joining us from Lake Tahoe for the American Century classic is a classic himself let’s be honest uh he’s a Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young how are you Steve Rich I’m doing great buddy good to see you you know normally I’m I’m dazzled by your baby blues but look at that blue sky behind you man look at that brother the lake over there but uh yeah no this is a it’s a good spot right now a little hot but beautiful where have I found you are you on a are are you on a practice tea where are you we got uh Shane Victorino we got Doug Peterson there coach of the Jaguars yes I’ve heard of him d c in with Steph’s not here for the Olympics uh see you know we got a lot of people here yeah okay so um do you not hit a lot of balls before you um go out there or am I taking away warm up and get like ready to go but then you know you you asked me to take I’m gonna do it you know pH says Rich needs you man like hey I rich calls I’m here I appreciate it I appreciate it let’s be honest if I keep swinging all I do is get sweaty and I won’t help I still suck so what what’s the handicap these days you know what I’m gonna start I’m gonna start the celebrity Range tour because on the Range bro I am sweet sweet on the Range the C that’s the okay very good you’re the celebrity Range tour I like it very good okay um so all right let me who are you playing with today who’s in the group with Doug Peterson and great Jim McMahon oh who is dragging his foot around he still got it I thought he’d he thought he’d lose his foot and he he still he’s still doing it he’s gonna he’s not a cane but he’s played every year here for 31 years I want to say he’s never missed 35 years and uh so he’s just going to drag his foot around and see if he can finish so there a warrior so when did you meet him for the first time in college when he was gim like wearing the Rosel the Roselle gear and sweatband in com I was the yeah know BYU I was a freshman he was a Junior and his junior year he was um was his senior year sorry he was amazing and uh and I learned how to play quarterback from him people don’t realize he’s as crazy as as he is and as people think he is as far as quarterbacking he is the most technically sound drop back throw the football read defenses like is anyone who I ever knew and so I learned I learned how to play quarterback from him I’m really grateful to Brown marus Jerome Bettis oh my gosh listen to that group Tim Brown Marcus Allen Jerome Bettis what a group bro up Steve one year I did it one year uh I was paired with Derek Brooks and Jason Taylor and the three of us we were we were so bad it looked like we were digging for gold and panning it that’s how bad it was that’s how many divots we left on that course and I think somebody was following is saying there’s no way these people are invited back that’s the way I felt bro when the lights go on when you’re not golf G’s not that great trust me it’s it’s not you know better oh I know better that’s true so so I let me dig in a little bit more to that Jim McMahon stuff that that that’s cool what what was he like as a senior in college what was he like man Jim was CRA look the craziest things I ever saw was Jim McMahon and proo Utah that’s the you know no matter where I travel throughout my life throughout the world the craziest stuff I ever saw was with with with Chim and Provo that’s just the truth and uh level Edwards I give him tremendous credit and in Jim for figuring out how to you know stay around and do well and you know he dominated look he had 73 NCA passing records when he left BYU 73 so uh we were we were we were on fire and did did he ever serve as um a sounding board when you were going through whatever you were going through in your early professional career Steve you know I I I did call him and uh and you know I I would tell you as a mentor he was a mentor in MO by how he modeled play like I watched him play and how he threw he taught me how to throw the football by by watching him was like Phil mikkelson and his dad I was Lefty he’s righty and while I was I when I got to BYU you know as a quarterback you’d think I’d know how to throw the football but I didn’t know how to throw it the way you really have to and uh so for for most of it he look if I called him and asked him questions Jim would be the first guy to tell you what what the story is but most of the time I was just watching him and then and then try to Steve Young here on the Rich Eisen show few minutes left with him before he goes out uh and and and shoot I guess what do you say high because it’s stable for like is that what you got to say you got to go shoot High plus you you want to be plus yes yes absolutely it’s so confusing uh so what what is your expectation level of Brock py this year Steve let’s go what do you have great player and that’s just a fact and it’s how he processes everybody now knows that he’s and he’s only gonna get better at processing he’s going to be able to you know get the ball out quickly he has to right he said to everyone I’m not as big I’m not as fast I’m not as strong I can’t just wait in the pocket and then sling it so he’s going to process and he’s going to get the ball out and and then people are going to start to see that and they’re going to start running where he’s looking because he knows he’s got to let it go and he’s gonna to fix this you know change his games as people change his game as people get more of a you know a bead on him as the but as far as you know playing quarterback in the NFL if you want to be good you gota be a great processor and the dude is a is Elite and that’s not going to change he’s going to be challenged and especially if he loses some Talent if Brandon doesn’t sign you know uh but they’ve got so many guys and that’s what you need in the NFLs You Know Rich you need a lot of help at quarterback when you get a lot of help you get good fast you know when when you use the elite word you know that’s when radar screens go up you know Radars go up you you you just use the elite word for for for Brock P Steve yes sir he is you he’s as good you know you know experience processing a lot of times is experien as well he’s not as experien as others but as far as the ability to you know take the ball and then process through find you know the truth in the play and get the ball out to it I mean it’s as good as it gets so I think that’s why he’s been able but there’s he doesn’t go from the last pick in the draft to being one of the better players without having something very special and the special part of him is this processing power that he has and uh have you seen Mahomes there yet Steve you running into him uh no I have not in fact it’s you K Mahomes no he’s not here I think Travis Kel’s carry the load for uh uh for the Chiefs okay so um three peat Steve Young what are your what’s your two cents on the possibility of a three repeat because that is the storyline going into the NFL we haven’t seen a possibility of it in almost 20 years what do you think I’ve said for years Rich that to be any good in the NFL you have to have one of these Elite quarterbacks that can uh you know again be great process those guys that can get the ball out who can run and throw it all over the field and they’re all in the AFC Josh Allen CJ stoud Lamar Jackson Joe burrow Justin Herbert Patrick Mahomes you really don’t have those guys in the NFC and so whoever to me the and the AFC guys are going to beat each other up now Patrick Mahomes beat those guys up in the last few years it’s gonna be Joe burrow it’s gonna be Josh Allen it’s gonna be that way in the AFC Championship so three pets are really about getting through those guys then getting the NFC and hoping that they can continue to to to beat it down because the NFC um they don’t have look at the 49ers when we play any of those guys we get beat Lamar Jackson came to town on Christmas day and just smoked us right Joe burrow came into town and smoked us Patrick speed us twice the AFC is where all happens right now we got to prove them we got to prove them wrong uh but the truth of the matter about the Chiefs repeating there’s only four teams in the N AFC they got worry about and then one or two teams the NFC so you have one in six chances to threee it’s pretty good so then I guess I should ask because I know he’s there have you seen Aaron Rogers you run into him Steve looking looking good and so if Aaron gets heal stays healthy and and can rip it then he is that guy so put him in the mix but again in the AFC so it just gets you know harder for those teams to get to the Super Bowl so what two cents would you have for him before I let you go Steve what two cents would you Rogers it doesn’t take any brain power to say stay healthy right like you have to stay uh you know game to game 16 18 17 games you got to stay healthy so okay number one so if he stays healthy then is around does he get the help that he needs right does he get protected are they going to protect him if he gets protected and he stays healthy dude has he learned in a much more rigorous time he is gonna take advantage of today’s game where you know the the rule changes and the and the pressure on defenses even this here where you can’t drag a guy down everything’s working against defenses for the last 10 years and he’s the guy that KN who grew up in a in a in a very sophisticated time where nobody was open so if he can gets protected he’s gonna kill it Steve I appreciate the time man uh go hit him straight say hi to Doug Peterson and Jim McMahon for me say hi to him for me who’s on your bag who’s on your bag do you bring a friend’s on your bag I got my li Rogers he’s been my buddy on the bag for a long time he’s a good dude a good coach and uh mo mo mostly it’s he’s he’s got a he’s got a portable couch he brings with him so that we get on a hole that’s going B pulls out the couch and I lay down like therapy what are you what are you talking about a portable couch couch you goofball I’m talking about you know like he’s he’s a h okay I got it all right Steve I thought you said couch calm yourself down thanks Steve have a good time time brother be well all righton SMI wants to say hi okay who there who’s that what’s up Harrison Smith how are you are you all right look at you dropping names and then dropping the finger right there on the goodbye button there’s Steve Young right there on the rich E and show he’s you got to use one that’s not covered with gauze Steve use the other finger it’ll be easier that’s the same with pting look at that this is bad news for your golf gam you can’t even I’ll I’ll left-handed there you go that’s oh now it’s a gloved hand we’re seeing bees that’s the other problem I play golf right-handed figure that one out what what are you serious yeah that’s my handicap I’ll see you buddy all right there you go Steve Young we’ll hang up for you hang up for him help me right here on the Rich Eisen show catch the Rich Eisen show every single day on the Roku Channel 12 to 3 Eastern for free

