Rory McIlroy is regarded as one of the world’s best drivers of the golf ball, and in this video I share his go to drill.
Rory can struggle with the club getting stuck from the inside in the downswing and this drill helps him keep his hands in front of his body in the downswing to help him swing straighter into the golf ball.

hi golfers Nick here from Golf Tech Singapore in today’s video we’re going to take a look at Rory Mao’s go-to drill with his driver I think this is a benefit to all your golfers out there whether you’re hitting drivers or irons first up we’re going to take a look at the drill itself uh we’re going to test it out later on the video we’re going to take a look at how you can also relate this to what you do with your irons as well so Rory probably the best driver of the golf ball in the world carrying the ball well over 300 yards swinging 120 mph plus now I’m not expecting in this drill to transer my game or your game exactly like that hopefully it does improve it so first up let’s talk about what Rory struggles with so in Rory swing he has a tendency to get that club trapped Too Much from the inside and that causes push shots uh thin shots sometimes overdraws so it can lead to inconsistent ball striking with his Zs but also difficult for him to kind of control the curve of the ball with the driver now ideally we want to swing the driver half into the ball pretty straight anything around zero is good even half a degree out to in half a degree into out now the preference would be maybe one degre into out if I could choose that just helps us get that tack angle slightly on the up can help us hit it a little bit further but also swinging half degree out to in is not a bad thing so we want that path to be pretty straight into the golf ball if we can get that path to come in straight just gives us that much more opportunity here to hit the golf ball straight now we’ve already swing he talks about his his right elbow as he swings he kind of gets it stuck in to his body here from behind him and gets that path dropping Too Much from the inside so for each drill what you’re going to do is just hold it left hand as normal but place your right hand just below the grip this is split hand grip so you can see when I start to swing like this what this is going to do it’s going to help me keep my right elbow out in front of my body so this is going to help me swing a lot straighter so this is a drill that you can practice anywhere don’t have to hit golf balls to do this you can just practice this at home or at the range just to give yourself a feel so Rory tends to do this a few times just keeping that elbow out in front of his chest just to get that feel of swinging straighter into the ball now doesn’t necessarily hit balls with this but what he does he uses it to give him a feel so let’s see if I can kind of generate that same feel in my swing so if I can get this path around zero that would be kind of the preference here for my swing okay not bad drive so PA there was 0.4 de from inside out that just give me a slight upper tack angle struck that pretty well 1 and 1/2 de closed pretty decent shot so for me that just gives me that feel keeping that elbow out in front of my body to swing that path straighter into the golf ball next up we’re going to test this throughout with the irons so again same kind of principle here we’re trying to get that path to come in on plane now the ball position is different you see I’ve got my grid line set up here when I hit a 79 here my path will be coming more from the inside cuz my ball position is more behind my left shoulder so naturally my path is going to come more inside and more down so even though for the driver there we’re trying to get that path around 0° maybe 1 degre into out with irons we’re probably going to be around 2 to 4° into out just based on the ball position so what we’re going to do we’re going to test this out with the irons now in Rory’s driver kind of drill he holds it on the shaft there which is a good way to give him the feel but he’s not actually hitting golf balls doing this what we’re going to do with the irons is we’re going to hold this kind of at the bottom of the grip so the hands are split here on the grip we’re going to try and get the same feel just going to try and brush the ground and for me just keeps that keep that elbow kind of tucked in on the back swing keep it in front of my chest and also this is going to help with the irons here is going to help you kind of control your right hand as you come through the ball I’m going to try and maintain the bend in my right hand this is really important when you look at the impact position of the best players in the world they have their handle in front and then they’ll probably get this like straight line condition just after they hit the golf ball so impact we should have a bit of Bend in this right hand so it’s going to help you kind of compress the golf ball to give you that kind of down attack angle if you swing on plane you’re going to get the inside out and you’re going to get the down so we’re going to test this out so I’m going to hold the left hand as normal the right hand at the bottom of the grip and I’m just going to try and keep that Hand That Elbow kind of in front of my chest all the way so I’m expecting this to come a little bit from the inside just based on this kind of ball position here let’s give it a go okay so yeah 4.8 de from inside out it’s quite hard at first to get the strike on it but just a few shots just to kind of get that feel it’s going to help me take my Loft off my attack angle was down four and a half degrees there as well let’s give that a go again so it just really gives me that sensation of keeping that swing on plane coming into the ball and in that low point in front of the ball and keeping this Bend in the right hand so you can see as I’m swinging through I’m just keeping that that bend in the right hand now I’m not hitting this very hard but what it does it just helps me get that kind of impact position there with a handle in front of the go ball so this is a great drill to kind of hit balls with the arm you could hit it with the driver but you with already using it as a feel which I think is really important when you’re working on your swing you’re trying to develop a feel through these drills to help you improve your gol swing thanks for watching golers hopefully this video gives you an idea and a feel to kind of work on this at home or on the Range if you enjoyed the video please give it a thumbs up if you don’t already please subscribe some other social media platforms and I’ll see you again next week for another video the most I fear I’m here and you’re not
