hey guys it’s Michael welcome back to scratch Golf Academy today we’re going to be talking about a really important topic that’s how to keep the left arm or lead arm straight in your swing I’m going to show you a great drill that one of the best players in the world does let’s get right into it so first of all why do we want to keep the left arm straight As we take the club back to the top well if you take a look here if I’m bending this arm one look how much width we are losing in terms of our swing from here to here when we get super close to our body we can only generate so much power from here down to the ball whereas if we get more extended now we have more width more time for that club to produce lag and get down to the ball to produce that more power also the second point is consistency if we have a bent left arm here now we are relying on really only timing to perfectly straighten this arm down at impact to then produce a consistent shot so it’s pretty clear that you want to have a relatively straight arm at the top of your swing and pretty much holding that position as you come down through the ball let’s talk about a really really great drill that’s going to help you out with this so imagine you’re on the ice uh playing some hockey right I want you to hold the club almost like a hockey stick your lead hand for me it’s my left hand is going to grip the top of the club here and then your uh Trail hand my right hand is going to grip pretty much half on the bottom of the grip half on the shaft of the club now I want you to take a back swing holding the club like this couple points here one feel that left arm stay straight two feel that trail armpit and elbow stay nice and close to your body so what that’s going to look like is where you’re here bringing it to the top left arm stays straight see how that club is nice and vertical in this position and that is a fantastic position to be in at the top of your swing it really allows you to feel some more width and depth in your swing and get in that great position to produce a nice consistent shot so let me show you that again and this is going to really help you hinge that club up as well so you’re here holding it like a hockey stick bringing it back feeling that left arms stay nice and straight we’re here that right elbow is nice and close to your body and here you go show you from this angle here holding it like a hockey stick a little spacing there here there and that’s pretty much the gist of the drill now you’re not going to hit any balls with this but it’s going to allow you to over exaggerate this feel right which I talk about all the time OV exaggerating the feel to produce it into your actual swing you need to feel something more significant than that than is actually happening to make a significant change in your swing so we’ll do this in slow motion here I like to do four or five reps so we’re getting here nice split hand grip get into this position here pause feel what this feels like keeping that left arm straight really sink that in and now slow motion turn it get that out in front of you and just feel it through it’s like you’re doing a slap shot in hockey you’re here bang through the puck through the ball onto your front side and that’s really going to allow you to feel that now let’s talk about you know when you transition into a normal ball what is that going to feel like so instead of a split hand grip let’s hold the club normally now still feel that same feeling you felt with that split hand grip that left arm staying straight here now that is a great position at the top of our swing feel that sink that in especially with your hands close together come through keeping that left arm straight turn what we can do is get to the top of our swing here feel that left arm straight pause and now just come through slow motion feel it feel it feel it and through the next step to the drill is bring it to the top pause punch shot like you’re getting out of some trees hold off your finish feeling those feels again can’t stress enough you have to OV exaggerate it it has to be a little bit uncomfortable if it doesn’t feel like oh wow this is something I’ve never felt before then you’re probably not doing it right so make sure you’re double-checking look in a mirror take a video on your phone that you’re doing it correctly and it’s going to really help you out when you get up to full speed right really press that really feel like you’re pressing this away but also keeping your armpits and elbows nice and close to your body right pressing that left arm away turning through so this is what it’s going to look like in full speed I’m going to show you kind of a slow motion back swing here take a look here left arm staying straight and through that was a nicely struck shot nice and flighted and and hopefully once you implement this into your actual swing you’ll see a lot more consistency your dispersion of Misses left and right won’t be quite as wide and overall you’ll be a happier golfer right you want to get better at this game it’s hard give that drill a try you can do it with your driver as well highly recommend that give that a try subscribe to the channel ton of free golf stuff for you guys so do that check out my stuff over on that golf grind see you guys out here real soon he [Music] [Applause]
