  1. Looking forward to this Rasta segment; he's kind of a mysterious yet open character who as I see it paved the way for all the 'lifestyle' surfers that followed (N. Florence, Gravy, Obrien, Von Rupp…and the ones I don't know). Seems like Rasta had/has a real identity apart from the commercial machine. I'll give him a lot of slack for the 'save the whales/mermaid are real' stuff just because he's kept it real, imo.

  2. Backing Bassy's call about riding a ten-foot log at Malibu as performance surfing. Riding a traditional log well is extremely difficult and one of surfing's most technical endeavors. With surfing camps as polarized as they are, the most slept on fact on this topic is how much this actually improves shortboard technique. Then there is the fun factor and days per year of engaging conditions for the ride everything enthusiast. So much to love (or hate).

  3. Rasta made a comment one time that he only really has one turn, feeling insecure about his surfing.
I don't know anyone who doesn't love his surfing especially in big reef waves.
Would love to have his talent.

  4. Totally with Scott on the high performance argument around surfing different boards.

I think of it this way: On a given day with given conditions there is probably an ideal (style of) board to use. Then it’s about who is able to ride this board to the highest level. In a way that person will be the highest performance surfer that day.

So many days it will be John John on a more standard board, but other days it will be Mikey Feb, Torren, Rasta or Bryce Young, etc. on some different craft.

Or like Scott says, whoever shows the highest performance on a longboard, if that’s what the conditions dictate.