  1. And here they go again. Another former player saying how much tougher it was when they played. The players of today will be saying the same thing in 20 years.

  2. Near bottom of league in attempts. OPY in his backfield. Dude is mid and carried by a system and the roster around him.

  3. I loathed Young and became a Chiefs fan because of my man Montana was sent there (the best pocket passer ever and maybe worst famous sportscaster) … Yet, since retiring,… Young is a JOY!😊 I have never forgiven the 49ers for throwing away Joe. Only against other Cali teams do i cheer them on (Oakland Raiders; L.A. whatever).

  4. Sorry Rich, Jim was a regular looking guy with hair on side and wired sunglasses @ BYU. You’re thinking 3 years into his Bears tenure

  5. Steve young…saying all the right things of purdy as a former member QB , as everyone else in forcing a fantasy, that the 9rs can finally win that Super Bowl….well…here’s reality…in 2024…they will not make it in because in there division…the teams have gotten better and know exactly how to beat them aka 9rs. And that’s just in there division!!!
He has has 2 chances…2!!!…to win it…and twice!! Lost to the Chiefs!! Contracts now, players changes, with there team having to lose AGAIN??!!!…watching film after film in there beat down in trying to figure out a way!!… imagine the fingers pointing!!… WHO FAILED US!!!…offense or defense….they know…and we all know…it’s the Head Coach.

  6. He’s right that SF lost to the Mahomes and the Chiefs but they took them to OT in the SB. SF is absolutely capable of beating the Chiefs for a SB, they just haven’t gotten it done. Definitely possible though.
