do I have to like Bryon now because I kind of like him and and and I’m like okay but why why what has allowed for such transformative processes to take place for someone who like you said was arguably one of the least endeared by fans I think one he stopped being a [Music] dick what’s up everybody how you living no putts given Tony and Chris we back Tony or should I say Bryson paying homage to Bryson paying homage to Payne Stewart to the or Ben Hogan or a taxi driver I hadn’t bought give me some time I’ll change the story subscribe people make sure you hit the button subscribe do that stuff find us follow us all the requisite uh announcements and things again this episode brought to you by our friends over at lab golf not a lot of lab putter things to talk about this week in terms I have not played one other than the fact that Tony is still holding out allowing his putting to hold him back he has not made the transition cannot make to a lab putter but in due time people in due time speaking of due time I thought it was Rory’s time speaking of lab Putters well yeah we we we’ll get to that part in a minute but we got to start where it it should start which is the Bryson show u i mean where do we even start I’m I’m guessing people know he won I’m guessing people understand uh potentially some of the implications of this win which again we may discuss in a minute but let’s start with this has anybody done for their careers from a public perception a perspective that’s a lot of alliteration there then Bryson in the last call it 12 to 18 months it’s a reverse Hulk Hogan like you know what I’m getting at right like went from Hogan went from like this loved Heavyweight Championship heavyweight champion to a heel for a little bit right Bryson has gone the other way golf’s biggest heel to now it’s it’s arguably it’s most beloved figure certainly the most popular in the game right now uhhuh a Mongolian reversal as Callaway would have said back in the day so of sorts yeah so to answer your question in a single word no I I don’t I don’t think anybody has what are your thoughts as to why because I I have a couple two three things that I think and I know we talked about this before because I I’m sitting there asking myself this question like geez do I have to like Bryson now because I kind of like him and and and I’m like okay but why why what has allowed for such transformative processes to take place for someone who like you said was arguably one of the least endeared by fans certainly definitely by sponsors definitely by Brands by people within the industry just didn’t really enjoy working with him for a number of reasons why why the change what has created this I think think one he stopped being a dick at least that Sol a lot of problems world he was kind of a petulant dick for a while and and you know who knows why that was and I think looking at I think a lot of the popularity comes from the YouTube channel putting himself out there sort of kind of controlling his own narrative in the the sense of like hey this is who I am I’m just Bryson being Bryson whereas right certainly on on the PGA tour right it was just Bryson from one week to the next as solely in the context of the tournament and again sometimes with the the pet their content right you didn’t get your own content you couldn’t these type of things freeing him up and you know whether whether this is Bryson being Bryson or this is Bryson who has figured out what it takes to to be received in a positive manner and I don’t know right there are some contradictions there we joke about the hat and the tournament but he went from like you know years ago right that the Hat was was all about Hogan it was a tribute to Hogan well right he won the US Open and now he’s talking about how he wears the hat for Payne Stewart like right really well you didn’t used to and the whole thing with you know I don’t know if you caught it or not but but saying he went to SMU he didn’t even know P St went to and then previously having admitting that he hadn’t even known so like I don’t know what’s genuine I don’t know what is contrived what’s on the spot but whatever it is and you know maybe again it’s just a guy trying to find himself and say the right thing in the moment I don’t know I’m not going to fault him for it yeah um but yeah it’s it’s been crazy and and I think also it helps right you want to talk about what led to this well he hits the ball a mile he’s he’s entertaining so and it just seems like the fact that he is different contributes as well and we’ve talked about this being golf in general certainly the PGA tour right now as a as a sport as an organization wholly devoid of interesting characters without a doubt and and Bryson is that interesting character and so like what while we’ve seen the popularity grow if you you want to remember him as that heel yep he’s that guy you can either root for or root against and do it passionately as opposed to just be like H you know that’s cool Scotty she’s in the mix that’s awesome Roy’s in the mix cool I hope he wins it you know it’s it’s a different level for sure yeah and I can’t imagine what it’s like to go from again wherever you are and and again all the very few people right are superstars at age 14 and and then thrust into the public Spotlight and and adjust perfectly well and know exactly how to handle everything some handle it better than others clearly some shy away from parts of that because it’s probably pretty uncomfortable I think Bryson kind of became a superstar clearly without a lot of help in from the pr Arena and like coach like Hey how do you do these uh uh things and so he probably came off as contrived or forced or um bizarre in a lot of situations probably because he did not know what to do or how to act and was maybe getting even conflicting messages from people so I mean I think why now a little bit I think one he’s probably evolving and maturing as a person um you know I hate to think somebody would Judge Me based on the first half of my 