Brian Harman on The Open win, celebrations, what it means & more

Brian Harman joined Garrett Johnston to talk about his Open win, celebrations, what it means & more

got to imag everything tastes sweeter right out of that thing yeah man you know they designed it for a decanter and we we’ve had some nice mine out of it it’s been a um it’s been a lot of fun to hang on to it for a little while where are some of the coolest things you’ve done with it what places you’ve taken it or events yeah I got to take it on the field during the Georgia Old Miss game that was really cool uh took it up to Augusta National for a weekend um we’ve had we’ve had a big time with it’s been a lot of fun yeah well I think about your Open Championship record obviously Miss cut initially had a few n Cuts uh 2014 was your first open didn’t play tro I’m curious like what clicked for you in these last 3 years at the open I was missing Cuts but I was playing okay like I wasn’t it wasn’t like I was you know shooting 80 I was missing the cut by a shot every year and I think I finally got the mix right where I got over there early played the Scottish got a little more used to the weather a little more used to the you know just get letting my body adjust and and uh that’s been a really good recipe the last couple years before your open win you had two wins and 340 starts PG tour I’m curious um did you feel under underachieved at that point like was there any kind of tinge of regret looking at things yeah no no regrets but yeah always felt like I had something else um but certainly getting to the point of uh you know frustration not not winning tournaments having plenty of top 10 and chances to win just not finishing the job and it was really nice to have a week where it was kind of like a wire to wire played really well and got it done speaking of wire to wire the manner in which you won I mean Friday afternoon you just went out there and got a hold of by the neck of of the tournament did were you surprised at all by that performance or by some of that play um not necessarily surprised like like pleasantly surprised I you know obviously all of us out here we feel like we’re capable of of great things and um you know did I expect to have a five shot lead Friday afternoon at the open no I did not but I tried to adjust and and just manage my expectations and and try to stay as present as I could yeah how long did it take for the live folks to reach out to you I’d imagine you know they went after a lot of major Champions that year and at least show interest right yeah there’s there’s interest there uh from from their part for a minute but I love the PJ tour I’m I’m I’m really happy where I am and uh so I I haven’t really given it much thought yeah well it’s interesting I think about um cam Smith when he won it the year before you did he called it more of a relief than um you know than just a big win it was that was kind of emotionally how he felt how do you kind of look at at your win yeah i’ I felt that way with uh my other two wins it’s like you work work work and then you win and it’s like ah finally uh that one was more like a like man I’m I’m motivated to to try and keep this going and and and see if I can maybe feel this again interesting and the nickname I know a lot of people got into hunting there at the time we kind of laugh about it now but the nickname The Butcher of holy lake is that a name at all that you care to have repeated or do you think it’s just over the top overblown by the UK folks I think the you know some of the tab boids got a hold of that and they thought it would really bother me cuz I said that I you know butchered the animals that that we kill them and uh but for me I was like I saw I’m like that’s awesome so so uh my wife when you know we threw a big party uh in September when the year was over and it was a Brian the butcher themed party so we’ve kind of taken it and run with it did she dress anything up did she have like outfits at all yeah we had t-shirts and Koozies so yeah I appreciate the the tab boys for for coining that name it’s been a lot of fun yeah you were 200 to one going into the open last year uh what odds you know if you throw a number out there what odds do you think you should be for this year better than 200 to one I’d say I have no idea I don’t I don’t look at that very much yeah are you a better player now where here we are in March of 2024 than you were back in July or how do you assess things well uh you know form form is temporary it comes and goes you I’m trying to get myself into the the kind of form where I’m capable of doing something like that but at least now I know that I am capable of it like that’s a fact like if I if the the right things go my way then you know I can be a problem what is your experience I know you missed 2016 at TR what’s your experience overall at TR have you played it at all do you have any assessment of it no I haven’t played it I watched a little bit on TV I think last time it was there the weather was really bad so um I might go back and watch a little film and and and and see what’s happening everything over there but I’ll be excited to get over there as early as I can and check it out yeah and last couple things rer cup related I know you you played so well there with Max those kind of memories I mean those are going to stick with you for a while right like what what kinds of what story would stick out uh that you tell your grandkids you know 25 years from now yeah we Maxton had such a great Saturday there and you know we get done with our second match on Saturday we’ve we’ve gone two and 0 and we almost simultaneously was were just like wow what an incredible day like like him and I we’ll never forget that day and it didn’t turn out the way we wanted to wish we had a couple more days to get after him but uh incredible experience and New York um how much of a goal is that for you how much passion do you have to really rejoin that team be part of that team R yeah so you know I had the some heckling at the at the open and then they were pretty hard on us there at the uh the Ryder Cup so I would love the opportunity to play on some home soil and and and have the crab behind me as opposed to the other way well Brian appreciate your time thanks for joining again you got it man take care see you
