QUICK SERVED: WIMBLEDON DAY 6 RECAP – IGA EXITS, SHELTON FIGHTS ON, and RADUCANU DROPS MIXED-DOUBLES

As we start to wrap up week one here at Wimbledon 2024, Iga Swiatek is defeated by Putinseva in the third round. Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton advance into the 4th round. Emma Raducanu pulls from her scheduled Mixed-Doubles matches with Andy Murray to preserve herself in hopes to continue her singles-run; this brought a polarizing response from fans and media.

[Music] hey everyone John worth I’m here it is today’s version of Quicks serve presented by Oslo sleep buds this is our daily monologue our daily podcast wrapping up action from Wimbledon 2024 uh John worin behind Court 14 here we check in Daily with quick hits highlighting the top moments story lines upsets factoids um and on the sixth day are you sitting down it rained a little bit which caused some chaos to the schedule uh we just it has been 6 days of rain here uh but the sun did come out and all in all this was an outstanding day of tennis a lot of fun a lot of surprising results a lot of late matches we’re still I’m recording this about 8:30 local and there is still tennis going on on most of the courts including the big ones which will probably go into the night uh the big story today the one that generated its own New York Times text alert eishan goes down in the third round to Julia Putin SAA uh we’ve talked before including on this podcast many times about how EA has not performed on grass uh nearly commensurate with her results on other surfaces clay in particular it is a bitty funny because she is a former Junior Champion here but it hasn’t happened for her at wimon and now another year of disappointment she goes down on the third round to Putin SAA I would say the result is a mild upset Putin SAA not much of a grass track record herself at least for this year uh but she’s a battler feisty player she can give top players difficulty beat Naomi Osaka here once I would say the real upset is the storyline and the score line egole won the first set 63 and then absolutely vanished she lost the first set the second set 61 a reverse bread stick of sorts um she left the court and that seemed to actually energize Putin SAA who later said she sort of got bored and she was asking about the rules she was clearly uh clearly annoyed by that and then she came out firing in the third set as well won five of the next six games ended up closing out the match 62 so I would say eish shonk losing middle Saturday at Wimbledon surprised but not Gob smacking the fact that she would lose the last two sets without apparent injury 6162 that ought to be concerting and it sort of reveals this uh Inconvenient Truth this is an absolutely dominant player she could retire tomorrow and and be a a legend a Hall of Famer and yet she has only won one of the last five majors and hasn’t been beyond the quarterfinals here at um this this Pinnacle event solving this grasscourt riddle will be one of the enduring story lines of the rest of her career can she or can she not do it um other results as we speak Novak jokovic seven time champ wearing a knee sleeve that looks like medieval armor uh lost the first set against Alexi paperin but has won the latter two we are working on the Assumption noac will pull through the seven time champ will stay alive if that changes we’ll have to get scolded or edit this but it looks like Novak we’ve seen this movie before Novak looks okay looks like he’ll get through other results Ben Shelton 21-year-old Floridian won his third straight five setter this was a player who was a few games from being eliminated in the first round which would have been a real disappointment he recovered won that match and now has won two more in uh in five sets today Lefty Lefty he beats Dennis shavala a semi-finalist here three years ago but someone whose game has fall off a bit and credit Shelton for just sort of taking the moment and meeting its gaze and he is now into the fourth round for the first time his reward for this feat he gets a step up in opposition now he plays top seed yanic siner uh which will be a big match on Monday but overall perhaps a winnable match uh Shelton still giving players fits with his power with his loose arm with his leftin with his unpredictability um Ben Shelton advances other results Selena s semi-finalist here last year beating last year’s finalist an jabur who looks like she could really use a break from tennis uh I was talking this Spina a few days ago when she was saying how childbirth really changed her not just terms of Personality not just in terms of Rhythm but it really had her reyn tennis and it changed her mentality the way she plays she’s gotten much more aggressive much more offensive her risk threshold has changed and this is a new player this is a player unrecognized iable from the player who was in the top five before giving birth um and she played her best today just a nice solid athletic offensive battle against jabur um served it out and now she advances other results uh Daniel Collins was losing 04 to the Brazilian be Hadad Maya then the Reigns came and Daniel Collins reeled off nine straight games uh that match is still ongoing but we will work on the Assumption Daniel Collins will uh be okay there denil meddev another quiet win this one over Jean lard stru uh sporting the peroxide hair as so many players are um other matches our man Giovani py pericard the 20-year-old 6 fo8 in Frenchman only hit 27 Aces only won 37 points at the net he Advanced beating the Finn Emil rusi uh this this Parry card is a great story of