20s and and into my late 20s I I would hope you know people would be yeah I would hope people would be okay with with people evolving in there but it it doesn’t mean that you you don’t have to then take everything he does or whatever as gospels oh my gosh is he the most entertaining player in the world right now yeah arguably so is he the best player in the world I mean we can debate that you know I I’m not going to say he is the best he was the best last week on on that particular course over a body of work is he in the top five in the world yeah I I would absolutely put him in the top five in the world but your your point about the pain is is perfect because if people don’t listen they say like that’s such a contradiction right and so it’s like he’s trying to do the right thing I think he’s trying to pay homage to people that went before him and and and explain some of these things but in doing so there’s an inity to it it’s you know so you don’t know kind of what’s real Bryson what what’s being contrived for the moment and so you know I I kind of hope that that YouTube Bryson is the real Bryson cuz that’s that’s the guy that that people seem to enjoy watching MH I also think I was going to say I also think that maybe Bryson is also the kind of guy that early in his career and now certainly into this part of his career maybe better off without the corporate responsibilities uh you know if you go through his bag now and and we’re going to talk about that because there are some things consumers can learn from his equipment and a lot again that are just so anomalous and oneoff type of uh you know piece of equipment that you you can’t take a whole L from it but think about what his obligations right now are to corporate entities none I think probably looking at it so he he does have a Titus deal so he is you know when we get those reports he is mentioned by name so they’re they’re clearly they’re paying for the uh the equivalent of of nil right name it it’s like ball shoe glove kind of deal right I think I don’t know if it’s shoe and glove I have no idea I know it’s I know I know he was wearing FootJoy uh shoes but I don’t know if that was part of the deal yeah so it’s it’s golf ball with them and then La golf right he’s he has a steak in La golf which also owns six so there’s your there’s your shafts and your your putter yep but you know Fairway Woods driver irons wedges like that’s you know he’s he’s flying solo on that doing what he wants to do without any entanglements so yeah going through let’s go through his bag and and and talk about that a little bit because I think like I said there’s some things as we look through his bag that I think are really interesting for consumers that there’s sometimes things you can take Bryson’s one of one he’s an outlier uh regardless and he’s almost kind of an outlier of outliers it’s arguably the the least translatable bag in all of golf for the average golfer but it doesn’t mean there have some interesting points yep yep yep no for sure so looking looking through his bag what are the couple things that you go you know what I don’t care who you are this doesn’t help you at at all uh I mean the single IR I see that one again I I really thought we we’d see another Tour player in single length by now mhm but I think we’ve talked about this for years I think if you have never played golf before if you’re just starting out MH single length makes so much sense to me you’re just removing a variable decreasing the complexity so you know the fact that he hasn’t wavered yep you know that tells us something I I I wouldn’t recommend a six degree driver for anyone crank or other wise um right but again it’s a function of you know launch being a a product of speed and Loft a no small extent and so when you swing as as fast as Bryson does if you’re out there with a a more conventional 9 degree driver it’s it’s just not going to work it’s not going to be yeah I mean he’s he’s upper 120s I think he was like 128 or something this most of this week um when you’re talking that type of swing speed that’s especially I mean that puts you in the top yeah that puts you in the top one two or three on any tour in the world I mean that’s effectively right we saw Bryson try the long drive stuff and do and and and again to his credit putting himself out there trying something different he didn’t embarrass himself in fact he did pretty good so I think take the reverse right let’s say you took a long drive guy and they wanted to try to play on tour and we’ve seen some of this uh stuff may you know Jamie said lowski or some of these but even Kyle has made a run right he’s Kyle B yeah that’s fair but this is kind of where we’d see them probably in that 130 range and so and I want to say I can’t remember if it was Tony feno or somebody else basically kind of said hey for the courses we play 185 is ball speed is kind of the fastest playable ball speed we kind of need out there so anything beyond that is maybe a little bit Overkill but again cruising in the low 190s and and faster when he wants it faster when he wants it unless you have a ball speed in the 190s which nobody listening to this does probably probably in general his bag setup nothing you can take from it but the the the thing that blows my mind is that 10 degree I guess it’s a three-wood or is you know Bryson’s a clel of a three-wood that’s like a right I mean it’s a driver kind of it’s a it’s a mini driver even though it’s you know listed as a fairway like just most of us have no business with a 10 degree Fairway Wood no no I mean he’s getting you know whatever 175 180 ball speed out of his like I said I think what was that 16 turn it was a 316 yard uh the par for he ended up making Birdie on it but it basically pitched kind of right on the front edge of the green I mean it was a 300 yard carry he carried hit that particular Club 300 yards so yeah for every other person even on tour a 300 yard carry with your driver is fast very fast and that’s Bryson’s through so what