Responding to Cody Rhodes

From The Stevie Richards Show episode 4 – Responding to Cody Rhodes

A few days ago, friend of our show Chris Van Vliet posted a sit down interview with current WWE Champion, Cody Rhodes – https://youtu.be/vDcJyyYLbPE?si=pDzLrqiPd2iExuQ6

During the interview, Cody Rhodes invoked the name of Stevie Richards in somewhat of a snarky manner, regarding Stevie Richards telling all young wrestlers on YouTube how they don’t know how to wrestle. Now, does Stevie Richards get upset over the comments? Absolutely not!

Aside from the free (and appreciated) plug for Stevie Richards Fitness, Stevie knows that Cody Rhodes has a rather dry, sarcastic sense of humour, and that no ill will was intended… probably!

The conversation then veers to other comments Cody Rhodes made regarding his departure from AEW. He’s never stated the explicit reasons, but in the Chris Van Vliet interview, he drops hints that there was a bad fallout at the end, as well as suggesting that AEW was only a stop gap until he returned to WWE. Stevie Richards analyses Cody Rhodes interesting comments.

  1. Pre-AEW Cody had support because he was betting on himself and he became one of the boys when he joined Bullet Club.
After AEW started, as EVP in a suit and separating from the Bucks and Kenny, he did have a certain Vince McMahon aura to him. And this is to an audience that grew up on Stone Cold vs Mr McMahon, so they were waiting for him to be a heel authority figure since Tony wanted to stay off screen.
Cody returning to WWE, he was the prodigal son coming home. And that home had Roman’s dominant Bloodline, so Cody was immediately an underdog. The current WWE audience grew up on John Cena, and Cody was an underdog that had hustle loyalty and respect going. So it was much easier for the WWE audience to get behind

  2. He didn’t fit the aew mold Cody people want more of a wacky Goff take on aew 💜💜💜 Kenny omega doesn’t fit in either Kenny omega doesn’t fit in with the aew roster as well 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

  8. Cody kinda nepo, he would never understand the real struggle or grind of the indies. Love your work Stevie, keep it up!

  9. Im am a wrestling fan I didn’t turn on Cody in AEW.. AEW fans thought Kenny omega was the end all be all.. they thought we was getting American New Japan.

  10. Im am a wrestling fan I didn’t turn on Cody in AEW.. AEW fans thought Kenny omega was the end all be all.. they thought we was getting American New Japan.

  11. Cody saw that many fans were getting tired of "edgy " type faces. A revamp of the "vanilla face", who nobody was trying, was overdue. That was never gonna work in AEW(plus, that stupid neck tattoo), but he stuck to his guns and took it to where it WOULD work. I think he'll end up back in AEW though.

  12. I commented on Chris's channel when I heard Cody make that comment. I have never heard Stevie be disrespectful toward anyone. Stevie is probably the most respectful of any of the retired wrestlers that have podcasts. Stevie simply points out the obvious mistakes, but he also points out when something is done right. I was surprised when Cody said that.

  13. I think that's not accurate. I think it was over exposure in AEW and everyone knowing he was never going to be the world champion, compounding with the way his programs went. Most of the new guys came in facing Cody and he ended up winning in the end, with exception to Malika. In WWE, he's like the ultimate underdog. Not only does he have his previous tenure and his family history, but he's coming in as an AEW guy. I think now his being over is fleeting, I think Kevin Nash is an idiot but he was right in saying it's more entertaining to watch the face chase the champion rather than watching them have it

  14. Cody is a serious professional wrestler. AEW is a company full of PWG indie goofs. Much like CM Punk, Miro, and Ricky Starks, he just didn't fit.

  15. They were very mean to me, the children’s Village counselors, they were gonna lock me in the boiler room if I stay longer very mean to me, the children’s Village counselors very mean to me, the children’s Village 💜💜💜counselors 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

  16. They were very mean to me yet, children’s Village very mean to me 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

  17. It would be all too easy for James and Stevie to follow the podcasting herd and just upload their highlights videos and have them used for the sole purpose of AEW bashing which has become all too common place. I applaud both of them for not going down that road but rather endeavour to be constructive.

