well a lot has changed in the N9 years since Jordan speed last played here at the John Deere classic And yet when he returned here this week for the first time since 2015 he said he feels like he’s in a second home he said the support that he has seen here in Illinois has been second only to the support that he has seen back home in Texas be got his first career win on the PGA tour here at the John Deere classic back in 2013 added another victory in 2015 and as he’s made his way around for practice rounds here this week he said he noticed that it’s he’s hitting it quite a bit uh further around TPC Deer Run than he did when he was here n years ago he was just 21 when he won the last time he was here back in 2015 and now returns here as a father of Two and a meeting with the media earlier today reflected on how becoming a father has impacted his career I think um you know on one side it hasn’t uh it hasn’t changed my drive um I think it’s changed kind of what is my drive like what what do I like I’ve I I accomplished most of the actual written goals that I wrote down you know by the time I was 22 years old um that’s an unusual situation and it leaves you in kind of a spot like you know what now um and I think now getting perspective on what drives me and what do I really want to accomplish in the game um that’s changed uh uh and I think having kids and recognizing that like you know where golf was life I don’t think it’s necessarily a very healthy thing I’d like to I’d like to be a lot of other things and what I do is play golf versus it was all encompassing um and so that frees your mind up a little bit you know to not maybe take a little bit of pressure off on the bad weeks and but the drive to my drive is to be as close to where my ceiling’s at because it allows me to have the most fun I can have doing something that I love and um that’s the healthiest way I think to look at it and I although I played great golf I wasn’t in that mindset back in the day and had I been you know um the bad days would have been even better um and so it’s uh it’s it’s tough because I’m not you know there’s certain places of my game when I’m at my ceiling they’ve they’ve measured you know the worst worst I’ve ever been at one category would be 20th in driving and I’ve been in the top three in every other category at my best and so it’s a very high bar um and so you’re not always going to live at that but um I I the drive to be as close to or at my ceiling in every level is um just as high with or without kids it’s just finding the right balance um to be able to get enough work in to to keep inching that that way while living life on the side spe said that he originally planned to play this week at the John Deer classic and then skip next week’s event in Scotland and then head on to the Open Championship but instead he has added the Scottish open to his schedule so then when he heads to the Open Championship it will be his third consecutive start he said it’s fared well for him in the past in major championships now spe described his season so far at times as frustrating he said it’s been a real test of his patience but he said he’s willing to be patient when he’s confident in the things that he’s working in working on as he is now unlike in the past where sometimes he said he had no idea what he was doing Amy I noticed on uh one of the feeds here in the building that PGA Tour commissioner J Monahan was apparently doing an interview session looked like with the local media there doing a Q&A any news come out of that yeah Jane Monahan stopped by the media center met with the local media here briefly uh earlier this afternoon and I asked him if he could provide us uh with an update on the progress being made and the negotiations between the PGA Tour and the public investment fund since he addressed the topic at The Travelers Championship two weeks ago he said to me that he would just repeat the same answer that he gave at The Travelers Championship again saying that he would not negotiate in public and that talks remain Ono I also asked him if he could provide some insight some criteria into what he described as quote the right outcome with the piff which he described at The Travelers and he said to me he looks forward to the day when he can tell us what that is still no information all right Amy thanks very much back to spe now who won here in 2013 and 15 he’ll be in the morning groupings playing with Zack Johnson and JT Poston he’ll begin as John Deere classic at 8:29 a.m. eastern time and a quick look at speed’s season thus far he said it was frustrating three top 10 finishes but none since the Valero Texas open back in April miscuts at the players and the Masters finished well outside of contention at the PGA Championship in US Open hasn’t won since the 2022 RBC Heritage and it’s hard to believe but just two wins since his Open championship in 2017 well trip Eisenhower joins us now golf trip is an unpredictable game don’t need to tell you that but it’s tough to figure spe out he’s dealt with a wrist injury we know that so what’s your diagnosis here you followed him for uh I guess the first two rounds at Pinehurst what’ you see yeah I had him in uh round two and round number four actually um there watching him up close in our feature group coverage um you know it I think the rist is bothering him at times more than he’s willing to admit I did see him a couple of times he hit it in the native area and you were there Jimmy you you can see the high stuff around there and and you hit that and I saw him grab his wrist a couple of times I that’s the top of his wrist and it’s the left wrist that takes the brunt of a lot of force and Trauma when you’re in those kind of situations I think that that’s there but it doesn’t seem to be hindering him I mean it wasn’t like it that was it was only when he had those rare occasions where he was doing it he’s driving the golf ball better than I’ve ever seen him drive the golf ball he’s driving it better than when he was winning um almost everything he played in back in 2015 um he’s 16th and strokes gained off the tea which is one of the best he’s ever been off that but what I see Jimmy is a guy who he he looks like he’s uh playing a little too mechanically with his irons it doesn’t look like he’s trying he’s hitting a lot of freed up golf shots and I’ll give you an example like one time on the 16th hole there he drove it well left and he had an opening but he had to hit a big high cut and that was the freest swing I saw him make it was like sevy he got over there and saw a picture of a shot and he hit this beautiful high cut um and the ball unfortunately went over the Green in the back bunker he didn’t get the ball up and down but it was like I think I think if he could get back to that freedom of just seeing shots and hitting them I think he would be so much better because he is so creative and that’s why he’s so much fun to watch when he’s doing playing that time type of golf the other thing that I saw that was really um I saw this time and time again look his speed control with his putting which he was one of the best Putters ever from long distance because his speed control was so good it was erratic it was all over the place um and he left himself a number of difficult second putts and he three putted several times but then the other thing too is there times where he would hit a putt and he would he would barely miss it and he would stand back and just keep analyzing that Putt and just keep looking at it instead of accepting it and moving on I mean in this game of golf if you if you were frustrated over all the misses they’re going to pile up and you’ve got to be able to accept the bad and move on but they weren’t bad I mean it wasn’t like he was hitting bad putts it was just his speed I think his speed control is is really off so the times he hits it on the line he wants the speed’s not matching that and it’s barely missing I saw that a number of times I think if Jordan spe could just get back to saying I’m going to be creative and just have fun and just go play golf I’m driving the ball beautifully I’m going to just and maybe at home go play with three or four clubs and just go play golf and hit golf shots and then just have a fun a ball when you get on the greens because he is very very good you know at matching line and speed when he’s at his best but right now those aren’t Jing so again I I wouldn’t be surprised at a place like John Deere if he could get that kid back in him where he was when he won here for the first time and just have that smile on your face and enjoy everything and accept anything that happens and moveed on I think Jordan’s be is is not that far from playing some good golf but a lot of times he’s getting in his own way right now yeah his putting numbers are way down as well as his numbers on shots gained approach
