[Music] Dustin Johnson is one of the greatest golfers of his generation one of the most dominant golfers in the world but he has faced personal and professional challenges that have led to him struggling in recent times even his winds were shrouded in controversy former world number one with two major championships under his felt Dustin Johnson is a household name in golf but how did the American Star go from a 6-month PGA Tour break to dominating the PGA tour for 3 years during 2015 to 2018 to now struggling to make the cut at Majors only 5 years later a 26-year-old Johnson was in pole position to win the 2010 US Open he shot a third round 66 to take a three-shot lead into the final round only two other players had gotten that lad during the week Phil mikkelson and Tiger Woods that is some company to be associated with this was Johnson’s first time leading such a big tournament sure he had won tournaments before but he hadn’t won a major yet and to add a little more pressure Tiger Woods was only five shots behind if anyone can pull out back-to-back rounds of 66 it is going to be Woods a good drive on the second hole should have settled things down but that’s not how this plays out 165 yds to the green and he cut it again into the right front grass a terrible lie with the ball buried he could only get it Forward four or 5 ft all was not lost Chip and Putt would mean only one dropped shot he finished the hole with a three over s losing his three- shot lead almost instantly onto the third hole which you would think couldn’t get any worse he pulled his Drive left very left over the 16th green left and lost after a frantic search we are off back to the te and with it our hopes of winning the 2010 US Open are fading fast two more dropped shots and the wheels completely come off he finishes with a final round 82 a round of 82 for a golfer that would be world number one within the next 10 years is pretty much Unthinkable that is what pressure can do to you two months later and rounds of 71 68 and 67 put him tied second at the 2010 PGA Championship with none other than Rory mroy maybe we should ask Rory how pressure feels overnight leader Nick Watney collapsed with a triple bogey on the seventh hole this was Johnson’s chance he was the one doing the chasing this time he birdied 16 and 17 to take a One-Shot lead into the final hole but Johnson bogied the final hole to apparently tie for the lead unfortunately for him after further review it was decided that he had grounded his Club in a bunker just off the edge of the 18th Fairway which was a contravention to the rules and he was given a two-stroke penalty placing him into a tie for fifth place Johnson readily admitted that he grounded his Club but he did not know that the Sandy patch beside the 18th Fairway from which he played his second shot was deemed to be a bunker a rookie error for such a professional to make on the bright side Johnson was only 26 he had another 15 years of Majors ahead of him and he was just getting started one year later the 2011 Open Championship saw Johnson fall short once again his enormous golf swing allows him to take on shots other golfers would not even dream of attempting Two Shots off the lead going to the power five 14th hole he needed to take a risk Johnson tried to reach the Green in two but pushed it right and out of bounds to end his chances of victory not as close as his PGA Championship final round but definitely on the right path 2012 2013 and 2014 Johnson didn’t get close to picking up his first major his best place finish was tied fourth at the US Open maybe he took his eye off the ball with off field distractions at an all-time high golf potentially wasn’t number one in his life any longer he still picked up a win each year on the PGA tour but he had so much more to give or did he on July 31st 2014 Johnson announced he was taking the rest of the season off to seek professional help for personal challenges it was reported by golf.com that Johnson was serving a six-month ban after testing positive for cocaine but when he returned he clarified the situation I did not have a problem he said when asked specifically about the drug I have issues but that’s not the issue whatever the issues he was going to do his best not to let it affect his Gulf at the 2015 US Open Johnson held a share of the lead heading into the final round he has taken a break sorted himself out mentally and now he is ready ready to put the pass behind him and clinch that first major faced with a 12-ft eagle putt to win the championship Johnson’s attempt rolled 3 ft past the hole surely not again yet as he stood over that fin putt you had the feeling everyone watching on TV had the feeling and most of all Dustin Johnson had the feeling the putt was never going in it had happened before after all this is the same Dustin Johnson who shot a final round 82 after holding a three- shot lead the same Dustin who grounded his Club in a bunker at the PGA Championship Johnson missed the putt like we all knew he would missed a three-foot putt and with it the chance at his first major championship serious questions were now going to be asked every time he got himself into this position Johnson built up the reputation of a final round Choke Artist throughout his first few seasons as a pro he was giving himself chances on major Sundays but each time failing to get over the line Johnson in majes was becoming like a James Bond villain he was dangerous but ultimately defeated on the 19th of June 2016 he would face all those demons once again at the6 16 US Open on the fifth green as Johnson prepared to address the ball his ball moved slightly Johnson stepped away claiming that he had not addressed the ball if he was to blame for his ball moving it was going to cost him a shot and potentially the chance of winning if you are getting a sense of deja vu then I don’t blame you after he spoke to an on-site rules official he was told to carry on with his