full southern region of Andalusia right here at the iconic real club valderama for the second consecutive year the fans showed up and showed out all here to see Spaniard Superstars Sergio Garcia and John Ram but Dean burer ended the day tied on the top of the individual leaderboard and Stinger GC finished at the top of the team leaderboard it’s a takeover ladies and gentlemen we’re here to talk about that and more welcome to Club 54 post round show I’m your host Christian Crosby and joining me is your favorite live golf analyst Dom Boule what’s up Dom not much Christian just love your enthusiasm oh you got to love it D and The champ is here ladies and gentlemen International series Morocco champ amongst many other things Ben Campbell thanks so much for joining us on the show man you got a big smile on your face right now you got to be feeling good huh yeah no it was great uh after last week and uh yeah no took a lot away from it so now thanks for having me on now we’re going to talk more about that in a second first DME you had an incredible day today uh you’ve been on your feet for quite some time you followed Phil nichelson uh you also followed Bryson Des Shambo take us through the day today the wind is doing what it does best today you know what this is such a difficult Golf Course without the wind but today was blowing 30 40 mph gusting up to you have to be so exact on this golf course off the te and on the to your second shots your approach shots how can you be exact in these conditions and then the greens are drying out really quickly so everyone’s missing a lot of greens it was so hard to get it up and down it was so fast around the edges I mean Ben you played a practice round here but it was calm then it’s a hard golf course but you can’t imagine how hard it is out there can you yeah and I think you know as you say as soon as you missed the green some of those lies you were getting around the rough that you know the grass that really thick blade you can’t get any spin on it and um yeah it uh it looked very tricky out there that was for sure just watching guys how they were trying to judge the wind and you get that wrong and you missed the green and it’s so easy to make a bogey yeah well Dom let’s start with Phil Michelson first you followed today as we said let’s put some highlights on the screen take us through what happened today Dom here’s Phil Mickelson in day one he yeah well I didn’t join him to the sixth hole but uh this was Phil on the fourth and he made a lot of good shots today got a lot of nice up and downs he’s got this old putter back the old blade putter the trusty one he won so many tournaments with and he looks really good over it and this was a highlight second shot on 11 the par five playing downwind plated out of the off to run it through Through The Fringe and pretty much Stone dead for an eagle they hit a couple of Thum up there’s a Swagger from Phil nichelson himself uh thoughts on Phil from you Ben I would love to hear your Take On The One and Only Phil Mickelson yeah you know I think the one thing that surprised me being out here this year is still just how hard he works he you can see why he’s been such a great player and still is such a great player and uh you know even today I saw pH uh struggling hiding you know Phil struggling around the greens you know it’s tough and um there was a few times you know him taking putter off those uh Just Around The Fringe here they’ve cut it so fine it’s so tough to chip off and you you saw a lot of guys taking putter just off the green today and um yeah it wasn’t easy now Dom you also follow Bryson to Shambo man of the people seemed to have his energy back today uh maybe wasn’t the day he was looking for obviously but tell us what you saw well he was going well really until the 17th thought we got a little lucky flew his third shot into the back bunker he was in a downhill lie on that tough par five and then he knocked it into the water but you know Bryson hits it so high probably the highest Apex of any player on the uh on the league but he hit a lot of knockdowns today lower than I’ve ever seen him hit it so it’s great to see that’s great preparation for next week because you know the wind’s going to pick up uh be up a few days to roll true but the greens are so fast especially downwind I mean they must be running 15 16 downhill downwind it is scary you need to have so much touch around these greens here on that uh 17th hole with Bryson what what what happened there well he drove it into the left trees he punched it out and then he caught a little bit of a fly with his third into the back bunker problem was he was on a downhill line and then he just didn’t he just carried it too far and that’s what happens on 17 we’ve seen it hundreds of times on TV on this 17th hole here at valder arm boom wet got a drop on the other side made a good s to be honest with you as you’re getting ready uh to prepare for your next day both of you are professionals what do you do to plan for this wind I better ask this guy yeah I think you know they’ll be out here on the on the driving range especially tomorrow morning if they’re not out here this evening just just working on