The Open is over but the talk of the golf course isn’t… After some hard testing conditions throughout the weekend was the golf course just set up far too hard??
What a performance by Xander Schauffele to seal the deal at Royal Troon!! But here is some tlak that the Saturday was set up far to hard to make it a fair test for all competitors who made the cut at the 2024 Open Championship

To be honest I hate seeing these guys shoot 15-30 under par in majors, that’s what the other tournaments throughout the year are for. I love seeing tough conditions for majors and believe that shines the light on the winners in those conditions that they can go out and shoot the best score and really show that they earned every bit of a win at a major championship
The open is my favorite major to watch. Its the true test of golf with all the shots that need to be played. Plus a bad draw of the weather will create havoc for the players. Its fun to watch and i feel its truly the best major. Btw i am an american
On 17 Shane hit Driver, but he cut the ball so much, a huge cut, you knew the wind/rain would beat it down, and was short in a pot bunker.
We play in those conditions week in and week out. Yes, its tough. Yes, we all love playing in 25degC with the sun on our backs. It was a great test as normal golfers could relate to it. Its great to know the pros can use other clubs other than a driver, pitching wedge and putter…..ie USA tour.
How much would have the scores changed? Moving the tees forward might have the winning score even lower. Weather how ever is up to Mother Nature and she can be cruel at times😂🇦🇺🦘🪃🇦🇺🦘🪃
Another summer's day in Scotland.
Shotgun start and 4ball groups on the last 2 days, or maybe even groups going off at 1 and 10…it would have been fair to all the players.
You want the best to win, not the luckiest…
What is ‘too tough’ though? Why should there be any limit on how difficult a course is? If the winning score was 12 over par, who cares? What’s the problem? Weather made it a very different experience depending on what time you teed off but that’s not the fault of the organisers. If you don’t like a touch competition sit it out and let others take your spot who are just grateful for the opportunity.
Why do the losers always complain about conditions? Never hear the winners complain about them.
They got the weather prediction wrong every day, being a meteorologist is the best job in the world, get it wrong every single day and dont get fired.
More often than not those going out in the early morning can often have better conditions than later in the day when the wind gets up. Amateurs have the same problem but the competitions are generally over one day. Thus the early morning squad have best conditions but your body hast to be ready to play at that time. Some people don't pick up until 9 or 10 o'clock some are better after lunch but amateurs put in for the times that they can play. Pros do not have that they have early starts then next day late starts also the so called stars are grouped together because of TV to be shown in different countries. I might say here America because of the money to be made. Personally there is an easy answer for the first round you go in the hat who ever you are picked to play with thats it and the time on the first day is allotted by ballot. The next day if you was out first in the morning then the next day you are last and that runs through the list of players. Swear Word coming F==k the TV this is a game and i think that if everything is above board the the Professionals will go with that because its drawn out of the hat and is the same for all. The last two rounds depend on your score and again that is fair as to the winds that cannot be helped if its down to be all day i do not see a problem with the local amateurs along with officials deciding this. Why locals because they have a better understanding of the effects of strong winds for a different direction that the R and A do not. Go chack Harold Hennings last score when he won a pro competition way back in the sixties 83 i think it was.
This is WHY it is called The British OPEN – Lowry won in Ireland and the weather was poor at times … but he didn’t complain then !!
I blame global warming😂
i thought Saturday was great.
any day can be a tough draw in the Open. as long as its consistent for everyone its how it should be.
Shane is such a bad sport. All smiles if he’s winning, blaming everyone and everything else if he’s playing poorly. Same thing for liv-loser tyrrell.
Never enjoyed watching links golf – too easy if calm and sunny, then sometimes impossible in the wind and rain.
I was there on Saturday. There was barely any wind all day. So the guys coming out early or even the guys that weren't that far out of contention would have absolutely blitzed that course if they'd brought tees forward. An open championship defence is the elements. The weather didn't change till just after 3 when the leaders were coming out. If you want to win an open you need to battle physically and mentally. Xander dealt with the conditions on Sat perfectly. A guy like Lowry who has seen conditions like these a million times should have dealt with it better. And let's not forgot, Lowry missed about 6 fairly short putt. That cost him not the weather.
I think the US and British Open sought to be the toughest challenges of the year. I'm always hoping to see level par as the winning score.