are a couple things though when you look in his bag that are translatable or are relatable to the average golfer what can anybody can somebody actually take from that it’s like arml which maybe helps some people probably doesn’t help others left Dash maybe if only because it it it kind of illustrates that ball fitting is not as simple as just a speed equation so you think oh yeah like it makes sense for me that that Bryson would play a lower spinning Tor ball likely the lowest spinning Tor ball on the market MH um so that makes sense because again with with speed you also tend to get spin but so you think oh left Dash is just for fast guys and I say well you know before the new version of the prov1 a where where Titus cut Spin and made it a little more left dashy Lydia Co was also playing a left Dash and so it kind of shows you like you know you can I would guess she’s probably what low to mid90s with a driver I’m I’m not positive but certainly not over 100 certainly not Bryson speed and that tells you right the the the breath of balls uh ball fitting extends well beyond just all right well how fast do you you swing the club how fast yeah their driver swing speeds are over 30 m hour apart yeah and they fit into the same ball so you can’t just go hey fast player low spin and that makes sense I think the other thing you know when I look through there I do think two things one he plays a full set ping wedges um you know no doubt he’s tried could find again balce Loft grind things that work in our test and also somebody to build them for right cuz that’s that’s the other piece of it these are these are not again super upright yeah I you know that that’s there I you know I see that again ping probably doesn’t get as much credit in you know in the wedge space as it deserves um I like that and then you know he is a composite shaft guy throughout the bag and I do think again that’s where he’s ahead I think that’s where the industry is going how many years we’ve been banging our head into this particular wall like I know it’s one of those things I think the benefit is there but by and large for for shafts that are built to the same spec as what a lot of us play you know that 115 120 weight you’re $100 per shaft yeah yeah one 100 plus in many cases certainly even on the the lower end these days as prices have come down 60 70 plus like it’s yeah it’s still C avive it’s it’s all of those things but you know Bryson and that’s a hard part because there’s so much going on with Bryson so much I mean if he were you know a quote unquote stock PJ Tour player through the bag and the only thing that was different or remarkable that stood out was that he played composite shafts that might be a little bit more noticeable but but there are 58 things about Bryson that are you know deviations from the norm that stick out of which playing composite shafts you know throughout the bag is one yeah I looking I brought out the LA golf site Bryson series iron shaft 149 each so yeah I mean that’s you know a series L Series 115 125 uh you know yeah I mean so again cost versus Siri found something for some reason two yeah I mean paage page spe X Series iron shafts 200 each I mean what is going on so yeah composite isn’t cheap that’s that’s the point yeah so but interesting none nonetheless do you have to like Bryson I think you should right I think I think if you are open to people evolving as humans and learning and growing you have to give Bryson credit for all of this that does not mean you can’t still be critical or perhaps point out places where he’s going to stub his toe and you know maybe do some things that don’t make sense um that’s totally fine but you can also acknowledge the progress right both things can be true uh at one time speaking of which multiple things being true at one uh at one time Rory is an infinitely popular player but did he permanently damage his reputation with fans based on how things finished on Sunday Tony I don’t I don’t know about permanently but I think I think he’s going to take a little bit of a hit in that department and we’ll see but yeah I mean to to be clear what we’re talking about right Rory missed a couple of makeable putts late hanging out in the Scott Norwood missed a couple of makeable field goals like Bill Buckner missed a very uh routin those typ of things yes so you know waiting in the scores tent for it to shake out and as soon as Bryson’s final putt drop Rory heads to the parking lot wheels up out the door see you no interviews no congratulations for Bry and none of that so you know yeah and again if there was something that happened off camera that nobody saw okay that’s fine I don’t think that’s what transpired but by all accounts you know and and and here’s my take on this with with Rory is as a human I get it I understand what happens when you get really frustrated uh I mean the devastation that he must have been feeling at that time must have been a remarkable amount certainly unanticipated I mean he you know on the back nine had a two-stroke lead and looked like they’re going in opposite directions Bryson was wildly inaccurate off the te compared to the first three days Rory was playing well Hing Long putts let alone other putts he looked in control it looked like that was you know what was going to happen and then if not for two Miss short putts again and people have pointed this out the first of which was uh at a distance that he’ made the previous 496 attempts so he was D realistically bad timing bad timing pressure say what accounts for timing like that and then you know maybe a poor Club choice on the par three put himself in a bad spot made uh bogey there I think it was a more of a shot selection than a club choice but whatever and then on the 18th hole again that’s not a putt I would wish on my worst enemy a downhill slider 4 feet left to right that puts unnerving to the best players in the world should he have made it he’ probably say yes of course all those things anyway just a terrible terrible way to