hi Philip Sparks from the easiest swing today I want to show you an exercise called the Harry Varden exercise it’s a historic exercise developed back at the beginning of the last century which is really going to help your game and that’s coming up right [Music] now so Harry Varden was the six-time open champion and one of the great tribert uh three great players from back at that time at the beginning of the 20th century and he developed this exercise which he said helped him with his rhythm with his balance and just getting the timing of his shots right and so he encouraged golfers to take about six shots before they played using this exercise so what is it well very simply it’s a different way to hold the golf club and instead of holding the golf club as you would normally hold it take all of the fingers off the golf club apart from your thumb and forefinger once you’ve got your thumb and forefinger on there you just swing the golf club and feel how you swing with ease and Rhythm and you get rid of all interference it will relax your wrists you don’t have any choice when you’re holding this than to just swing the golf club really easy you cannot interfere with the swinging of the golf club so it’s a great exercise to get you to get that feel and get your swing working in a nice relaxed balanced and easy way let’s take a look see what happens remember just in your normal kind of positions if you had your hands like this your right hand and left hand would be in their normal positions and then take your back swing it just takes a little bit to get it going but it will help you with your Rhythm if you practice it a few times Harry reckoned the best thing to do was to start your practice session with this and hit six shots to get your rhythm going and there I’ve got a better strike on the second one just cuz I’m a bit more used to what I’m going to have happening in my swing it’s a lovely exercise you’ll really enjoy it you’ll be amazed the first time I tried it I didn’t think I’d be able to hit the golf ball doing it but it is really surprising how if you do this and you practice a little bit it really helps you with your Rhythm and when you put your hands back on the golf club to hit for real it just feels so relaxed and easy because it takes all of the interference out of your swing so for those of you who have a swing caddy or a hole in one this is a really great exercise to do with one of these the feel and the Rhythm that you get from it is fantastic so if you do have one don’t set it to your normal setting wind it down about 15 miles an hour to a slower setting and then just do exactly the same thing thumb and for finger hold the device swing it and feel the rhythm and it’s something you can do that just at home don’t need to go to the golf course that will just remind you of this wonderful feel of releasing yourself from tension so even in the finish position you can see that I’m still just holding it with the thumb and for finger right to the very end of the Swing so that’s an extra little thing you can do with your hole-in one or your swing caddy so when you get a chance go out and practice that drill uh with your thumb and forefinger using the Varden exercise and just discover what happens you only need about six shots to do it but once you’ve discovered the feeling of Swinging with so much Freedom you’ll love it and you’ll be able to incorporate that into your game so I hope you’ve enjoyed this video and if you have please like And subscribe and o tell your friends about it and we look forward to seeing you in the next video thanks for watching
