Do you know how far you should hit your irons based on how you compare with other golfers in your handicap range? Well to see how you stack up, we’ve enlisted the help of golf data giants Arccos to give us a detailed breakdown of how far you should be hitting every iron in your bag and where the biggest distance gaps tend to lie.

Create a smaller and larger practice golf ball for the range. I think this will help golfers with contact.
I think the reason the PW gap is large from a 9i is its a club people are likely to take some distance off (perhaps rather than using a full gap wedge, or they may not have one)
You asked why the gaps are so large between the PW and 9i for higher handicappers. The simple answer is what they are doing with lofts.
The low handicappers tend to have more blades or traditionally lofted clubs with 4 degrees separating each club. The higher the handicapper, the more likely they are of having "player distance" or "game improvement" irons. If you look at the lofts, you will see that the PW to 9i is 5 degrees (and some have an actual 6 degrees of difference) but the mid to long irons only have a 2-3 degree difference. I have been saying for years that this is ass-backwards. The lofts should be closer together for the scoring clubs, not the other way around. My buddy has Srixon 585 irons, for example. His 4 iron is 24 degrees and his 5 iron is 26 degrees, which is why he only hits his 4-iron 5-7 yards farther than his 5 iron (so he scrapped it for a hybrid). But, his PW is 44 degrees and his 9-iron is 39 degrees, so he hits his 9i 15+ yards further than his PW. Of course he does….that's what happens when there is a 5 degree difference at the top end of the bag but 2 degrees at the bottom. MAKES NO SENSE. Hey, OEMS, STOP DOING THIS!!!!!!
Out of interest, how does Arccos get carry distance rather than total distance?
It doesn't matter how far you're "supposed" to hit you clubs. It matters how far (carry) you KNOW you get from each club.
How far on hybrids please and fairway woods
Handicap golfers don't deloft their wedges like the best players, they add loft and use cheaper balls that launch higher which is magnified with their wedges.
My distances are 25 handicap average but I regularly shoot 90. If you claim to hit it further than average for your handicap you need to learn to pitch and putt better because you're throwing shots away somewhere!
Are those arccos numbers men only or combined with women?
Club distance is not a true measure of handicap. I hit my clubs further than every golfer on the LPGA tour…yet my handicap is a lot higher.
A lot of these numbers must be age related as well. 20 years ago I was a worse golfer, but hit it further. Now I'm older I've realised its not all about 300 yard drives and I have a much better short game.
Gapping is probably down to the lofts of the clubs being used. As handicaps go up the ball striking won’t be so good and the longer clubs need decent clubhead speed to keep the gaps equal. With modern power bats the lofts are so strong that a wedge is more like a nine a five is like a four hence you end up with more hybrids and wedges in the bag as the set irons only work from wedge to five or even six for some people.
Handicap has nothing in common with distance.
Can't be carry distances with Arccos data. Even being there it's not easy to evaluate that (except when pitching on a green). So that's total distances. Not that it should do a big difference (at least on the lower part of the handicap spectrum) as the roll out on irons should be minimal. On top of that, another methodology question: is the median a "median between recorded shots" (ie the distance so that there are as many shots with said iron for said hcp class that landed further as there were landing shorter) or a median of "averages per players" (the distance so that there are as many players in the base that have an average distance further than this as there are players with a shorter one)?
I find it very confusing to have this sort of data. How do you compare the carry distance of my 7 iron (34° blade) with the carry distance of modern "power bats" with a 28° "7 iron" that flies miles in the sky and spins 30% less? Shaft length might even be different… What's the need, as well? As long as your irons fly a consistent distance that you know, you're golden. We might as well have the irons with their distance stamped on them instead of numbers.
Pointless video! It’s all down to loft and delivery.
How do Arccos get the carry distance for each club?
This must be female golf data surly otherwise I'm a much better golfer than I thought
All very fine statistics wise ……… THE ONLY STAT MISSING THE LOFT of the various clubs used ! ! ! ………. modern 7-irons can range from 29 degrees (or less ! ! ) back to traditional 34 degrees ………… so a modern 29 degree 7-iron would equate to my traditional 6-iron, etc., etc., etc…………and whilst I appreciate modern irons have more height/stopping power on greens, we are still talking about how far a club hits the ball on the full ……….. so I think this review requires much more reference to the club loft degrees involved …………. look forward to Golf Monthly feedback on my comments ??????????
as someone who carries my 7iron 170-175 but cannot break 100 this makes me sad XD