the tournament lucky loser lost in qualifying stuck around got in and now is in the fourth round plays Lorenzo Muti who just won about a minute ago right behind me a real shot for Perry card at the quarterfinals he’ll end this tournament inside the top 50 so his days of having to qualify and getting into as a lucky loser or behind him uh he himself admits he’s been a delight to talk to just sort of a fun kid as odd by this as anyone and sort of said look I’m very much still learning to play tennis he has a one-and backhand he serves in volleys he sort of has a body that could use them this is not necessarily A toned athlete um and he’s sort of as as bemused and unused as anyone he also noted he turns 21 on Monday and the best uh he he would like to reward himself with a brownie if he wins that fourth round match I would say he’s earned it um the big news off the court about a week ago Andy Murray uh asked emanu if she would play mixed doubles and she said at the end of my life I’m going to have that memory of playing at Wimbledon with Andy Murray on our home slam or not because today emarat kanu announced that she had had some wrist pain in the night and would not be playing mixed doubles with Andy Murray at wimon in his last slam um the upshot of this is that Andy Murray’s Wimbledon career is is effectively over uh this announcement did not go over so well in many quarters not least from Judy Murray who was who was clearly upset on social media she wrote that she was astonished by this announcement I talked to a number of former players and uh they essentially said it was disrespectful or that look she knew what she was getting when she what she was signing up for somebody made an excellent point that Andy Murray had no Ambitions of winning a mixed doubles title that this was just sort of a tribute this was one last match on the grass to savor this event as long as possible um he’s in no position to play because of his back so emarat kanu did not have to worry she was going to have to play day in day out Mixed Up doubles this was sort of a one-time Affair um emirat of course is still in the singles which is what impacted this decision In fairness there were other players who said look you do what you have to do this is mixed doubles why would you ever jeopardize your she could legitimately win this tournament the number one seed is out she’s playing great she beat a top 10 seed why would she in any way jeopardize her chances of winning a singles title over mixed doubl she needs to protect herself so this did seem to cleave the tennis public but uh overall it did not go over great um it did recall a little sidebar for story time it was 25 years ago that John mackenro thought he could win the mix title he asked Dey graph if to be his partner she said yes and then as she advanced in singles she would end up reaching the final that year as she Advanced she bailed on the partnership and and basically pulled out of the mix John mackenro was Furious as John mackenro contend to be uh he went into the locker room he was spouting profanities and invectives and the two people in locker room with him where were Andre agasse and Andre’s coach at the time Brad Gilbert uh mackenro did not realize at the time no one did in fact that Andre Agassi in fact was dating Stephie graph and this player that mackenro was disparaging would end up being uh Andre agy’s spouse um but uh the today’s moment uh recalled that and just as mackenro did not get to play doubles mix doubles with Stephie graph we will not have an Andy Murray em moratu partnership we said we do a factoid every day uh how about this one Emma Navaro plays Coco golf tomorrow much anticipated match we know a bit about Ben Navaro Emma’s father but did you know that Frank Navaro Emma’s grandfather was an esteemed college football coach head coach at uh Columbia and Princeton among other schools on a sad note uh we woke up to the news today that Vic saus um who was this Leading Light of American tennis and really had this this rich life of military man um he passed away at age 100 100 uh this is someone who he was he was a tennis pro he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the early 70s which means that uh he spent more than half his life as a Hall of Famer he won the Grand Slam and mixed doubles two singles major titles this was someone who at age 80 he was a club pro in the Bay Area and then uh his physically prevented from uh teaching tennis so he became a bartender at the club uh he passed away at the age of a 100 Frank sedgman 96 is now the uh the oldest living Tennis Hall of Famer um on a happier note uh the schedule just came out for tomorrow let’s take a look at the order of play shall we um we have a number of Sunday matches because of the holdovers Carlos alrez kicks off center court against Ugo Amar who just finished his match today over Brandon Nakashima emirat kanu is playing Lulu Sun second on on Center third this Navaro Coco go match a big match for both of them two Americans in the top 20 on court one Jasmine palini the French Open finalist plays Madison Keys yanic cner will play against Shelton and Gregor demitro will play meddev uh that will do it for us today again this is quicker presented by Oslo sleepbuds I’m John wor I’m behind CT 14 Andy will be joining us soon you will be happy to know uh but that will do it for today our first middle Sunday um this year only the third since middle Sunday became a thing two years in in 2022 um so we will have Sunday tennis here for only the third time we will be here to recap it all right have a good day everyone [Applause]