shot and sank the putt Johnson played the next six holes one under par there would have been no thought of that putt from the fifth Green in his mind it was dealt with until on the 12th T an official informed him that he might be penalized a stroke but that no decision would be made until the round was complete he played the final six holes with that shadow lingering over him put yourself in that position you have six holes left to play but don’t actually know your score it makes it virtually impossible to play the situation and so Johnson had to just play his own game no not that one there was no going gung-ho no going conservative just playing Dustin Johnson Golf and this time Dustin Johnson golf was going to be enough to win he claimed his first major with a three- shot lead and showed that mentally he was ready for anything several top golfers criticized the tournament organizers for their decision Johnson showed great mental strength to keep it out of his mind and go on to win the tournament in the end it would have made no difference that there should never have been any doubt about the outcome from the fifth grade 2017 saw Johnson become the world number one golfer Johnson won four times on the PGA tour and was in the form of his life by winning the WGC Mexico Championship he became only the fifth golfer to win their first tournament after becoming world number one 2018 and 2019 saw Johnson pick up three top three finishes in the majors never really In Contention to win I am sure Johnson would have expected more he was playing the best golf of his career November 15th 2020 Johnson began the final round of the 2020 masters with a four-shot lead before making consecutive Bogies at the fourth and fifth holes to allow Cameron Smith to get within one shot Johnson had only made two Bogies in his previous three rounds so to pick up two so early on in the final round must have put some doubt in his mind about closing this out it certainly had everyone else thinking here we go again but this time he wasn’t going to choke he wasn’t going to let all those previous failures get the better of him all those wins on the PGA tour he knew now how to win he made par on the final three holes to set a new master scoring record breaking the old Mark of 18 under set by Tiger Woods in 1997 and Jordan spe in 2015 and as a result picked up his second major and the coveted green jacket and the man to put the green jacket on him none other than Tiger Woods could there be a more fitting Handover of the Green Jacket given his consistency in major championships this win should have kickstarted a potential Grand Slam but that is not how this story turns out January 2020 reports first surfaced about the potential for a rival Golf League that has been meeting with players and agents behind the scenes and touting an 18 event circuit with just 48 players 12 teams and guaranteed pay 2021 Liv golf is born and Johnson’s name is among those linked to leave the PGA and sign with Liv golf February 2022 Johnson was quoted as saying over the past several months there has been a great deal of speculation about an alternative tour much of which seems to have included me and my future in professional golf I feel it is now time to put such speculation to rest I am fully committed to the PGA Tour I’m grateful for the opportunity to play on the best tour in the world and for all it has provided me and my family 4 months later Johnson announced his acrimonious resignation from the PGA Tour signing a deal with Liv golf reported to be worth $125 million since the Liv golf rumors started Johnson has missed five out of 16 Cuts in major tournaments including missing the cut in the most recent Masters which is an achiev in itself given the smaller field size F he distracted again like in 2014 or maybe too busy weighing up the decision of whether to accept the huge live golf offer on the Netflix full swing show Johnson stated the decision to join live I mean it finally just came down to you know the offer that they made me for me it was playing less making more money pretty simple someone offers anyone a job doing the same thing they’re already doing but less time at the office and they’re going to pay them more pretty sure you’re going to take it and something’s wrong with you if you didn’t the problem with this is Johnson’s job is golf not to sit at a desk for 8 hours a day he has to be good at golf no not just good to be great and to be great at golf you have to play golf practice golf devote yourself to golf Johnson’s admission doesn’t sound like someone who is devoting himself self to golf speaking after a poor T10 at the 2023 Us open in La Johnson uttered I didn’t give it a full go maybe got a little lazy I don’t know what it was so I am going to grind a little harder to get it back to where it was when I was contending every week I think we could all take a guess at the reasons Johnson has gotten lazy reason number one two and most likely three is the bucket load of Cash alive GF has lined his pockets with Johnson pocketed 35 6 million in prize money over a span of just eight events this season for reference Johnson earned $75 million total in his 15 years on the PGA tour and he never cleared more than $9.5 million in a single season no matter who you are that’s a boatload of money and who could blame him for taking his foot off the gas you might have thought he was on a downward Trend already or is Liv golf to blame for Johnson becoming a non-factor in the majors since he joined maybe he is in a rough patch and we’ll find a spark that makes him grind a little harder having not yet reached 40 we surely can’t blame age for his poor form whatever the reason it’s the audience’s loss to see one of the greatest golfers of his generation be irrelevant when he turns up to the biggest tournaments of the year if money is all Johnson cares about at this point in his career he sure did make the right decision to join live golf [Music]
