and maybe Michigan, since Michigan only bring back 4 starters, that started more than half of their games, in 2023.

21 of 22 players for Oregon started last year for Oregon or the school they transferred from. As of now, I would take 290lb DE Birch and 275lb DE Uiagalelei, over 255lb DEs Sawyer and JTT. I think Matayo is already as talented as senior JTT, as a Sophomore. And I think Birch is about to realize that comp he had coming out of S.C. in HS. And I’d rather take 330lb DTs Harmon and Caldwell over OSUs DTs too.

As far as the LBs, Oregon has two true LBs since they both play a 4-2-5 base defense. OSU’s second LB was a Safety last year, and the third doesn’t have a ton of experience…he was just a high ranked recruit. For Oregon, they have maybe the smartest LB in the country in Bassa, who is a workhorse. And the second LB transferred from Iowa, so he is ready for the big10. He was injured for the first 3gms last year, but he showed why he was such a coveted transfer, due to his size and speed. He’s also a great cover LB. And third, is Devon Jackson, who would be the 2nd fastest player on OSUs team. He runs 23mph and it’s his 3rd year in the system. Meaning he’s an old school player, who waited till his jr season to play a lot.

In the back end, Oregon has the best lockdown corner in cfb…since you have to play the ball to be a lockdown corner…something Burke and igbinosun don’t do at all! And the rest of the guys are ready to show the Big10 why they screwed up by not recruiting them. They’re all 22-24 mph guys, and they’re all physical, like Burke and Igbinosin. The wild card is the #1 CB from the JC ranks, since that’s a guy that would’ve usually went to Bama or UGA in the past. He’s 6’3” and he is athletic. And at safety, they broughtt in some fast and physical guys. But the one im excited for is Aaron flowers, who is a bigger hitter, and just as talented as Caleb Downs. And the 2nd true freshman we got transferred from Bama after Saban retired. So we have a lot of talent in the secondary.

  6. As a USC fan, I freely admit that our defense has been horrible the last 3 years. But we have an entirely new staff, that might be the best in the country. No way we are the 14th best defense in the conference. I will say that Ted has done his research.