really controlling that ball flight um you know I I watched some Richard Bland today and you watch him and he can really flight the ball well he hit some really good iron shots out there but I think you know there’s going to be guys spending some time around that chiping green just trying to get a bit more used to how that rough’s reacting um but I think the one thing you don’t see on TV is just how slopy some of these greens are and you miss it in the wrong spot out here unfortunately there’s not much you can do you know a good chip might be 10 ft all right well let’s take a look at the individual standings from day one here in valderama take us through a d as you look at this Dean burster at number number one today finishing five under par Danny Lee having a great day and Eugenio chakara finishing at three da when you look at this leaderboard what do you think 5 under how on Earth did he shoot that I mean I said earli in the round when the wind was this strong on the second third hole I said I think 69 might lead at the end of the day I mean five on the par is incredible and Danny Lee great to see Danny playing well again fantastic got to love that all right let’s talk a little bit about this International series we have the champ standing with us the main man that did his thing in Morocco first and foremost congratulations to you uh why don’t you just take us back to that and take us through your your final round in marocco yeah no it was um I I sort of didn’t have my best game that day and um you know I didn’t have the dream start I went the first three rounds without making a bogey and then uh birdi uh sorry bogied my uh first and second hole and uh yeah I knew it wasn’t sort of going to be easy we had a little bit of a breeze nothing quite like this and it’s a it’s a tough golf course and uh yeah I just really stuck in stuck in there and uh cut running hot near the end and uh yeah there are some of your highlights from that day just talk us through it as you see them here I think that’s the PA three nth right that was a great did you hit it right on the pin I don’t think many shots would have been right on the pin that day Ben might have not quite been aiming there but uh no it was good birdie they got me back on track after a couple of bogeys and uh yeah there was Eagle on 17 which which yeah got me right into it you played against guys like John Catlin you had that incredible playoff uh just talk about the competition K also another live guy who was there he competed against how was it compeed against those two yeah no it’s it’s been amazing especially this year having a lot of the LI guys out um playing the international series and um yeah John klin’s been on an amazing run so um yeah he I I knew he wasn’t going to sort of go any we on that Sunday and uh and I knew I’d have to go out and play well so to sort of have that finish I did hole in the part on 17 and uh and then biring 18 um yeah was was amazing all right well let’s take a look at the individual standings of the international series here Dom I would love to hear your thoughts on this but as we pull this up uh Ben just tell me how motivated you are to bump yourself up to that number one spot as you look at this leaderboard right now yeah I think you know it’s been amazing being out here and and spending time uh at all these love events and it’s uh yeah definitely gr the fire to to want to be out here full time and and and yeah I think it’s amazing opportunity um you know we’re we’ve got I think six events left on the international series and uh you know there’s so much to play for so really looking forward to the end of the year I’m wishing you the best of luck Don what do you think when you look at this actually I think we still got seven left Morocco is a third right so I mean do you feel if you can get one more win in the next seven up out of the next seven you could secure this Ben yeah I think you know how how well John’s playing you know I think you you know I’ve always thought if I could win twice more um that’s sort of the goal you know definitely and um it’s yeah there there’s a lot to play for and I think the the good thing for me there’s a there’s a lot of the courses that I like still to to play um you know guars like this where it’s really windy I grew up playing in the wind a lot um obviously really like Hong Kong um you know and I I think England should really suit my game as well so um yeah the these weeks you know when you when you’re reserved for this has haven’t always been the worst you spent a lot of time some great practice facilities and just being around the guys is I think you know given me a lot of confidence on of I’ve definitely learned some things but also I feel like you know it just gives you that confidence to to sort of push on and and you know that you’re not far away from from playing views all the little things that you can see the different things that andalia has to offer uh for me as a as a spaner is uh is always always made me make me feel very [Music] proud it’s one of my favorite ones we play all year so you know I’m excited to be here this week this place is uh is so special [Music] [Music] [Music] and Stinger GC joining