  1. Swiatek's forehand was a disaster, Putintseva didn't even play all that well, she just kept pushing to her forehand until Swiatek made a simple unforced error. Nadal won his first Wimbledon after his fourth RG title winning against a prime Federer, while Swiatek lost to a midget in the 3rd round.

  2. You have to give us better analysis than this, Jon. It is just pathetic to say only, "Well, it's just a mystery as to why she doesn't play better on grass." You were at the match: what happened? What did she do badly? What did Putintseva do well?

Otherwise, you're just reading us the scores, and we don't need you for that.

  3. Djokovic played well today. His knee performed well and he moved great, not excellent, but much better than the 2nd round. I'm quite happy for him but, as a Djokovic fan, I'm still worried about the second week. The glass is still half empty, not half full. I predicted Novak had a 20% chance of winning Wimbledon. I've got to live by that prediction. Did anyone hear the commentary about how, "Andy Roddick used to serve and volley without a good reason? He came to the net just because he could. I would like to hear Andy's thoughts. He's candid and tells the truth so it will be interesting to hear if what the commentator said was true or not. I don't think John McEnroe was the commentator who said this though. Please, anyone, feel free to chime in here.

  4. The women's draw, so far, is dull. What's with the blowout sets everywhere you turn? Where's the tight matches? In and out in an hour. Again, we need the best of 5 for women in majors.

  5. Love these quick updates! I wanna point out that all this hand wringing about whether Iga can assert her dominance on surfaces outside of clay seems very nit-picky and overstated. She won UO and the WTA tour finals, a bunch of 1000s – Doha, Beijing, Indian Wells on hard – for crying out loud. She's only 22. How long did it take Rafa to win his first non-clay slam title? I don't remember people fussing about whether Osaka can win a title outside of hard courts this much. It's as if people are just looking for a reason to nit pick. Plus, it makes sense for Iga to try harder for winning Olympic gold since it's at RG this year.

  6. Let's try to look at this match from a slightly different perspective. Iga played a very good first set. She had everything under control and made few unforced mistakes. For unknown reasons, Iga began to force the game in the 2nd and 3rd sets. It was not Putintseva who imposed a faster, aggressive style of play, it was Iga. Iga did it without any need. Now to the point. I am against the presence of an Iga psychologist at Iga matches. I am against the psychologist's advice regarding tennis. Iga is a mature woman who can handle herself on the courts. It's one thing to feel good on the grass (her psychologist's idea) and it's another thing to play on the grass, what the coach teaches.

It was not certainty or uncertainty on the grass that caused Iga's defeat today. In the first set, Iga played like she did on clay. She didn't have any problems with the grass. I don't know if you noticed Iga's gesture, as if she wanted to hit the ground with her rocket to release her frustration. There were so many suppressed emotions in Iga today. I am still against the presence of Iga, a psychologist, at matches. I am against the psychologist's advice regarding tennis. Off the court, by all means, if it helps Idze.

  7. Radacanu made the right decision. She needs to concentrate on singles.
My understanding is that playing the mixed would have her playing 3 x matches in 48 hours.
Why play an extra match and expend energy for no purpose not to mention the risk of injury.

  8. It’s always great when someone upsets a top top player in the moment it happens. I feel happy to see someone’s dreams come true but it usually seems to me that the upstart can’t sustain the momentum and it de-stabilizes the level of the matches to some degree from that point on—and the matches are not at all close or interesting to watch.

  9. I totally agree and understand Raducanu’s position in choosing to withdraw. That girl has gone through a terrible 3 years since winning her only title….a Grand slam at the USO. She was learning to play in the WTA tour, and had so many setbacks through injury, surgeries, and hate from everyone around her. She has finally won. Back to back matches since June. Reached a SF on grass, and has the chance to go deep at Wimbledon. Andy’s career is finished. In what world should this young woman be asked to risk possible injury, or fatigue when she is slated to be playing just over 12 hours from the last match on Saturday evening. Judy Murray is only concerned about her son. Not about Emma’s career. That’s why Emma has to do what’s best for her, under these circumstances. She may go out in her next match, but she will know she gave it her best shot. It seems that if the schedule had been different, she might not have made that decision.

  10. You did it again. You completely ignored the Zverev match. He played on center court against a hometown favorite in Norrie. Had a serving clinic going and played very well. He also got injured on the court today in a tough looking fall. You haven’t mentioned him at all and you delegitimize your tennis podcast by not mentioning all the top players

  11. Making a big deal about mixed doubles is hilarious. Making a big deal about an utterly meaningless mixed doubles match taking place just to indulge a crippled, retiring player is utterly hilarious. If Murry bailed on Emma to follow up unexpected success in the singles, no one would bat an eye.

  12. Hopping Andy is doing good nothing wrong or serious // good work and Podcast of the rest of the Served Team

  13. I am actually speechless about u not mentioning zverev again and again and again – shame on you John wertheim. I am honestly very sad but I won’t listing into this podcast again until Andy comes back !

  14. Thanks for the UPDATE John. It's not intended to be an in depth analysis of the day. Andy is on vacation with his family. That was established days ago. We miss him but he'll be back. Stop complaining guys, it's Wimbledon so relax an enjoy it ❤

  15. Maybe… if Zverev, who played on Centre court, with injury and such things, 9:0 sets and so on, French open finalist…joins the final…you will be able to talk about him for the first time in this podcast. Such a blame

  16. Can we please address Andy’s crappy predictions and how matchups don’t really matter as much as he makes it sound?