ultimately lose a tournament after it’s been what 11 years in between Majors 10 10 10 years so he had a chance to you know break Bas I mean I’m sure in his head going decade it’s been a decade I can wipe some point right we we have that best player without a major conversation it’s it’s at the point where like okay yeah technically he’s he’s one a few but but maybe we need to slide Rory back into that conversation I mean yeah and so it finishes the way it finishes Bryson gets up and down from a bunker 55 yards out and a ridicul ridiculous up down a historic up and down in terms of major championship clutch shots immediately into the top 10 sort of up and down yeah Lou Lou stagner posted the percentage on that but it was I I can’t remember if it was sub 2% or sub three% but somewhere in that range was you know what the what how many you know what you would expect given the timing again of that so I get Rory wanting to just say I’m out I get it from me human perspective because you you definitely is if you stick around right the the expectation is that you’re going to sit down and and answer questions and and talk about how it how it feels to miss those puts and and see Bryson win and like the answer is it [ __ ] sucks how do you think it feels like I I want to be here right now I kind of wish I had those two putts back what what do you think you didn’t need to answer do you really not know the answer to that question before it’s asked but here’s the thing it sucks but you show up you’re a professional you want to be the face of global golf or you are I mean you you are paid ridiculous sums of money fans pay ridiculous sums of money to see you and I’m not saying he needs to stay out there and sign every autograph and and do all of that stuff but golf theoretically from what I had always been told it’s it’s a gentleman’s game it’s a sport yeah it hurts like hell but you stick around and you congratulate the guy that beat you you do that I think you have to do that I think Rory is probably sitting there today saying I wish I had handled that differently particularly somebody again in in the position that he’s in in the spotlight that he’s in I think he should have done that I get it I understand it but there’s also parts of every job that suck and except mine I I can’t find any but it’s tough and and and and I get that but man what are you going to do like we expect that like I said they don’t they don’t interview the losing coach in the Super Bowl they they interview I mean sucks to maybe be that person who gets that job but you do it it’s part of the EXP expectation we weren’t going to get much out of Rory I don’t think he would have told us anything enlightening or whatever but you answer the question you answer the questions and then you go and nobody would have would have faulted you for that so I I don’t know it it it it doesn’t sit right with me I don’t like it at all um and I think he’ll probably I don’t know be interesting to see what he says this week if he if he acknowledges that at all there is a difference between expectation and obligation and my feeling on this right independent contractor how many times have we heard that phrase in in the last two or three years right yeah Rory is an independent contractor he comes and goes on his own terms he has no obligation to stick around there is no this is not the Stan Stanley Cup finals when it’s all over he doesn’t have to stand in line and do the handshake he is free to come and go as he pleases if he wants to duck interviews kep Castile or or beond that is congratulate the winner no there is an expectation that you will but there is no obligation and that’s you know I think of the law yeah right yeah I mean I think we’ve come to expect that that’s what professional golfers do um but to your point I think this is you understand because this this had to be particularly gutting oh again like this is not your average this is not even you know Dustin Johnson at Chambers Bay right this is this is beyond that that level of beyond that and so I get it I I do think again people are going to think a little bit differently about Rory um at least for a while but but I think you’re right I think in hindsight he he’s probably going to wish he handled it differently and you I I expect I could be wrong but I expect he’s going to have something to say if he hasn’t said it already by the time this publishes that yeah that he does regret that and congratulates Bryson and apologizes to the fans and all of that stuff which you know is probably entirely true about how he feels about the situation but again in that moment I I don’t know I I don’t know how you how you bring yourself to I can see you know sticking around to shake Bryson’s hand like that’s like yeah I feel like you should have done that yep but the next part of that like let’s stick around and and answer questions especially again to to Brooks kepa’s points about the unoriginality of media questions the five questions are going to ask you know yeah like how did that feel you know what what’s it like to be so close etc etc and like you don’t need that [ __ ] right now I just I need to get out of here so again obligation versus expectation um yeah I get it don’t love it yeah yeah so let us know what you think out there people should Rory have stuck around should he is he obligated is it an expectation is there a clear line between those two I don’t know let me know what you think 7 minutes on some equipment stuff Tony because again this is an equipment podcast to some degree but there’s uh all of this other stuff that that we had to talk about I want to talk about clubs we’re talking equipment DTC vers Dropship and and here’s what I mean by that CU I had a buddy that asked me the other day drop ship okay the question was hey I hear about these companies so I’m talking new level sub7 Vice Tacomo C Haywood STI yeah brands that you brands that were not brands preco in many cases not all Cas and brands that you’re not going to see brands on the main