Fade and Draw Your Golf Ball – By Danny Lee

Learn to Fade and Draw your ball with ease. It is not a complicated change between the two. If you are swinging rotationally the only change you have to make is ball position and allow enough room to work the ball.

hi there it’s Danny Lee I’m going to show you today I’m going to hit three draws for you your threee face I want you to notice the swing is not different at all all you’re doing is changing the ball position first shot I’m going to hit is a little fate now in order to move it left to right what I’m going to do is I’m going to aim left allowing enough room for the ball to move left to right and I’m going to move it a little bit back in my stance which means the club face is not going to completely have come to square yet so it’s going to be a little bit open that’s all the difference the ball moving different directions just has to do if the club face is coming in Square open or closed that has to do with where the ball is in your stance I’ll demonstrate a little fade ball will move left to right the draw is exactly the same swing you’re not changing anything you’re just going to put the ball a little bit farther forwards in your stance and aim to the right that a little drunk like that fade and then it drop again got to take that alignment to the left over there it’s important that when you’re swinging you’re not trying to swing towards your target line otherwise you will try and force that club face to stay open and when you start doing that it’s a compensation all kinds of things start changing alignment uh ball position weight the whole thing gets R it’s very important that you’re throwing wherever you’re set up the ball moving in a different direction is just because it’s an after effect of wherever the ball is relative to where your where your front axis is that you’re turning on nice W up with the draw and we’re going to aim a little bit to the right it’s always easier too when you first start off you give yourself plenty of room to Move It from right to left or left or right because if you if you get up there and let’s say you want to hit a draw and the ball is too far forwards in your stance for meaning that if you were to come through and release it it would go way left of where your intended target line is then your brain is going to force you to try and try and steer it straight and you’re not going to get that feeling that you want want to get of a total release so it’s very important that you give yourself enough room to move it and then kind of play with it in little increments so for instance you know I’ve got a line right here I’ll line up way way to the right first you know 20 30 40 yards at first to see how far forward I put the ball in my stance is going to affect how much it moves right way we’ll go way right allow for PL a room and then put a course in the St and it moves a drastic amount when you put it that far forward you stand but still I was able to release on it because I was aimed far enough to the right that my brain didn’t try and force me back to the Target right now a straight shot a straight shot is the hardest shot in golf to hit if you’re out there trying to hit a straight shot it means that every shot you hit unless it is dead perfect on the stick it is working away from your target meaning you’re probably going to end up with a lot worse bounces and your luck isn’t near as good so if you want to get you want to get those good kind of balances and you want to have a more consistent uh grouping around your target it’s always better to have the ball working towards the target meaning if you’re fading or drawing it in towards your target it’s going to be more likely to get a little bit closer so we’ll hit another cut shot here allow for plenty of room see what happens there it goes moves left to right there’s plenty of room in there all I’m doing is making a little throw around my feet I am not trying to throw it towards the target just moving around my feet and because where that ball is in relative to where my stance is the Club face is still a little bit open moves left to right hopefully you got a birdie F so one more one more sweet little draw here nice soft hands going turn right through it let it draw right in there however whatever it wants to do it’s going to do it’s not because I’m forcing it I making the same move no matter what shot I’m hitting that’s a secret to H the fade and draw good luck

  1. In the basics the curve of the ball is determined by the amount of spin put on it by the attack path the club is coming in on. Shallow vs. Steep as well as how open or closed the blade is at impact. Now the other factor is how much force is moving behind the club which in all actualy is connected to the amount of "foot pounds" or active body mass at impact. Also known as smash factor. These are the effects. How it originates or is set into motion is a function of timing and feel from the player

  2. @trotgolfer63 I hear you trotgolfer63. He really doesnt seem to know what he is talking about. I am not sure if he thinks he left out the part with the wider outer arc swing as well as rotating the right wrist over the left to get the ball to draw. First time I have ever seen anyone say just move your ball position to feet and direction of feet to get your results. That doesnt make any sense.

  3. Danny knows what he's talking about in this video. If the swing remains the same, and the ball if further up in the stance slightly, the club face will be closed more relative to the swing path, imparting a right to left spin, whereas, placing it further back slightly, because the club face is moving from open to square to close, the face will be slightly open relative to the club path, imparting a left to right spin. This assumes that there is no manipulation of the arms except dead-fall.

  4. @cloranstreetkid – the direction in which the ball starts is determined by the path that the club is moving on – the spin imparted is determined by the relative position of the club-face RELATIVE to the swing / club path. If the club face is open relative to the club path, left-to-right spin is imparted causing a fade. If the club is closed relative to the club path, right-to-left spin is imparted, causing a draw. The severity partially determines the angular velocity of spin imparted.

  5. Being that the swing works on an arc the club is traveling in to out when the ball is back in the stance and out to in when the ball is forward in the stance. The clubface, if not manipulated, remains square to club path or open to target if ball is back and closed to target if ball is forward.

If done incorrectly this method will produce a straight push or straight pull. If done how I think you want it done it's still a push fade or pull draw..?

Most instructors will want the ball back with a bit of a shut clubface for a draw and the ball forward with a bit of an open face for a fade. This will help the golfer minimize manipulation.

Either way the ball flight laws are the same. As long as the club face and club path differ there will be side spin.