us after his absolutely phenomenal day congrats on that by the way Dean burster is in the house ladies and gentlemen and joining us your favorite live golf analyst J F your favorite my favorite I think I’m Jerry and I share a couple beers yes once in a while what the heck course were you playing today uh I don’t know it’s brutal out there it is brutal I don’t know it was I just made everything I looked at Jerry you have those days I suppose this was one of those days for me so I relish it you know I really enjoyed it there had to be a whole lot more than that though yeah I mean you every shot out there requires Precision oh yeah oh yeah it’s um I mean this is a tough golf course and with the rough the way they’ve kind of brushed the rough back away from the greens chipping is tough so you’ve got to hit a ton of greens I managed to do that and then on top of that just make a whole lot of putts I mean that’s a good recipe for success is it the type of course where at the end of the day you might be a little more emotionally tired than another course because of the stress level I was telling my wife when I walked off the course I said I’m so tired that felt like honestly that felt like a major championship r a golf that’s how tough it was it was prep the greens some of the greens I mean they better go and water them now otherwise they could possibly lose some of them yeah Dean I know you’re a humble guy but we’re going to show some highlights for today and I want you to talk your talk Dean all right take us through it ladies and gentlemen this is Dean burm day one valderama here we go all right let’s see we’re going to start at number 10 with a birdy effort yeah this was quite a smelly put um that’s what quite a smelly putt I had more smelly yeah two yards a break on this downhill I think if it missed the hole he’s probably 6 ft by easy and then yeah 11 great chip I mean went for the high flop because I didn’t know how it was going to come out and then yeah rolled out to a foot which those ones are nice I’ll take that very much so yeah 15 do you have another chance with birdie yeah 15 had a long one hit a great seven iron into you know 45 ft and like I said I hold the W so he has one of those one one of only two birdies on that hole today 17 the par five yeah 17 another one such a hot hole today in and up the ride it that’s a smelly putt too that smelly Putt and just perfect perfect speed um yeah and then five five was cool oh this is four a yeah Paul was I mean again another pop five into the rid so tough and then yeah this one to finish on the last was was such a great fight just kind of crept in the front edge and boom boom thank you man you may Cas you didn’t notice you really did make all mys are PS none of them were about go shots now it was it was a big day for The Stingers as well your teammate Louis us tasin had uh himself a great day as well um just talk about how it is being his teammate first and foremost being his teammate’s tough man it’s hard it’s hard to be around him I mean he’s infectious what can I say he’s a look at him he’s just look at this a beautiful specimen of a human being right there he is he’s our cat I’m just saying this because I need my contract up for Renewal but he’s still the only only singer to have yet win yeah he’s going to win though he’s playing some great stuff that was his third and number four and then next shot you’ll see is the six tshot oh nice it’s still one of the best swings in golf isn’t it wow look at the bounce on beautiful I have to give credit to Colin BN for that club would been easy yeah no it couldn’t have been you guys and it was a lot of guess work out there but you guys had the lead team-wise you had two players under par there were seven of the 13 teams who didn’t have a single player not shoot overpar that’s how tough it was today wow that is yeah it was tough today was today some of the toughest golf you’ll see anyway it didn’t matter you know balama is tough when there’s no wind um anytime we get out here it’s I mean you stand on these tees you kind of get a little claustrophobia going and you know when you’ve got that kind of gusting all over the place it becomes you know it becomes a little bit of luck and and a lot of good putts well you got probably the best golf swing in all the world on your team in Louis days and you got you got a team known for being ball Strikers you guys are gritty you’re a gritty team you get it done in all sorts of ways you have a lot of power but do you think this course favors your style of play as a team I think so um you know we we came here last year I think Louie Brandon and sha had never played here before and i’ played here a ton um and yeah they they were all I think they got hit by a little bit of that claustrophobia last year but this year we came here and everyone seemed in a better frame of mind because they knew what to expect and um Lou is probably one of the straightest drivers of the golf ball you’ll ever see and when you’ve got that in your in Your Arsenal and Sha’s iron play and ball striking and Brandon’s you know tenacity and grit like you said it’s you know I feel like we can we can get something done so hopefully