Course Management Strategy Using Decade Golf

If you want to lower your golf scores then this video is for you. I explain course management strategies using Decade Golf, create by Scott Fawcett, to help you plan your shots to give yourself the best opportunity to shoot lower scores. In this video I focus on the tee shots, which are arguable the most important as they are your first shot on every hole.

By understanding your shot patterns, the area which you hit each club on average, you can plan your way around any course. This doesn’t mean every shot will go as planned but using the correct club at the right time increases your chances of getting a lower score on each hole.

Watch the video as explain the method and demonstrate strategies for different types of holes depending on the length, fairway and hazards on each hole.

in this video series I’m going to introduce course management principles I’m going to go through key decision-making methods that guaranteed to lower your scores throughout these videos I’m going to be referring to something called decade golf that has been created by someone called Scott foret that has completely changed how golfers of all levels even at the top view course management to get started I’m going to talk you through how you can make better decisions from the te that is guaranteed to lower your scores regardless of your playing level the t- shot is probably the most important shot in all of golf as it’s the first shot on each hole having a clear strategy of which club to take and being able to do this reliably Under Pressure gives you the best chance of the lowest score on that hole the first thing you need to understand though is something called a shot pattern in short a shot pattern which is individual to you is the distance you hit the ball on average both long to short so I.E front to back and left to right this creates a circular motion that would be classed as a shot pattern and can be set to each individual Club this is something you can work out for yourself by using a radar some something like trackman or even the top Tracer or it’s something you can do with your golf coach once you understand your rough dispersion Zone you can then make better decisions off the tea so for example on this second hole we can see they’ve got two deep bunkers which are at least a on shot penalty Hazard that we want to avoid at all costs now depending on how far you actually hit the ball we determine how you play this hole but let’s take into account we want to completely remove the the bunkers but we can’t actually carry them now in order to do that we need a 50 yard dispersion window at 215 yards so if I was to play a t-shot and I was to choose my middle Target line that I know is a 50 yard window and I only hit it maximum of 25 yards I’m going to leave myself roughly 185 yard shot into the middle of the green so this hole automatically becomes very difficult because of where the hazards are but also how far I’m actually hitting the ball whereas if I choose a different strategy and I can hit it at 280 yards what actually happens on this particular hole is I’ve got a bigger window so I’ve got a 70 yard dispersion window so more room for error and if I keep it in that window I’ve only got 120 yards to the middle of the green so with the second strategy option naturally I’m going to be able to gain more off the te by being able to play that now this purely depends as I say on how far you actually can hit the golf ball but what a lot of players will do even if they can’t carry the bunker they’ll still choose their longest Club in the bag this then means they’re aiming for a very very small Target probably 25 yards of the Fairway but their dispersion shot pattern is much wider than that which means on average they’re going to hit a lot of shots into those bunkers meaning they’re going to have to chip out sidewards they’re going to get stuck in there and they’re essentially bringing in doubles triples and more just by poor decision making so I’m going to go through this hole with the two different strategies and we’re going to see how that plays out so for me to hit 215 yards I’m not just trying to carry the ball there I’m taking into account the conditions the wind how I’m feeling with my swing to a certain degree and what I’ve selected is a six IR I’m going to aim to roughly carry this about 200 yards we’re allow allowing for at least 15 yards a run second to that because I’ve looked at a 50 yard dispersion which obviously for the club I’m hitting would be a little bit tighter at least probably 30 yards I’m not just going to aim for the center of the Fairway because if I aim for the center of this Fairway for what we can see and I pull it slightly I’m bringing that bunker into play so I’m aiming actually for the center of that shot pattern which for me based on what we’ve calculated is just on the inside of that right bunker so that’s a really good example of the shot pattern we were talking about there because I’ve actually missed my center of my target probably by at least 15 yards there because I’ve really pulled that but because of my aim and my course management I’m banging the middle of the Fairway okay so going to shot one where I calculated 25 yards off the T I’ve successfully hit my zone I didn’t hit that particularly great so I’ve probably lost 10 yards but that’s normal within the long to short part of the shot pattern and to a middle flag I’ve left myself 195 yards now obviously that is a long way into a par 4 but what you’ve got to calculate and take into account is this is an extremely tough t-shot and overall an extremely tough par 4 so making a bogy here is never actually a big deal it means though by taking out these bunkers which are true hazards which are at least a onot penalty because of how deep they are is actually mean that I’ve probably taken out the six sevens and Eights because I’ve essentially removed the danger off the tea so for the second strategy I’m hitting a driver so that’s bigger dispersion window but we know that’s okay based on the assessment but we also know that because of that bigger dispersion window in the size of the Fairway some shots I hit within my shop pan are going to end up in the roof but that’s important to remember that’s okay because I’m only going to have roughly 120 yards to the green so I’m going to take that challenge on same Target as I had with the iron which is not down the dead center of the fair W it’s slightly right so again I’ve slightly pulled that but because of where I’ve aimed and I’ve got a little bit of fade and that’s within my shot pattern from a solid hit I’ll be dead center of the Fairway and have a maximum of 120 yards in so with that t-shot because it’s a a