Takomo 301 Irons vs 101T Irons! On Course Testing!

Tim took our studio testing out into the real world with an 18 hole test comparing the Takomo 301 Combo set with the Takomo 101T irons.

Could a 5 handicap player benefit from hollow body, more forgiving irons?

  1. excited to see the back 9; however, IMO, you should've played the front 9 with both sets to get equal comparison.

  2. Like test. Love site. I play 101’s. Thought, play same nine only change set. Elimates the variable of length of hole.

  3. 1.4 hcp here….I just switched from callaway rogue st pros to 301 mb cb combo set in June. I have learned that I play / strike better with 301s because I've put more thought into improving mechanics and impact and making smarter shot selections. overall accuracy has improved and even though misses are shorter, the majority are safer. All in all, I'm learning to rely on myself rather than blame it on bladier clubs. i also love working the ball.

With the hollow rogue st pros, I would rely more on the clubs and not myself, lose focus or get really get beat too long. also I found that pairing the wedges with 301s provides more consistent feel across the bag and improves accuracy across my entire game. Especially between yardage feel chips.

As a player, I would stick with the 301s all day.

FYI Jason day switched to hollow body irons to keep up with the rigorous day in and day out grind and distance requirements… and the elephant in the room, father time causing slower swing speed or endurance issues. But that's how he makes his living. So he has to keep up to do so. Just my 2 cents.

I think takomo needs to start making putters next!

  4. What about going to the 201’s? I’m having a delema, do I order the 301cb or the 201’s? I’d love to see a comparison video.

  5. Would be better to play the same holes normally with driver also. To compare only iron game. Great excuse for a new video 🙂

  6. Would love to see the 201's in something like this. Next summer I'm pulling the trigger and it's between the 101T and 201's.

  7. I think the 101s are the move. I think you gotta base your clubs of your less than ideal shots that’ll happen every round. It’s about tightening up the dispersion

  8. Would like to know why you haven’t considered the 201? I feel there’s not a lot of content with anyone playing the 201’s.

  9. If someone could make a hollow body iron with low offset and a super clean look I would be in. But sadly no one does it.

  10. Of you're striking it well, you can play any iron you want. If you're not striking it we'll…. join the crowd.

  11. Playing the same 9 with both would have been a better measure of club to club, both appear to work very well

  12. It looks like your alignment is always right in all of your shots. Also for into the grain chip shots, I watched a video of Scottie and Tiger and what they do is stand closer to the ball and hold the club more upright which will bring the heel of the club off the ground. So the only the toe will hit the ground and the club won’t grab.

  13. Saving up for my 101T set right now. Should be able to order the heads this fall. Can't wait to build these and get them into my bag!

  14. I went from blades I played all through college (D2) to the 101T. I wanted some forgiveness, distance, and being able to still work the ball. The clubs have been a perfect fit and I do not play nearly as much as I did in school. I am back shooting rounds again that I did in college.

  15. I wanted strong lofts and looks, I don't want my 7i to go miles, something like 160yards of carry is more than enough. Quite new to the game atm +20hcp and 301cb/mb set is just perfect for me. 4 iron stays in the garage, 5 doesn't come out of the bag outside of the range but the rest is just super solid, good looks and I really want some punishment from the bad shots! Note those definitely ain't butter knives once you get used to them after using some player distance trampolines! I wanted something like 201's in terms of forgiveness but man the 301CB/MB's are just so much more gorgeous. 4h goes 200yards and 6i 170yards so there is a gap in the game so I have my players distance set 5iron with me(also for the rocky lies and also if my 6iron scares me) until I learn to hit my 301CB 5i reliably and with more distance than my 6/7iron. Looks first!

  16. My first impression is that your 301 combo set works great. The Skyforger wedges seem to perform great. You lose the most shots on your putting. Also with the 101Ts you lose out on workability in the top-end of your bag.

You could consider 101T for 4-5 irons. Then the 301CBs for the 6-7 irons. And then the 301MBs for the 8-9-PW irons. Or replace the 4-7 irons with the 201s.

  17. If there were one manufacturer in the world I wished made one-length irons, it would be Takomo.. They make such pretty irons! 101Ts for sure!

  18. A one man scramble would have bin nice.
Think you lost in with the putter , irons ware both good.
Siems you needed more help with the 101 because you didn't hit them as well as the 301's

  19. When you are swinging well, there may not be a big difference, but which set gives you the most help when the golf gods have it in for you! would be the set I would put in the bag!

  20. Honestly, brother, 101T4 iron through seven iron, 301 CB eight iron and nine iron, 301 MB pitching wedge into the sky for your wedges.

Thankfully, the sets are cheap enough that you would still be playing your best golf for way cheaper than a full set of big brand clubs!