we got two more good days ahead of us now Dean you know how it goes on the post round show we do this thing called form check where we have the fans submit their swing you’re great at it so we want you to be as brutally honest as possible F submitted them here they are on the screen de take us very straight arm okay interesting pre-shot okay little over that is got uh left to right all over it that ball shape is left to right please aim left that’s all I can say my always says if I’m hitting it right aim left it’s very simple all right that’s pretty good that’s a good check right there I like that one here’s another oh man says roast away yeah that was kind of kind of small to see I don’t know if that’s my coach standing there at 4′ three or is I wow Dean you’re on fire right now keep it coming it’s great all right let’s do it another here we go all right this is the last one Dean do your best here we’ll close it to the screen wow I like that who’s that anzo o nice this has got gas on her this kid’s got some oh yeah he’s got power that’s a Pinehurst too 12 years old yeah just keep hitting it bro just keep hitting it as hard as you can you’ll find it as long as it’s for you well personally I haven’t had the best record here but as a pro I haven’t had the chance to come back and play in Spain a lot yeah so there’s been a few times where I come later on the year and you know the crowd really shows it so there’s been a lot of times where there’s like you know youth schools and and kids that come and one year when I missed the cut and there was a group of 30 of them that just came and gave me a hug and that’s one of the best moments I’ve ever had yeah I I saw a fantastic photo of you as a kid I think you’re in your early teens yeah that was getting autograph from I believe it was Henrik Stenson it is Henrik yeah so well no we we’ve talked about it cuz that was my first ever Pro event I ever got to witness first shot I ever saw alive was Thomas Bjorn who ended up being my R Cup captain Justin Rose was the winner who ended up being my first R cup partner Paul Casey utter resigned that shirt so four people I ended up sharing the stage with that my first ever ride cut were part of that day right which is crazy to think about you should you should frame it take a picture with him and then do like a side by side you know I think we should repeat a few of those pictures you should oh man that looked like a whole lot of fun and obviously we have suan here joining us we’re going to talk a little bit of John ROM and iio Garcia and just a few but you do such a wonderful job with the Hang Time Su oh aren’t you nice Christian good to see you too buddy yeah I know and you’re not like Jerry clearly joining us is suan hang Jerry folz is sticking around here you got to follow John ROM Sergio Garcia and what a day you had today suan oh yeah I mean anytime you get to spend time with John ROM is is phenomenal and the input that he gave me was fantastic but he you know he started off pretty good and then he then went far over in his last seven holes wasn’t quite the finish that he wanted but set it out really well and looked really promising this is his Birdie on Fifth didn’t feel like he did very much wrong out there Jerry you know it just felt like he got a little unlucky got a couple bad breaks and you can tell from his reaction he wasn’t really all that frustrated with his actual game because he hit some great shots well he hit a lot of Fairways and the ones he missed were very very close he felt like I mean I don’t know if you can call it misjudgment because of the Blustery conditions but certainly reacted like he felt like he left a lot out there because of some of those bad breaks I said it on the airw he almost acted like he felt the golf CS were out to get him today that’s a horrible feeling when the conditions are this tough but uh what was the difference between what he did in your view and your expert analysis I love saying that uh and what Sergio did because Sergio got it in yeah well it’s interesting because Sergio actually said to me in the post round interview that they both had the same shot on the 17th and the difference was when Rah actually hit a shot a gust of win absolutely killed his golf ball and there’s just nothing you can do about it and making a double in a par five is always something that will drive a professional absolutely insane especially if you didn’t really hit a bad shot at all you can tell that he likes it yeah he said it down because I actually hit that really good and it didn’t even come close I mean I was right there the gust of win literally picked up at the Apex on this ball and there’s just nothing you can do about that yeah and it was funny because Sergio’s cadd talked him into waiting you could hear it too he talked him into waiting even though Sergio was going to play out of turn because Adam Hay was back raking the Fairway buer still and CAD said no you know what let’s just wait let’s just wait and it pay it paid off a little bit that you know Sergio still made bogey yeah it’s a tough call to make as well you know you kind of uh do I Rush my playing partner do I not or do I go first especially as a fellow