The luxurious Wild Dunes Resort is located on the Isle of Palms, a short hop from Charleston and a magical place to spend some golf and leisure time in South Carolina. Blessed with a mild year-round climate, South Carolina is a popular golfing retreat outside the hot summer months, and Wild Dunes, with 36 excellent holes, is a terrific option.

  1. When did you film this? Over seeded fairways, tee boxes and most likely greens. Bermuda when "in season: brings in a whole nother faucet to these courses. Most of the low-country SC tracks are tight, target golf. Kiawah, Hilton Head, Wild Dunes, Blufton, Fripp Island etc. tend to put a premium shot selection. To answer your question(s), don't care who designed it, how does it play. Are there clear site lines, Is it "contrived", meaning 4 great holes, but had to slip in a few janky holes just to make do.
Great stuff my man, always enjoy!

  2. I look forward to playing the old masters Colt, Braid ,Fowler and J F Abercrombie come to mind….I like the fact that you can defiantly see some of the designers traits in their courses

  3. Sorry Rory, has to be said. That's the closest you'll be getting to an Eagle on that paddock.

  4. Looks like a course you have to plot around carefully. Ref designers- I think the same as you but say you visit an area with a number of courses and you're not sure which to go to, I think I would go to the one with a name behind it over the others.

  5. Hi Rory, putting well. As a queenslander I have been fortunate enough to play two of Greg Norman designed courses (Pelican Waters, Brookwater). They are both great in there different ways but both very stern tests of golf. I think Greg must be trying to make us amateurs into driving gods. Some holes can be very lonnggg!🤣 Enjoy the rest of your trip, cheers

  6. Hi Rory ,

  7. In a study conducted several years ago, the cost of owning real estate (Translation: A HOUSE) on a Tom Fazio golf course was higher than any other name designer, which may or may not say something about the desirability to live there.

You should know better than to look at only the total yardage of a course to decide where to play from. Recreational golfers would be better served to take note of the course SLOPE rating instead (do UK courses use course rating and slop rating yet?). As a #7, slope ratings between 125 and the low 130s should be just about right.

My shot tracking software doesn't even have a place to ENTER fairways hit on Par 3s. 😳

  8. If I am correct, that the first course Fazio did himself. He has another in North Myrtle Beach at the Barefoot resort which I played. I noticed Fazio has narrow fairways. Dye courses have turtle shell greens, Nicholas courses have trees in the middle of the fairway and Arnold courses have a lot of water trouble

  9. I haven't played courses designed by all those people you mentioned, but from my experience I would say that one or two of them are not shy of lending their name to a course for a few bucks. And the quality, whilst undeniably is good, is not the premium experience you would expect.

  10. played these courses 4 years ago loved them have been to the resort many times and vacationed there potentially going back there cool video rory

  11. Hey Rory! Great video! I am trying to figure out what course to play when my wife and I go to Wild Dunes in May. What is your preference? Links or Harbor course? My wife does not play golf too much so I don't want her to quit on me after the first hole!