I’m surprised at Shane’s comments grew up in Ireland surely he understands how links conditions can dramatically change thought he gave it a good go on Sunday bad luck Shane maybe next time buddy
The only way to have all
Players face the same conditions is for them to use a simulator, which would have nil appeal to an audience.
Everyone knows The Open is played on links courses, weather very often is a big factor, the wind changes with the tide. The R&A do not trick the course up regarding fairways and length of rough, normally the rough is cut a few weeks before the open and then it is whatever length it is depending on growing conditions.
I played Goswick ( open qualifier course) just before the open, I’m 25 handicap it was the 7th hole before you could see all the hole in front, fairway etc. all the others had doglegs, hitting over mounds etc.
it was tough and if the wind had picked up would have been even more of a battle but that’s links golf, it’s not target golf.

Gary Player summed it up nicely when asked and he said he takes 15 clubs into the course when too many others only take 14. The 15th being what’s between his ears. (Brain). Too many players fail to adapt to links golf/weather and fail accordingly
Just goes to show, the courses don’t always need to be made longer – less trees to allow the wind (as and when) to blow 💨
I will use a famous line from the film Skyfall…….Welcome to Scotland.
If the conditions in a round change that much the competition is no longer representative for getting the best golfer to win. Surely they have to make up a rule for this. If I can hit 5 iron against Lowry driver I beat him all day long and I can’t even qualify for the Open.
Courses and conditions should be testing if these players are the best in the world. Blame yourself for not handling it, don't lash out and blame everything else…that is piss weak!
It was essentially the same for everyone.
CRAZY GOLF TGATS ALL THE OPEN IS NIW !, YOH NEED AS MUCH LUCK AS YOU CAN
How come I don’t hear any crying from the late-early Thursday-Friday players who missed the cut, many because of the more difficult conditions that those tee times produced.
Cmon why are we talking about this.
That’s golf…..
What I dont get is at every interview all the players say they love links golf. But when you watch them playing in links conditions they look absolutly miserable.
Seems like there was a massive swing in conditions morning to afternoon. But what you gona do ? If you push the tees forward then instead of 3w they might hit a 5i, but then the easier group is now hitting a 9i or wedge.
Just have to play what the course gives you.
Doesn't anyone know how to hit a Stinger with a 2-3 iron?????…….Lowery should quit and just stick to putt-putt golf with his wife and kids…..Waaa!!!!
More setups like this would make golf fun to watch
This has happened before. Ask tiger
Somme guys have players well, one has won, two runners-up could really have too. There is nothing to complain about.
To say there’s no element of luck in any major is just ridiculous whether it’s the weather or the ball landing in a divot or not. So if they choose to play a major where the weather changes often unpredictably it’s a mute point except for cry babies.
The golf on Saturday was absolutely riveting .
I thought while watching does anyone on the tour know how to hit the ball low when the wind is howling or am I being too critical?
I don't hear any other golfers complaining that played around the same time. Especially most of the guys that finished in the top ten. He always seems to be stomping around the course about something. Suck it up buttercup. There is no evil plot against you
I was pleased that Lowry failed and showed his true character . He hit a spotter , which stopped his ball from going into the gorse , and then instead of apologising he cursed the man he hit !
Majors should ALWAYS be an extreme test.
I get both sides for sure. Pros hitting driver to par 3s and driver driver on a hole is a bit nuts. However, if the tees were moved up and the wind didn’t end up being crazy, people would have complained it wasn’t enough of a challenge. You can’t win. I will say 8 iron vs a 3 wood is pretty outrageous! Fun to watch from my couch though!
This is the unfair side of golf in the U.K. especially place like Scotland. It can’t be fair but that’s golf I guess.
Shane lowry went on full tilt after the Postage Stamp on Saturday, we all saw it. These guys are supposed to be able to handle any course or weather conditions as the best of the best should. Zander was the best player on Saturday in the same weather as lowry and Scheffler et al and then brushed them all on Sunday. Best tournament and test in golf where the best overall player wins.
Oh dear, the conditions were not perfect how sad.
Yes I play and there is always an element of luck with the weather and course conditions that can affect a game. Any of the players in the Open could equally had weather luck on any day they stepped onto the course. I still think it was one of the best comps I've watched for years because of the huge challenge it was for everyone.
"This hole situation" no pun intended