As for the comments on AEW itself, it does feel like it's the equivalent of a weather vane somewhere up Tornado alley prior to the start of the tornado season.

Being a great player doesn't mean you'll be a great coach.

  18. On Vince making an example out of Cody that is exactly why Roman won at Vince's last Wrestlemania. Had Vince not been pushed out not long after that WM without a doubt we would have gotten Roman v Rock as well.

  19. The fans turned on Cody because he came across as a bit smug and pompous and because of all the blatant Hollywood stuff … the reality show, the talk of workshopping and acting classes and such, plus Brandi is a heel through and through. Cody does seem a little salty about criticism – I don't think the DI stuff is a complete work and there was a whiff of the 'ROCKY! ROCKY! ROCKY! era with the way the announcers constantly kissed his arse and had him pushed as a superhero. Cody's a good all-round talent though and I think he's found his real home in WWE. I agree about him seeming bigger than AEW in his all-round presentation; my first experience of AEW was Cody's entrance at the beginning of Dynamite and everything seemed like a step-down after that, particularly Moxley doing a one-eye gimmick and making everything look super sloppy and the Bucks' intolerable gurning during their entrance, trying to look badass and failing miserably

  20. The funny thing is that in the same podcast that Stevie posited that Cody's failure in AEW was being too WWE-ish, we've got James saying that AEW's failure is partly down to their being too indy. I think they're damned if they do, damned if they don't. I see them getting hauled over the coals for importing too many WWE wrestlers and production staff and looking like Mini-Me WWE as a result but they never grew their audience using the Bucks' buddies from PWG. I guess Tony Khan and co had better get used to the criticism.

  21. If wrestling were real, it would be ANGLE, Brock, Severn, Shamrock, strainers, and Meng. Oh, and Chris Jericho, dudes a real badass. lol.

  22. If wrestling was real you cannot forget Kurt Angle and let's not forget that Cody wrestled in WWE before anyone ever heard of AEW

  23. You guys don't get it either. It's not about aew being indirific like so many e-fans think, We did not want to see Cody, Roman Reigns himself after all those years of Roman just running through everybody. If you go back and watch that Cody Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes match, he was loved. We wanted a Cody and Dustin tag team run and Cody spoke out against it in multiple press conferences and then proceeds to send himself on an undefeated streak only losing to drop the tnt title just to pick it back up two more times. One bring Brodie Lee and then continues said undefeated streak after Brodie until Sammie then he's out. Like what in the actual fuck…? We wanted him to hold tag team gold with his brother and do something in his career with his brother like they talked about back in WWE but Cody was too focused on himself and was beating newer talent in aew like Malaika. The boos slowly started as he just racked up wins one after another over EVERYONE. We were tired of seeing it with Roman for years and not Cody.

Point of the story was you had to watch aew to understand and most people that I hear talk about this with a microphone on YouTube or tiktok obviously didn't watch the program very much or at all.

  24. Stevie, you say perception is reality, but you are assuming what fans perception is about you. Maybe ask us what our perception is instead of telling us. To me you were always one of the great workers. You made everyone who worked with you look better. A Dolph Ziggler type. Dolph might have never really gotten over with management, but like you, the fans saw his worth. Stop selling yourself so short.

  25. I would honestly say that pets are like public education, just because you choose not to have one doesn’t mean your world isn't vastly improved in letting other people have them.

  26. I don't understand why you believe senior citizens would rule wrestling if it were real. Bob Holly and Billy Gunn would die trying to lift Oba Femi.

  27. I love Cody. I didn’t think he was coming for you. Your breakdowns do point out errors in the ring/botches that could result in injury. I think it was a playful, dry, poke at you. I think if you watch his interview with Rtruth, you can see his style of humor.