little bit downwind and I probably in some ways didn’t need to hit a full-on driver I’ve actually gained nearly 0.4 shots off the tea against my handicap so by actually hitting this where I have I’ve now only left myself an 80 yard shot to an extremely tough Par Four now an 80 yard shot regardless of playing level is much easier to hit that closer than if I was back at 190 and that’s an example where length off the T can play play a significant Advantage but only if it’s utilized correctly so as I move on to the third hole t-shot this is a completely different test although it’s just as tough a hole the actual t- shot’s much easier what we know with with it being a blind shot you can’t always see the center of your target so this is why mapping out the course as we talk about is so effective but the max we can really hit this until we bring in a a severe bunker into plays about 255 yards but that’s at a 70 yard dispersion if we decrease that dispersion to 50 yards we can go up to more like 270 this is just a hole where getting the ball in play with the max yardage is the most effective strategy so there’s no real two ways of playing this for majority of go for this will be the longest Club in their bag I’m going to use a free wood and I’m going to I know my target based on my assessment is going to be roughly at the path and I’ve got to commit to that line so that t- shot for me was actually a really poor swing and a poor hit but this really emphasizes the point we’re trying to get across I’ve actually just head ended up in the Heather so roughly only about five yards away from being perfect and if it actually hit the Fairway naturally I would have gained another 30 yards only had about 140 yards to the flag but the reason this is important is because the dispersion window I assessed it showed that the chances are with the widest parts of the shot pattern I’m going to hit either side just go into the hether with certain shots that doesn’t mean it’s the wrong strategy because what I could do is utilize a club that gives me a tighter dispersion automatically I’m going to have a much much longer shot into an already long hole and difficult approach shot so just because you’re gonna get yourself more in play doesn’t always mean that’s the right strategy so here on whole form this is a great example of how different T positions do not actually always change the course strategy from the back te the furthest I can really hit the ball is 250 yards because there’s a fairway bunker that is again a full Hazard a full penalty shot almost see some of these these bunkers as actually water or something similar so 250 yards is the window I’m looking for which is still a long way but on top of that I’ve only got really a 60 yard window left or right of that is thick he so this is one of those t- shots that just requires a really good committed swing but it’s also one of those holes that we know that if we’re not hitting the Fairway and we’re not g gaining plenty of distance from the te there’s a strong possibility that we’re going to make at least a five but from this T and how difficult the hole is with the right hazards we’ve almost got to look at this as a par 4.5 so it’s not obviously a par five but it’s too difficult to call it just a basic Par Four and when you have that strategy in mind it helps you be a bit more committed to the correct decision whereas if I move forward a t onto the yellows by 40 yards it turns out the actual strategy is still the exact same I’m still trying to hit it short of that bunker going over that bunker is a big carry but it also then brings in other bunkers and not a big area to hit the Fairway so regardless of the T position we’re still trying to get to the same spot orbe we’re going to have to hit different clubs whereas a lot of different holes and different T positions can can mean you can play certain holes a lot more aggressive not on this course we’re not just aiming dead for the center of the Fairway we’re having a clear Target line a clear start line with where we want that ball to start because we know even if it moves off that middle that’s still within the shot pattern and now we just got to be committed and just hit a good golf shot so here I’ve hit a perfect t-shot I’ve virtually hit my target line but it’s an example is we’re only 10 yards away from being in the roof and if we’re in that roof we’re struggling to get to the green whereas if we try to get any more aggressive and we’re in the bunker we’ll chipping out sidewards so this is just a really tough t-shot if we go further back on the hole the target is no wider and it’s no easier to hit so this is again that 4.5 hole we have to play each t- shot based on what your shot pattern is based on where the hazards are based on how far you can actually hit it off the tee and get away with it not always just looking can we hit the center of the Fairway and classing that as a good shot so now you know how to make more reliable and better decisions off the te that is guaranteed to lower your scoring don’t forget to comment below and let me know which part of your game you struggle with the most and how this can help you

  1. Looking forward to trying out this strategy, planning ahead to take those bunkers out of play will save lots of stress and shots!

  2. This video is a great reminder of thinking strategy. I am definitely guilty of hitting my driver on holes where I have no chance of carrying the bunkers. I will try playing to avoid them next time I play. Should be good for short game practice !

  3. I had a Course Strategy Session with Sam last week, 9 holes around The Bracken at Woodhall Spa. He’d recommended Shot Pattern app and I trust his judgement so had signed up the night before. The session itself was excellent, Sam really knows his stuff and explains it so well. Shot Pattern app visually supported what he was saying in terms of shot choice and target selection on each hole. He also gave so much great advice on other variables like lie and conditions and avoiding the big misses.
I’ve used the app twice on my home course since and seen strokes gained jump up already! It’s changed my understanding of how to play the game. Inputting the round afterwards is easy and it’s mapped for the Red tees too! I have struggled for years with when or when not to use Driver and making these more informed decisions has given me the confidence I need to make the right choice and execute the shot.
I can’t recommend a Course Strategy Session with Sam enough and the app is the best I’ve used by far. So much excellent data! Sam will be swimming in it 🤣. I will report the stats so that he has a much better understanding of what goes wrong on the course so what needs work. Thanks guys 🙏
