so if you’re watching this video you’ve probably been in this exact position you’ve had a couple of good shots right by the edge of the green something very very straightforward you kind of think you know what you’re doing but then far too often there’s that fat one that maybe just gets on the edge of the green or maybe even more destructive it’s that thinny one that’s still accelerating when it goes past the hole and maybe you got the same shot back from the other side of the green so so what we’re going to talk about today is a really simple way of setting up and a simple understanding of how you’re going to play this technique and the beauty is you can use this with any club I’ve got a pitching wedge but you can play this from 69 all the way up to lob wedge just dependent on the kind of shot you’re looking to play so let’s talk about what we need to do in order to hit a good Chip Shot well the first thing we need to do is to be able to get that club to make contact with the ball and then the ground so we need to get the lowest point of the GOL swing ahead of the ball but we also need to keep the width of the Swing consistent and what I’ll generally see with a lot of golfers is for starters their low points behind the ball but also the width of the Swing changes which makes it almost impossible to hit consistent shots so like I said what we’re going to get you doing is setting up in a nice consistent way and then from there just able to to execute good strike land the ball hopefully where you want and get the ball to release down if not in the hole nice and close and have a little tapping so hopefully that shot I just played there looked incredibly simple so let’s talk about how we’re going to set up first of all so the first thing we’re going to do is the LIE of the club we don’t want the club sitting flat on the floor we’re going to get the handle a little bit higher so it’s going to feel a little bit more like a putting stroke so we’re going to get that toe down get you a little bit closer to the golf ball and we’re going to move the ball into the middle of the stance which in theory should make it a little easier to get that contact with the ball first and the little change we’re then going to make at a dress is you’re going to move your sternum just very slightly in front of the golf ball and then if you do that and make a normal swing you’ll see I start touching the ground a head of the golf ball so straight away that gives me half a chance to hit a good shot so before I get into the other little bits let’s try that first so for most golfers a little bit closer ball in the middle Stern them forward and then almost like a bit of a putting stroke and straight away there most golfers will feel a better contact but for many of you watching that won’t be the be all and end all of that but setting yourself in that position gives you the best opportunity to strike the ball well and therefore hit a good Chip Shot so once we’re set up we’re giving ourselves a chance but then during the swing it’s that case like I said of keeping the width of the Swing the same so at a rest we want to feel the arms just hang from the shoulders but instead of having elbows out like a lot of golfers do you want to feel that your elbows are in and almost that you get in the underside of your arm just against your body and then you can just turn your body to play the shot and a lot of golfers tend to get arms working away and we can see there the width is going to change and then they move their way around so we’re going to feel and there a couple ways you can feel it you can either pop your left hand on your right arm make a little swing or you can go the other way and feel that on there now for a lot of righty golfers you’ll just find it easy to have the club in the right hand to do that but it can really get a feel for the fact that you’ve got to turn your body probably a little more than you were doing so we’re gonna get arms into the side a little bit more in a bit closer stir them ahead and then just turn the body that was absolutely pure landed a little further up than I wanted hit the flag too worried about where those are finishing because if you can’t strike the ball well you basically got no chance of being a good chipper you might guess sometimes with a thin one or a fat one but we want you to get in there there again get those arms just touching the sides turn the body landed that a little closer that one down within a couple of inches and like I said the choice of Club really comes down to how far you want to land the golf pole but we’ve got to make sure that that motor for the chipping action is the body rotating not try to rock the shoulders or any funky moves or even try to use the risk too much on the shots minimal moving parts for this action makes it incredibly simple to get a good strike and then get better shots so again in a bit closer shaft a bit upright ball in the middle stir them ahead of the ball and keep it there so many golfers I see that have watched content who set up there and as they play the shot they go this way because they’re try to help the ball in the air if it’s going too low take more Loft but we get that there stir them ahead turn the body again struck that gray one didn’t roll out quite as well as the previous one but you can also see probably can’t see it too much here but there’s a little bit of interaction with the ground but there’s no big divots and definitely there’s no divots behind the golf board so I’m always making contact with the ground after I’ve hit the ball and it does feel good knowing that you’ve got a nice repeatable technique just’s chase that one a little bit more was probably wasn’t the best one but that’s gone 6 7 ft past which there are days historically where I might my good ones might be 67 ft past because I don’t hit my Landing point but as long as I’m giving myself a chance and getting the ball nearer to the hole you are going to get your scores down so from there St them forward turn the body that’s the one not gone in but again great strike and really really consistent technique now let’s say I’m pretty happy with both of those shots but let’s say I just wanted the ball to go a little higher and not run out quite as much I’ve just gone from a pitching wedge to my 60° beauty is the technique is exactly the same sternum forward and that one was able to pitch a little bit further up the green first bounce was a little left but again within kind of a foot or so of the hole nice and simple didn’t get close turn them forward that one there just dug in a little bit and that’s sometimes where it can be a little bit more difficult once you kind of added more Loft once just dug in a little bit One released when I’m taking less Loft and I know that the ball’s not going to have too much spin on it you can get get the ball rolling out and that’s definitely where if you’re near the edge and you haven’t got to go over anything playing it with a 6 an 7 an even 8 an can sometimes get away with not a great strike but when we’ve got more Loft in our hands we need to be bang on with what we’re doing but this technique is going to give you that you can set up let’s see if we can chip one into finish and decent strike and that one rolling out a couple of feet past but like I said the two key skills you need to be to do to be a good chipper is you need to control your low Point make sure it’s ahead of the golf ball but you also need to be a to control the width of the Swing if that’s changing it’s so difficult to get a good strike on it so we’re going to get the ball in the middle get the club a little bit more upright Stern them ahead of the golf ball and just feel that the underside of the arms are are resting against your body and from there you can turn the body back and through get the body control roll in be the engine for the swing and you might just start hitting some great chips and get that score down and Isn’t it nice for you putting stats if you can chip in from time to time

  1. Love the video. I like to use the same club no matter how far the chip may be, and just play it in different locations in stance. A little further back if I want more run out of forward if I want to fly further. How do you feel about that? I love my 54 for this

  2. Thanks for this video. It showed me something I had not tried before. I've been chipping with the wedges toe down in a putting motion but did not know about the slight weight shift / sternum lean toward the target. Will definitely take this out to the course next time!

  3. Great, useful instruction. The physicist in me begs leave to quibble, just a bit. 0:24 Once the ball leaves your club face, it's all finished accelerating, as the only forces acting on it (air resistance and rolling friction, once on the green) act to slow it down. That is, unless the green is significantly downhill in the neighborhood of the green, in which case that ball does accelerate, a little. I know from sad experience that the bladed chip appears to be accelerating like an F1 car after the lights go out, but that's just how it looks.