aisle at your big box stores generally that kind of stuff and their question was this are they any good and what they were asking subtext is what are the differences between those clubs those companies and your Titleist Callaway mauno Cobra tailor made Etc so let’s just discuss that for a little bit Tony let’s start with what are the differences like what and when I’m saying DTC versus Dropship what I mean is DTC direct to Consumer right we we we use that phrase all the time so I make something I sell it directly to Consumer I don’t go through a retail outlet so I don’t have to pay the retailer 30% or whatever to sell my clubs to a consumer I sell it directly to you and I can make them less expensive drop ship I don’t necessarily even make the clubs I kind of order them off a website open molds and then they ship right to the consumer I’m just more of a a conduit than I am an actual facilitator yeah there you go yeah you know I think I think the there probably isn’t a lot of difference if you’re you’re being honest about it right CU it it in in many cases you don’t have any R&D inside the company whose whose logo is is on the box or on the club or minimal R&D and so a lot of times uh the R&D is largely cosmetic right how do where do I put my logo what what can I add you know how can I bling this out add some flare whatever it happens to be to to make this design uniquely my own and sometimes it’s hey can you just tweak a Top Line radius or things like that um so in that respect I don’t think there’s a ton of difference and and when you get into what you consider or I would consider to be the high tech categories you don’t tend to see these products stand out it’s not for many golfers right because that’s that’s where your R&D is and and even if you’re going through a factory which is very often making clubs for the for the big Brands the the ability to shall we say finagle some of the Technologies in such a way that you’re not blatantly infringing on a patent takes a little time and so in those in those performance categories I think you’re going to there’s still a fair amount of lag and so yeah you’re you’re probably going to be better off with a Callaway driver than you are any DTC brand out there especially if you’re fitting is not part of the equation all like hey I’m going to I’m going to buy the lottery ticket right when you get into things like players irons even wedges that by and large low Tech categories where mhm you when we talk wedges for example it’s all grinds and and Center gravity placement and things that that aren’t necessarily obvious to the average golfer so they they may not even see a difference they may not even know what difference is to look for so in those categories very very little difference the tech categories more difference but ultimately when you’re you’re trying to make a a determination based on quality and I don’t have a good answer as to who does it well and who doesn’t but just like a golf ball I guarantee you it’s all going to be down to the factory that produces it and there will be invariably factories that do a much better job and again I’m I’m being brutally honest I don’t know which are which at this point in time but there will be factories that do significantly better job than others and my hunch is as we see in the golf ball category there probably is a component of that that is tied to price right if you’re going to if you are going to cuz Quality quality costs money it it costs money not only in in inspecting to make sure you keep the bad stuff out which is not the ideal way to do it anyway but it costs money in investing in tooling and processes and things like that to ensure that you don’t even make the bad ones to begin with and so yeah when you’re when you’re spending less when something costs less if one set of iron cost less than another you can bet it’s because less went into it on the other end yeah prec particularly when you’re in this part of the industry already where people kind of have the same big cost Advantage already being their DTC so like okay that’s a big cost Advantage now once you isolate for that cost advantages beyond that are going to come down to like you said things like materials quality control processes I think I think there’s a lot of parallels between what we’re seeing in this part of the golf industry now and what we saw on the golf ball industry like you mentioned maybe four five six years ago where it was like hey we figured out meaning you that that foremost in nasau were highquality third-party manufacturers so if it wasn’t title making their own golf balls Etc and you said hey I wanted to start a golf ball company you you wanted to start a golf ball company we would have gone to Nassau or foremost right to have them produce golf ball that would have been ABS foremost would have been the first call no foremost would have been the first choice right after those two called Titleist see if they’re interested in doing a side business but yeah I think I think it’s probably but like you said after those two there were tiers and not everybody went to foremost or nasau there were plenty of golf ball companies that went to I’m going to call them second third and even fourth tier manufacturers and we cut open those balls they look very very similar on the inside cuz they were different logos stamped on the outside and even those same balls were often sold at different price points even though they were fundamentally pretty much identically the same golf ball I think we’re seeing similar stuff in the club space it’s it’s logical because again as much as we talk about how or not us but some talk about how how equipment has gotten out of of control right it’s too good right it’s the golf ball as we’ve said has been locked that spec has been locked for decade decades right and there’s no there’s no wiggle room there’s no way to kind of work your way around ODS is 20 years old like hey we’re just going to hit it with a robot and if it goes too far end of story right