Spaniard but uh that’s that’s that’s a difficult call there do it’s got to be fun out there watching Sergio like strategically plot his way around this course cuz he’s such an incredible and dynamic ball Striker Sergio Garcia you also got to follow around today let’s take a look at some of his highlights from today suan take us through it as we pull these clips up what a day for Sergio Garcia he said this is his favorite course to play on and down in the world I mean Jerry we spoke about this he’s played this golf course in professional events 15 times and out of those 15 he com in what top 10 14 14 times he’s won three times obviously here’s the one that swirls home that was pretty awesome you were up in the green I was up on the green I could even hear it spinning around the cup yeah and this we were debating what he was going to do here what an amazing shot yeah this was a phenomenal shot I mean it’s just a guy like Sergio and you talked about it in the podcast this week about how this golf course really suits his game even the analytics said that right all the data says I mean Sergio was one of the top six players in every key data point every key statistical point we had except for putting and what is interesting and we talked about it on the broadcast today is he doesn’t make more putts from from 10 to 20 feet than he does from Two and a Half to 5 feet but statistically he is Miles better compared to the field than he is from the shorter the the Kickin range almost I know I mean we’ve seen throughout the season how many he’s missed inside that range so but a really really solid round I I mean to to be on the par what seven players today are under par two even par I mean that’s impressive that is very did make some key six seven Footers today too A lot of them yeah it was pretty fun to watch another guy I want to bring up Danny Lee had a great day we’re going to pull some highlights up Jerry as you watched him today what did you see how did why was his day so good here with all this wind going on well you know a couple good PR breaks and a couple of good puts you get you know something like this to to drop or get up there stress free he gets that one to drop at 12 his second then his second into the into number five you get a couple of good breaks which John Rob didn’t get today and then you make a few putts and it’s different it’s a difference of Night and Day when conditions are this difficult they talk about the the fine line between a birdie and a bogey on this course normally you talk about a game of inches meaning the difference of one shot here sometimes it can mean the difference of two just how precise you have to be on that approach into the green and uh he’s also an extremely streaky player extremely streaky he hadn’t had a good streak yet this year wow by the way he was on the Range just a moments ago I think he only just left I know he was grinding in out there a lot of guys over there right now by the way which I love to see but they’re hitting into a left to right right-handed golfer I mean the that almost is counterproductive sometimes yeah well we’re we’re going to talk a little bit about day two but first we got to toss over to the one and only Rachel Drummond Rachel she’s got something special what’s going on Rachel have your strike Mark don’t know hello gonzala I’m too busy looking at your strike mark on your shs and clubs I’m very excited today gonzalo’s joined me you’ve won seven times on the DP World Tour and you’re a member here at valderama there’s no one better to talk to us about the course today how tough has it played well as as I said on the pre-show this morning I mean it’s this wind makes this course very tough I mean not only because of the gust which were I think at times up to maybe 40 K an hour but also because it firms up the green so much I mean it makes PN and and and just holding the ball of the greens especially not on the fway makes it so hard and we can fill the win now now par is a good score and that’s not very common out here talk to us about that hey I’ll take I’ll take if if if conditions like this I’ll take level par uh any time of the any time of the day but yeah that’s that’s the feel every time you play balderama it’s it’s always it’s always um a US Open field to it you know if parts are good the problem be it starts when you start with Bogies all of a sudden you want to make birdies you become too aggressive you start making a strategic mistakes and and that’s when you get the high numbers and we’ve seen a few of those as well I think that’s such a good point out here today car’s a good score don’t try and Chase it now we’re here on the 17th which last year in this tournament was actually the easiest hole um yielded 57 birdies however today different wind we’re actually where nean hit his t- shot today talk us to about the strategy of the tea well the strateg of the as for me it’s very simple just try to squeeze it somewhere in between those bunkers these guys they play a different game they hit it way longer than me and they’re even considering going in two for this on this hole which for me it’s Unthinkable on on on conditions uh like today we saw as soon as we as we