Proper Alignment – Gravity Golf Instructor Danny Lee

This is a brief description of how alignment has to do with the balls relativity to your axis that you are turning around rather than just the direction your feet are pointing.

hi there my name is Daniel Lee I’m here at the beautiful Red Oak Driving Range in Holly New York the USGA certified teaching facility and I’m going to teach you a little bit about alignment today if you see somebody up there trying to line up their feet just with the direction that they’re trying to go there’s something missing from that equation what alignment has to do with is not necessarily the direction that your feet are pointing but the ball’s relativity to your axis I’m going to show you what I mean by this now if you start off and you’re trying to aim say for instance I’m going to aim right right over here you guys can’t see this at home but there’s a spot right out here I’m picking right in front of me all right so I take that position now if I was to move around like this a lot of people might say that my alignment has changed the truth is it hasn’t it hasn’t moved at all I could move all the way around to here if I wanted to and I’m still aimed in the same exact Direction now I’m going to take that same alignment here now watch my feet carefully I’m going to move my front foot backwards when you do this what’s actually happening is my alignment is now changing to the left whereas if I move my front foot forwards my alignment will change to the right it has to do with the ball’s relativity to your axis when you’re swinging around a circle around a fixed point that ball will just be caught on that rotational sling and spit off on a direction it’s like a geometric Compass if you think about it you have a fixed point and you’re working a circle around it now this is the tricky point about alignment cuz we all know that even though you may have the same alignment sometimes the ball goes in different directions so what can happen if you’re swinging we’re going to take the original alignment here if you come into the down swing and you pull with your upper body your weight will start moving backwards in your feet now the ball’s relativity to your axis is also the same as the ball’s relativity to your center of weight so if your weight is moving backwards in the swing your alignment is changing to the left now two things can happen here either you’re going to let it release and hit that hook or you’re going to come through and try and force it up towards the target leaving the blade open and hitting that fade too much of a fate to slice so if you want to be able to keep proper alignment you’re going to have about a 90° angle from your left front heel to the ball to your target if you stay relaxed and swing easy you’ll have no problem whatsoever and it’ll turn out looking just like this thank you

  1. I’ve never hit a shot that looked “just like this.” Thanks Daniel. You’re a good teacher and your dad was and would be very proud of you.