there’s no well CT versus core and that stuff we talk about with the driver so so the ball has been essentially locked mhm which is why you’ve seen DTC companies with no no real R&D of their own or minimal R&D right guys that that know just enough to tell the factory what tweaks they want to existing products or in many cases some of these companies we know started by selling a ball that was already available with a with a different logo on it and then as that company got big enough negotiate an exclusive for a model that already existed right right so that’s right and that is all possible because apart from like you know pulling levers let’s move it up and down this year right we’re going to maybe we’re going to maybe flight it lower with more spin this year or do something a little bit differently but that that distance standard is locked in and so factories are able to produce balls that from a performance perspective not necessarily a quality perspective but from a performance perspective are very similar to what you’re getting at $50 $55 a dozen from the biggest brands M and the same thing is happening with the with the club club space as well where we’ve been locked in for a while yep right again finagling CT and core a little bit but there’s we all know there’s not a little bit of room right and you can again receive forgiveness being pushed more and more to the perimeter right but those same limitations have created opportunities for smaller Brands to to move closer to the big Brands because again they the technology is largely stagnant because of USGA restrictions you can’t do any you can’t break through with something crazy longer than anything else right you’re going to get a little bit here or there and it and even that’s going to be golfer dependent right I might get more than I got last year with this new model you might lose two yards yeah yeah I think where where it comes down to some of the key differences and this is maybe a topic for a different day cuz I think we could go way deep into this is in those spaces so so take like players cavity backs or even muscle back places let’s call them lower Tech irons I think that’s where you can see these other companies compete exceptionally well because the designs haven’t changed in in large part for decades there’s fundament little tweaks but a lot of those are aesthetic tweaks that are fundamentally uh personalization I want a little thinner top line or a little thicker one or the amount of offset or whatever that’s those aren’t performance characteristics they’re more preference characteristics right so they can compete in that space and then like you said the open mold conversation meaning what are the Technologies basically that are out of patent if you will or non patentable or you know that was part of the ball stuff right when we saw these three-piece and four piece ball patents expire the DTC Brands because all this good technology even though was pretty old was available but you still had this rigid standard so that performance still really worked you’re going to see that in Club Space too because hollow body irons thin faces 10 years ago that was really really unique and groundbreaking now everybody in their mom has a thin face hollow body you know foam injected you saying my mom has a thin face what the hell I I did I just said that you know so everybody has that so where are the real advantages for the major oems high- Tech like you said The more techn te technologically advanced the design is big companies are going to have an advantage I think the other place they can have an advantage to the degree they choose to use it fitting in production tolerances when you go behind the scenes and you watch you know I’m just going to use Titus since you and I have seen this when you watch Titus put together a set of irons and how they do that that is an advantage that I’m sorry C or Haywood you don’t have you don’t have what Titleist has you don’t so that’s an advantage and the discret models right so you have 312 shafts that you can pick from some of these DTC companies don’t have the shaft library that the larger companies do so can you fit it better can you produce it better to tighter tolerances yeah probably bigger companies are going to be able to do that still better but but the game is changing right Conor Connor is working on a piece about this based on some observations he made you know I I don’t know if he’s like at a golf course or an indoor golf shop or or wherever you happened to be just kind of looking at the clientele and the reality is we we talk about this this boom of new golfers I’m going to tell you that well there are some that are hyperfocused Gearheads a lot of these guys don’t care they don’t performance is is secondary no judgment right they’re out there to have a good time they don’t care if it’s the absolute best they can get they don’t care if the tolerances on their DTC brands are right it’s versus Optimal Performance as we talk about in the launch monitor the personal launch monitor conversation is it accurate enough are these clubs good enough and for a lot of people yeah they’re they’re good enough I think they’re cool right it’s a cool logo I love this brand whatever it happens to be they perform well enough and I’m just out here having a good time with my buddies anyway so fundamentally I don’t give a [ __ ] if it could be better I’ll take 95% of the performance for 50% of the price and have a hell of a good time and that’s an attitude of a yeah like I said a lot of consumers so anyway tell us what questions you guys have about this should we dig deeper into the DTC stuff do you want to know where all these clubs are made who’s doing what that that could be an interesting buyer guide right charts graphs things all these companies oh boy sounds like a topic I think I just gave Tony a homework assignment anyway got enough find us follow us on the interwebs again subscribe if you have questions let us know post them below till next time we out