got here today we saw nean hitting a lovely shot uh we saw some of the green some of the play trying to go Dustin Johnson put it in the water I would say if I was here 2 40 Ys to the green I don’t know I don’t think I have the distance to get I’m going to have to hit it so perfect anything has to go right but my advice would be get as close to the green as possible and by that I mean try and and and do your layup after the bunker if you leave yourself a long second a long third sorry I mean with this wind and this gust anything can happen with your third and the water gets very much into play so I mean if you have the distance I would try and and and get out the water out the way as soon as possible but unfortunately it’s not my case and and talk about why this hole is hard this year is it the wind is it a different direction it’s all about the wind I mean it’s all about the wind we have Wester wind which is much strides much stronger and it plays this hole into if the wind was blowing the other way around we might be seeing the players hitting probably nine or eight irons into the green but today is a different different totally different hold even the we’ve seen players hitting the B I mean anything can happen today now we saw Ram was out of position in the bunker on The Fairway which meant he had to lay up let’s have a little walk down it’s it’s all about the T-shirt as we said I mean Johan hit a lovely lovely driver which seemed to be good he just S at the very last minute it grabbed the corner of the bunker and and then you can you can be too aggressive on your layup and and that’s what happened you had to lay up short of the bunkers uh and a difficult third coming up yes and talking about the layup which we’re going to get to in a second you know what sort of number did he have was it around the 140 140 I think it was 139 140 but of course on this conditions it’s probably playing more like I would say even 160 which even I mean the the the the the hardest part about John shot and we’ll see it in a minute is that the ball was sitting on yes so he didn’t have many chances if the B is sitting is sitting on a flat L then you can maybe try and squeze a low one a low Chaser to get to that back pin because the pin at least it was it was it’s on the on the easier part there not such thing as easy here in balderama but today is probably the easiest position of all but the fact that the ball was sitting on an up slope just makes it super hard because the only way you can do is just try and hit it up and the wind’s going to get it we’ve made it g here we are we’re at where Ram had his approach shot today now now you mentioned it’s on a slightly an up slope here so you’re actually going to play some and we’re going to look at the ram shot while you’re getting set up now the pin today was on 21 five from the right talk to about that pin location and why it was so tricky for Ram that he ended up in the water Al caddy we’re showing Ram now talk us through this shop as as you can I mean as you can see sitting here in an up slope I mean 140 to the pin around 129 to make it to make it to the to the to the front edge but because there’s seven there’s seven Paces in the right that if you don’t reach the green and even if you bounce on the green and Spins back that ball is going to go in the water that’s what makes it so difficult so for me if I mean the the the normal FL from here on a on a flat light would be an N iron and I’m going to show you what happens if you hit an N iron from from an open light most surely the ball is going to go up in the air and there’s no way I’m going to reach I mean as soon as it gets above those you can see behind the grandstand uh he’s going to get it and and and and he’s going to be short and I think that’s let’s see you hit one I think that’s what we heard from R st cuz he said I struck it great yeah the up slope the spin the wind it made it tricky go on hit one see one he a lovely shot let’s see how it goes let me do what practice first oh it’s a beautiful strike well I think is going to be better than John no wonder you won seven times on the DP world that’s money that’s the club should give no you’re done right now this W come to well as I said before today the pin is long ride the water is kind of out of the way but I’m most surely that tomorrow or on Sunday the pin is going to be short left and that’s that’s that’s a beast if you have a look at this bunker I mean this is the one you have to avoid by any means you want to leave yourself like a 100 yard 100 yard shot into the wind water short I mean it’s like Bryson on steroids yes absolutely Bryson at the US opening steroid so if it was me I mean as you can see you have got a massive area here after the bunker um so I would try my layup I would always try to get it as close to the water is possible maybe it’s difficult to leave to to give yourself a birdie chance especially when the pin is short when it’s downwind but today with this wind that you can you can pitch it behind the flag and just spin it back I’m toughed about your shot I’m just seeing it now as we’re getting closer I’m as surprised as you are now valderama certainly showed its teeth today