  1. Win with grace and lose with dignity. Rory should have put his big boy pants on and stayed to congratulate Bryson and answered a few questions. Keep it in perspective – you're not a bricklayer or a plumber, you play golf for a living.

  2. How many pros stuck around to congratulate Bryson after the US Open? Yes, there is an obligation to shake the winner’s hand if you are in his playing group (Bryson got dinged for this in his early years on tour). Sure friends stick around; guessing Rory not friends with LIV guys.

  3. Re DTC: I’ll wager most MGS readers would like a test of Distance, dispersion, peak height, spin of McGregor, Ram, Takoma, Caley, etc and OEM hollow body:thin face irons. Like Maxfli balls, there may be a surprise in the results

  4. Chris: The DTC v OEM issue you brought up is interesting. I’m guessing that many, many, of these DTC clubs are Chinese foundry blanks stamped differently and married to KBS shafts and Lamkin grips. There’s simply too much similarity with these hollow body irons like Takomo and Caley and Ram and Haywood, etc. And YES, I absolutely want to know where all of these DTC clubs come from.

  5. I’m sick of watching robots. I want to see the personalities and YouTube is a major reason why he’s very popular now. If these robots are smart and want to grow the game, they should be giving Bryson a call to go on his channel and show the fans a personality.

  6. Chris your on point with age view most men in there early 20’s self center especially when your a ten percenter in golf, life or whatever he is exactly what golf needs to bring youth back to watching golf the 60 and over crowd is strong but the middle is very soft and you know very well rock stars sell. It’s been the best stretch of golf in a while hopefully it will keep going great show! Thanks 🏌️

  7. I’ve been a Bryson fan since before he won his first major. Some of us never thought he was a “dick.” Imagine being bullied by Brooks, gallery members, and the media, and somehow you’re the dick. What an incredibly stupid statement.

  8. After 18 years off I returned to play again. 6 months in I bought Takomo 101T irons. They play as good as the Taylormade clubs which were copied. Issue is they use cheaper metals and over the years the grooves are flat. 18 months in ball spin is way, way down. Chinese metal in a Chinese iron making factory. Do you think Takomo has an R&D and quality control team? Heck no.

  9. Bry58n beating Rory in that fashion was karma for all the nonsense and trash Rory has said about LIV and it's players for 2 years straight. Rory then stomping off like a spoiled brat without congratulating Bry58n was right on brand for Rory and proves what a selfish, sore loser he is when he can't get his way. Great win for LIV golf.

  10. Rory doesn’t need to congratulate Bryson, and speak to media because of sponsors, being a pro, or money. It’s because you have good character, respect, and honor. Being humbled breeds better character , while revealing your current character. I hope Rory grows both as a player and more importantly as a person.

  11. These guys seem to look like the least transformative people, no need to like Bryson, feel free to stay exactly where you are! Rory is no Bryson DeChambeau, thank goodness!

  12. Bryson is doing more for golf than anyone else in golf. I personally dont tune in to a golf tournament to watch Xander or Scottie, but I will watch when Bryson is playing. I feel as long as he keeps tinkering and isn't bound to a brand, he will continue to grow in popularity. You can tell Bryson just loves to goof around, play golf, and have fun like the rest of us average guys out here that just love the game.

  13. Earlier this year i commented "who would want to play a round of golf with Bryson" after watching some of his videos.
Now i love his videos and would pay to play a round with him.
